The firm appointed a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/green-plains-appoints-patrich-simpkins-100000447.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new chief financial officer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as part of another restructure &#8211; the second in less than two years. The aim, the CEO said, is to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-05-08\/bunge-first-quarter-net-sales-miss-estimates\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">integrate regional operations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into a global model which will allow faster decision making. <\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-05-03\/louis-dreyfus-in-talks-to-sell-equity-stakes-to-key-partners\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Louis Dreyfus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is reportedly engaged in talks with investors interested in buying equity stakes. Sources say the potential investors might include China\u2019s COFCO or Japanese trading houses. This is part of an effort to move closer to the consumer and focus on emerging markets such as Asia. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-05-07\/china-is-said-to-plan-overhaul-of-state-agriculture-giants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COFCO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meanwhile, could see some transformations as China is working on a plan to reorganise state-owned commodity companies. Under the change, Sinograin assets could be transferred to COFCO &#8211; making it the biggest soy processor in the country.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still in China, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.feednavigator.com\/Article\/2019\/05\/07\/Cargill-expands-global-premix-footprint-with-new-China-facility\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cargill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> announced it was building a new premix plant in the Jiangxi Province, another in a series of investment in the country\u2019s feed industry. The plant will focus on young animal nutrition and antibiotic growth promoter-free solutions. This comes at a time when the country is struggling with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmprogress.com\/animal-health\/african-swine-fever-sends-shockwaves-through-global-food-chain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">African swine flu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. China\u2019s pig population should fall by some 134 million heads this year, almost 30% of the country\u2019s total population and more than the number of pigs in the US. ADM forecast that China will have to import a lot of meat to compensate, causing prices to surge in places like the US, Europe and Australia. An analyst at INTL FCStone argued this could also force China to make efforts to please the US and settle on a trade deal. <\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But so far it doesn\u2019t look like this is the case. The US has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-trade-china\/china-trade-team-still-preparing-to-go-for-talks-after-trump-cranks-up-pressure-idUSKCN1SC0MF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">threatened<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to impose new import tariffs on Chinese products by the end of the week after the latter went back on some of its earlier commitments. A source said the issue was that China now wanted to make the policy changes through administrative and regulatory actions instead of making legal changes. A policy expert <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asiatimes.com\/2019\/05\/article\/markets-tumble-after-trumps-tariffs-bombshell\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">argued<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this would weaken the deal and make it hard to implement. <\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-trade-china-agriculture\/us-wins-wto-ruling-against-china-grain-import-quotas-idUSKCN1RU1PM\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WTO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ruled in favour of the US last week on a 2016 case against China\u2019s tariff-rate quotas for corn, rice and wheat. China said it would look into the decision and aim to follow WTO rules but trade <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastasiaforum.org\/2019\/04\/29\/do-we-need-new-rules-for-china-at-the-wto\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analysts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are increasingly concerned about the WTO\u2019s ability to \u2018handle\u2019 China. Some are even suggesting the organisation should change their rules to deal better with the country and its state-owned enterprises. Brazil, meanwhile, is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/brazil-china-sugar\/update-1-brazil-expects-china-to-end-sugar-import-tariffs-official-idUSL1N22F1AG\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hopeful<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that China won\u2019t renew anti-dumping measures on sugar when they expire next year. <\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/business\/companies-markets\/olam-joint-venture-in-gabon-gets-sustainable-certification-for-oil-palm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s palm plantations in Gabon, which it manages in a joint venture with the government, has been certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). The tradehouse, which aims to certify all of its Gabon plantations by 2021, added that this was Africa\u2019s first certified oil palm plantation to be completely on grassland. In the EU, some environmentalists are worried that the Commission\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/palm-oil-ban#page-2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ban on palm oil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is likely to stall recent efforts to make the palm oil supply chain more sustainable. Producers, namely Malaysia and Indonesia, will likely look for new buyers in homes such as China and India where there is less concern about sustainability. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The European Commission, meanwhile, is implementing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.world-grain.com\/articles\/12022-european-commission-implements-new-food-waste-policy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common food waste measurement methodology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so that each member state can accurately assess the amount of food that is being wasted every year. In turn, each country will be able to use this information to achieve the EU\u2019s Circular Economy Action Plan to halve per capita food waste by 2030. <\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/apr\/24\/farmers-save-earths-soil-conservation-agriculture\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> warned in a new report that, on top of threatening the existence of some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/energy-environment\/442303-1-million-species-face-extinction-soil-could-be-a-solution\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 million species<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the poor state of our soil could mean that within 60 years most land will be too barren to grow enough crops to feed the world. Some suggest that creating carbon farming tax credits would be a good way to encourage farmers to switch to methods which regenerates the soil\u2019s nutrients. However, some of these methods, such as \u2018no tillage\u2019 and using \u2018cover crops\u2019, are already spreading as farmers say they lower machine and labour costs and use fewer chemicals. The bonus is that the restored soil can, in turn, absorb significant quantities of greenhouse gas. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatesnotes.com\/Energy\/We-should-discuss-soil-as-much-as-coal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bill Gates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meanwhile, is working on a type of crop that could store more carbon.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vegan meat company <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-05-02\/beyond-meat-makes-history-with-biggest-ipo-pop-since-08-crisis?utm_source=New+Food+Economy+Subscribers&amp;utm_campaign=59e555fb72-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_05_02_07_30&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_75a28a0eaf-59e555fb72-511595977\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond Meat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was valued USD 3.8 billion on the first day of its IPO last week &#8211; making it the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/beyond-meat-shares-soar-anew-to-bring-post-ipo-gains-to-240-2019-05-07\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highest US listing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since the financial crisis.
