The company is building a Sino-US Cargill Biotech Industrial Park in partnership with the Jilin provincial government, where it also announced an investment of USD 112 million to expand its corn processing plant. The industrial park should be able to process 2 million mt of corn by 2020, will include several warehouses and house an R&amp;D and training centre for farmers. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/06b9f3ba-65dc-11e9-a79d-04f350474d62\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is hoping to use some of the USD 1.6 billion it saved when it closed several business units recently &#8211; such as its sugar desk &#8211; to buy Nigeria\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-04-23\/olam-offers-to-buy-nigeria-s-dangote-flour-amid-strategy-shift?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=bd&amp;cmpId=google\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dangote Flour Mills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for which it bid USD 360 million. If successful, the acquisition would double the group\u2019s capacity in Nigeria and allow it to capitalise on the fast-growing demand for wheat-based products. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/danone-bledina-bcorp\/danones-bledina-france-arm-wins-b-corp-certification-idUKP6N21T008\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s baby food company, Bledina France, has been certified <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bcorporation.net\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B-Corp<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a certification awarded to profit-making companies that aim to have a positive social and environmental impact. Danone now has 10 B-Corp companies representing 20% of its global sales. The CEO said the goal was for the whole group &#8211; the first multinational company ever &#8211; to be B-Corp certified. In North America, Danone launched its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agdaily.com\/news\/danone-grant-sustainable-food\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Planet One Health Initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which will give out grants to create community-based projects working on designing sustainable food systems.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.waste360.com\/plastics\/unilever-ramps-plastics-recycling-strategy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unilever<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> North America has committed to making at least half of its plastic packaging from post-consumer recycled content and making all of its plastic reusable or recyclable by 2025. Similarly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/resource-recycling.com\/recycling\/2019\/04\/23\/nestle-waters-ceo-100-packaging-recovery-is-possible\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nestle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Waters North America is targeting to use 50% recycled plastic by 2025, up from 7% in 2017. The CEO said that there needed to be better systems to encourage collection, such as bottle deposits. Nevertheless, thanks to technology, he expects that achieving 100% packaging recovery is a feasible goal. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After reviewing Burger King\u2019s plant-based Whopper burger, an official from the Missouri Farm Bureau said that it was almost <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2019\/apr\/08\/burger-king-impossible-whopper-plant-based-review-meat-lobbyist\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impossible to tell the difference with real meat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He said, \u201cIf farmers and ranchers think we can mock and dismiss these products as a passing fad, we\u2019re kidding ourselves.\u201d Luckily for them, Missouri has already banned plant-based meat from being advertised as meat. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2019\/apr\/08\/when-a-veggie-burger-isnt-a-burger\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proposal in the EU<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could take things even further and only allow the use of terms such as \u2018sausage\u2019 or \u2018burger\u2019 for real meat on the basis that it would otherwise be misleading. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a US class action lawsuit, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-cattle-lawsuit\/lawsuit-says-tyson-cargill-jbs-conspired-to-suppress-beef-prices-paid-to-u-s-ranchers-idUSKCN1RZ2AO\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cattle ranchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are suing Tyson Foods, Cargill, JBS and National Beef Packing, accusing them of colluding in offering low prices for meat since 2015. The ranchers are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drovers.com\/article\/r-calf-sues-tyson-cargill-jbs-and-national\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hoping<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to stop these meat packaging companies, which represent some 80% of the US fed cattle market, from exerting control over independent cattle producers and driving them out of business. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several institutions, including the Rockefeller Foundation, have teamed up to create the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.feedstuffs.com\/news\/consortium-addresses-post-harvest-food-loss-waste\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consortium for Innovation in Post-Harvest Loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &amp; Food Waste Reduction. The aim will be for all stakeholders, from industries to NGOs and farmers, to work together on finding the best solution to reduce the estimated 1.3 billion mt of food lost every year. The director of the Rockefeller Foundation added that the consortium would work on encouraging plant-based diets as well as increasing yields, which should help reduce agriculture\u2019s carbon emissions. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, a recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/consumers-expect-to-keep-protein-on-their-shopping-lists-as-part-of-a-healthy-and-sustainable-diet-according-to-new-survey-300835665.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">global survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Cargill showed that over 60% of respondents plan to continue eating just as much animal protein &#8211; if not more &#8211; and 80% are looking into adding plant-based products too. What the survey showed, according to Cargill, is that consumers believe that animal protein can be part of a healthy and environmentally conscious diet. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, a professor from the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyuw.com\/science\/article_80c4c74a-64bd-11e9-b267-ffbc4974d36e.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> argued that it would be environmentally better to have a \u2018selectively pescatarian\u2019 diet rather than scrapping meat altogether. He explained that a lot of the plant-based alternatives need to be shipped over long distances and, such as in the case of soybean, have a heavy carbon footprint. He added that \u201cthe lowest impact thing you could do is step outside your door and shoot a deer, eating native animals is really low impact.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, in Australia, some 40 well-known <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2019\/apr\/18\/australias-top-restaurants-pledge-to-serve-only-sustainable-seafood\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chefs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have pledged to only use sustainable seafood as part of the Australian Marine Conservation Society\u2019s Good Fish project.
