Whereas he did concede that it was better than eating meat in terms of the environmental impact, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/09\/02\/beyond-meat-uses-climate-change-to-market-fake-meat-substitutes-scientists-are-cautious.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researcher at Oxford<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> argued that it would be better still to consume unprocessed plants. He explained that \u201cwhile [plant-based meat] products have about half the carbon footprint than chicken does, they also have 5 times more of a footprint than a bean patty.\u201d And if this was making you think of waiting for lab-grown meat to be financially viable, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newfoodeconomy.org\/meat-planet-benjamin-aldes-wurgaft-interview\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">food anthropologist <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warned that it was not yet clear that this option would be much better for the environment either.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating fruits and vegetables might not be as healthy as we think, according to a recent study published in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/366\/bmj.l4897\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British Medical Journal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Researchers noted that, as expected, people who consume meat have a higher chance of reporting a coronary heart disease when compared to vegans and vegetarians, although it also found that vegans and vegetarians have a 20% higher stroke risk. The reasons are unclear, although experts said it could be linked to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/health-49579820\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lack of B12 vitamins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a vegetarian diet. Overall, dieticians argue that the healthiest diets involve eating a\u00a0 wide range of foods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We might also have to rethink whether buying <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weeklytimesnow.com.au\/news\/national\/packaging-fresh-produce-is-better-for-the-environment-research-finds\/news-story\/b1441cf6ff6a4edeca6c9ac9a0fca385\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unpackaged fresh food<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is better for the environment. A new study argues that the carbon footprint of food that wastes faster because it is not packaged is bigger than the environmental impact of the actual packaging. The solution, then, seems to be better packaging.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The media backlash against Brazilian agriculture policy &#8211; which is being blamed for the fires in the Amazon &#8211; continues. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-brazil-environment-grains\/adm-bunge-say-not-sourcing-from-newly-deforested-parts-of-amazon-idUSKCN1VK28Z?il=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADM, Bunge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/nestle-takes-step-to-ensure-its-not-contributing-to-amazon-deforestation-2019-08-28\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nestle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are some of the groups that have officially committed not to source from the newly deforested areas. They are using satellite data as well as ground teams to identify the affected areas. Some have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/opinion\/columnists\/2019\/09\/03\/trumps-trade-war-china-fueling-amazon-rainforest-fires\/2201495001\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blamed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Amazon fires on the US-China trade war which has led to a boost in exports from Brazil. However, Brazil\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agriculture.com\/markets\/newswire\/brazil-ships-record-corn-volume-in-august-ethanol-also-jumps\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soybean exports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dropped to 5.3 million mt in August, a fall from over 8 million mt in the same month last year at the start of the trade war. On the other hand, Brazil exported a record high 7.65 million mt of corn in August, double what was exported in the same month last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the US, Cargill tied up with White Dog Labs to work on a sustainable <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.world-grain.com\/articles\/12538-cargill-partners-to-create-new-sustainable-feed\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alternative to fishmeal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in aquafeed using corn feedstock. It is also investing USD 75 million in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.powderbulksolids.com\/news\/Cargill-Commits-75M-to-Expand-Pea-Protein-Production-08-30-2019\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Puris<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which supplies plant-based meat companies such as Beyond Burger, to set up a new pea protein plant in Minnesota.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Ghana, the 20,000 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myjoyonline.com\/business\/2019\/September-1st\/cargill-delivers-cocoa-sustainability-benefits-pays-6m-to-farmers.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">certified cocoa farmers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who supplied Cargill in 2018\/19 benefitted from a combined USD 2 million in sustainability premium, an increase of 33% on year. The group buys directly from farmers who bring the cocoa to local warehouses where they are registered, allowing full traceability. Cargill also announced a USD 121 million investment in expanding its cocoa grinding plant in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecofinagency.com\/finance\/0209-40450-us-trader-cargill-plans-120-5-mln-agribusiness-investment-in-cote-d-ivoire\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ivory Coast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As it continues to look for innovative solutions for the food and agriculture industry,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cargill announced the official opening of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.feednavigator.com\/Article\/2019\/08\/30\/Cargill-opens-University-of-Illinois-innovation-facility\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research lab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the University of Illinois. Similarly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.world-grain.com\/articles\/12530-adm-donates-25-million-to-support-illinois-feed-technology-center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said it would donate USD 2.5 million to the University of Illinois\u2019 Feed Technology Center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agricensus.com\/Article\/Bunge-to-cut-jobs-as-strategic-shakeup-continues-8238.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bunge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> continues on its cost-cutting tracks and announced it was reducing headcount at its New York headquarters, which will be moving to St Louis as part of the company\u2019s strategy to become more globally integrated. Analysts <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/business\/columns\/david-nicklaus\/in-bunge-st-louis-gains-a-company-in-transition\/article_976893f7-f7eb-54a3-be81-192cc45a3b89.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forecast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the group will probably look at selling its fertilizer business and could split the commodity trading side from food ingredients ahead of a possible sale. Glencore is seen as a potential acquirer, on the assumption that antitrust regulators would not approve a takeover or merger with ADM.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launched at the last G7, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodnavigator.com\/News\/Business\/Danone-spearheads-G7-initiative-to-tackle-inequality-It-s-not-a-matter-of-ideology-it-is-a-hard-realism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is chairing a new initiative, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/inclusive-growth\/businessforinclusivegrowth\/thirty-four-leading-global-firms-commit-to-tackling-inequality-by-joining-g7-business-for-inclusive-growth-b4ig-coalition-powered-by-the-oecd.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business for Inclusive Growth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (B4IG), which aims to help all member companies encourage diversity and fairness throughout their supply chain. The program, which will be managed by the OECD, has already identified some 50 projects worth USD 1 billion in funding.
