Norway&#8217;s Mowi, the largest salmon producer in the world, said it would <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-brazil-environment-mowi\/fish-farmer-mowi-could-halt-brazil-soy-imports-over-amazon-fires-idUSKCN1VI2HT\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">source soy outside of Brazil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> unless the government addressed the fires, and the biggest meatpacker in the world, JBS, said it was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-brazil-meat-jbs\/brazils-jbs-says-it-uses-satellites-to-monitor-cattle-suppliers-idUSKCN1VI21C\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">closely monitoring its suppliers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the area using satellites. Although it admitted that monitoring indirect suppliers was challenging. Many other Brazilian agribusinesses, including from the paper and pulp sectors, argued that the President\u2019s environmental stance has been \u2018disastrous\u2019 in terms of what was being communicated to the outside world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In contrast, the sugar union, UNICA, said the current government <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/revistagloborural.globo.com\/Noticias\/Agricultura\/Cana\/noticia\/2019\/08\/unica-defende-posicionamento-do-governo-em-relacao-amazonia.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could not be blamed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the fires, adding that the environment minister was committed to protecting the forest. The CEO of Summit Agricultural Group, which owns a corn ethanol plant in Brazil\u2019s Mato Grosso, argued that the media was not covering the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegazette.com\/subject\/news\/government\/iowa-ethanol-brazil-amazon-rainforest-fires-summit-ag-group-bruce-rastetter-20190827\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brazilian President\u2019s response fairly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and that sending in the army had been the right thing to do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The US President is also potentially facing a growing backlash from farmers for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-biofuels-trump\/trump-intervention-triggered-epas-surprise-biofuel-waiver-decision-sources-idUSKCN1V610F\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">undermining the ethanol standard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a key political topic in Iowa where it involves at least 40,000 jobs. Most Democratic Presidential candidates for 2020 have come out in strong support of the ethanol industry, but environmental activists note that their stances often <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/email.robly.com\/wf\/click?upn=CBnBfjWvi7UqyA9NMlaPzJypuOJ33DJCsrI6afKdprGo8qAZ6v5Bl9xYBHuXQ3m2wUH58gJ-2BQZK3k8dQHg6TP8Jmktrg79ACAeyD-2BzK4HExpB3UdizErJThr-2BSz0DAfptsC6EAlZZc3LTPd1KqIY6NBD6-2FrOm2YfGb8MLdhuuTVYpi8meEWvUG99uvlcEdBh_h6TCXGEWuf7VA97FHsuU-2FUB7BpbNf-2BEyM4GjvVOjc8J2gEm-2F8UM6plNP3jaFTHtGgXkdFE3ATdf2ph-2FHmV6bYl2Ke5UcCRPDE-2BK41U8QZYqzH-2FbRKynzGNqXVUhgpbVPit6dZDE-2FUXQfWBLGxoBoMLyRjUsnBmAy-2Fpk1i4oNuXskTd8dAeTkvrGSm4RiuaMkSBNUaXBng18rSPo-2FeeEcwuS73mBuB9g5DP2AcJOtIoofqu3boXPx2i25bnuPsNvMqhXNlSgJMVqrf0T04xv64MwYoSlBotX1tK7P9A2va2wMfDOC2bWrWDm25ng0UQCKyi6jfI-2Ff6-2FpVp4rvI0HSPW0yGUuqGtxGWGa27-2F5D0bQvY9GibN6NsIxJkqJAA6Bty9ftpuDD4VuNRq9O6h4LCaBDO4oxd4-2BEPge9eeEJhl8LjmAjy4hyIthPiK8DkMniW8Lksg2vlJJJYt0wggHwmg-3D-3D\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contradict earlier pledges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They also argue that supporting ethanol goes against the goal of completely phasing out fuel-based engines, as proposed in the Green New Deal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wavering support for the ethanol mandate, along with the damage caused by the trade war, pushed some to believe the President is losing farmer support. But this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmprogress.com\/farm-life\/farmers-double-down-trump\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poll conducted at the end of July<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests the opposite, as 66.6% of farmers said they would vote to reelect the President, up from 59.6% at the same stage last year. Analysts suggested this could be thanks to the generous cash payouts he offered farmers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Indonesia, the government is taking action to protect its palm oil industry by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-22\/anti-palm-fight-rages-as-indonesia-bans-palm-oil-free-products\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">banning the use of\u00a0 \u201cpalm oil-free\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or \u201cno palm oil\u201d messages on food products. The government highlighted that the messages pushed consumers to think the product is not healthy, a claim that has not been proven. A similar move was implemented in Malaysia, the home of FGV Holding, the world\u2019s largest producer of crude palm oil. FGV reported poor results for its second quarter, which it mostly attributed to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/fgv-results\/malaysias-fgv-posts-5th-quarterly-loss-on-low-palm-oil-prices-idUSL3N25O1EZ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sharp drop in palm oil prices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The group is also looking to restructure its struggling sugar business, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/themalaysianreserve.com\/2019\/08\/28\/fgv-sinks-deeper-into-red-on-low-cpo-prices-weak-sugar-sales\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wilmar reportedly one of the investors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> interested in buying a stake.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still in Malaysia, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nst.com.my\/business\/2019\/08\/516618\/nestle-bullish-full-year-growth\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nestle reported a good growth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> momentum in the second quarter, as product innovations and portfolio enhancements sustained strong consumer demand. The same cannot be said about its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/business\/nestle-shuts-tongala-plant-with-100-jobs-to-go-c-423541\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tinned milk product<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Australia &#8211; Nestle announced plans to close its tinned milk factory in northern Victoria. Consumers are less interested in the products and it cannot compete with cheap imports, the group said. In Europe, Nestle expanded its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/insidefmcg.com.au\/2019\/08\/26\/nestle-expands-plant-based-range\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plant-based meat offer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by launching Incredible Mince and renewing the recipe of its Incredible Burger.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, a recent survey in the US found that the proportion of people who identify as vegetarian or vegan has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/238328\/snapshot-few-americans-vegetarian-vegan.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remained steady over the past 20 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and only represent a small portion of the population, at 5% and 3% respectively. But experts note that this hides the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/food\/wp\/2018\/08\/03\/you-might-think-there-are-more-vegetarians-than-ever-youd-be-wrong\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">growing popularity of semi-vegetarian diets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Regardless, in Argentina, beef <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-argentina-economy-beef\/steak-crazy-argentines-keep-buying-beef-even-after-peso-crash-inflates-prices-idUSKCN1VI1AB\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consumption is not dropping<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> even after a 15-20% hike in prices. The depreciating currency has led to a recent surge in prices but consumers are reportedly willing to lower their budget elsewhere before cutting down on beef purchases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japan\u2019s second-largest beer company, Kirin, announced a plan to spend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beveragedaily.com\/Article\/2019\/08\/28\/Coca-Cola-and-Kirin-find-new-avenues-amid-sluggish-markets-in-Japan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USD 1 billion to buy a 30% stake in Fancl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a maker of health foods and cosmetics, in order to deal with a shrinking local beer demand. In contrast, Coca-Cola will launch its first alcoholic drink ever in the country, a lemon-flavoured fizzy drink mixed with a grain-based alcohol called shochu. In India, Coca-Cola will launch a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/business\/story\/coca-cola-enters-india-non-alcoholic-malt-drink-mart-1592411-2019-08-28\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non-alcoholic malt-drink<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through its Barbican brand. Both products are seen as new alternatives amid a global shift away from soft drinks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most exciting Coca-Cola innovation, however, comes from the UK, where the group will be testing the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/tech\/coca-cola-uses-self-driving-19019675\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use of robots to deliver drinks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Alton Towers, a theme park resort.
