This is in response to the new US tariffs due to come into force in September. Goldman Sachs said the latest escalation made a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/08\/06\/trade-war-goldman-sachs-does-not-expect-us-china-deal-before-2020-election.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trade resolution unlikely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before the US elections in 2020. The bank had earlier assumed that resolving the trade deal would be in the President\u2019s interest ahead of the elections.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will make things harder for US farmers and ranchers who were already <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fb.org\/newsroom\/china-trade-standstill-more-bad-news-for-farmers\/?utm_source=Social&amp;utm_medium=Twitter&amp;utm_campaign=AFBF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">struggling to survive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, the President hinted that the government <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-06\/trump-hints-at-more-trade-aid-as-farmers-complain-of-body-blow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could offer more aid to farmers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on top of the USD 28 billion already pledged. The comment contradicted an earlier message by the USDA which warned farmers that no further aid was planned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bad weather and delayed planting is also making the situation difficult for US livestock producers who are looking to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-livestock-diets\/u-s-cows-and-pigs-gorge-on-bakery-rolls-pet-food-as-corn-prices-surge-idUSKCN1US23Z\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alternative feeds amid surging corn prices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as the country is expected to harvest its smallest corn crop in four years. Alternatives feeds include wheat, outdated pet food, leftover bakery products and imported South American grain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brazil\u2019 agricultural sector is one of the winners in the trade war. China\u2019s Cofco noted that tax and pensions reforms enacted by the new Brazilian government will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agriculture.com\/markets\/newswire\/update-2-cofco-plans-to-boost-brazil-ops-sees-improving-business-outlook\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">encourage investments <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the country by providing more predictability and stability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, efforts by the Brazilian government to attract investors has led to a significant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/jul\/25\/amazonian-rainforest-near-unrecoverable-tipping-point\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase in the deforestation rate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to official data from the National Institute for Space Research. The deforestation rate now risks falling back to the levels seen in the early 2000s, which could impact the sustainability pledges made by large companies. Mondelez, for one, is using satellite data provided by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pro.globalforestwatch.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global Forest Watch Pro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, nicknamed the \u201cGoogle Maps of forests\u201d, to monitor its suppliers in Brazil.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The worsening environmental performance of Brazil\u2019s farm sector could potentially threaten its ability to trade and jeopardise the new free trade agreement with the EU. The Brazilian agriculture minister argued that the country was able to maintain its high standards despite the accelerated pace of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-brazil-farming\/brazils-faster-agrochemical-approvals-not-harming-environment-minister-idUSKCN1UV1IK\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approval for agrochemicals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The country needs to \u201cwin the communication war\u201d, she added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another trade agreement at risk is the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) which is being challenged by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/africa-trade-nigeria\/on-cusp-of-pan-african-trade-deal-giant-nigeria-clings-to-protection-idUSL8N24W7AS\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nigeria\u2019s protectionist stance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So far, all African countries but one &#8211; Eritrea &#8211; signed on. Also in Nigeria, Dangote Flour Mill (DFM) announced that it had received a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/business\/business-news\/345306-olam-offers-n120-billion-to-buy-dangote-flour-mill.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">final bid from Olam <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wishing to take over the firm for NGN 120 billion (USD 331 million). Now a global commodity group, Olam started in Nigeria as a cashew nut exporter 30 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few weeks after launching a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodbev.com\/news\/nestle-creates-new-chocolate-without-adding-refined-sugar\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new chocolate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made entirely from the coca fruit, Nestle announced a new range of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodingredientsfirst.com\/news\/embracing-coffee-trends-nestl%E9-launches-first-ever-plant-based-soluble-coffee-mixes.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nescafe Gold which is entirely plant-based<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Three new latte products will be launched: almond, oat and coconut coffees. Similarly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agweb.com\/article\/marfrig-joins-adm-produce-fake-meat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marfrig Global Foods and ADM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will collaborate to offer a plant-based burger in Brazil later this year. JBS SA also announced a plan to sell a plant-based meat patty, called Seara.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the aquafeed sector, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/cargills-sustainable-plant-based-alternative-to-omega-3-fish-oil-approved-for-us-cultivation-300898064.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USDA has approved Cargill\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> plant-based fish oil alternative for US cultivation. Using canola oilseed, Cargill is able to provide a source of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, required in aquafeed, without putting pressure on wild fish stocks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UN\u2019s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is due to release a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/srccl\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new report this week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> analysing the relationship between land use and climate change.
