In France, some 20 mayors banned the weedkiller last month. This could be a game-changer for agriculture, as a farmer in Nebraska pointed out that glyphosate and Monsanto\u2019s Roundup Ready seeds were probably the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.omaha.com\/money\/nebraska-could-soon-be-at-center-of-national-legal-battle\/article_ea7c33a6-021f-544f-a99f-283ca1780b29.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biggest labour-saver<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since the invention of the tractor. That same farmer, however, was one of the first farmers in Nebraska to file a lawsuit against Monsanto after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the major scientific institutions disagree on whether glyphosate is safe but three juries in California have already ruled against Bayer &#8211; the new owner of Monsanto. Experts note that the outcome of the legal challenges might not come down to science, but rather Monsanto\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.omaha.com\/money\/nebraska-could-soon-be-at-center-of-national-legal-battle\/article_ea7c33a6-021f-544f-a99f-283ca1780b29.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">efforts to manipulate the regulatory process<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In France, the government is investigating a list of potentially influential individuals Monsanto compiled in order to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/business\/local\/bayer-says-monsanto-s-list-of-influential-people-was-not\/article_d2f8c331-46cd-5954-a414-afa1221f6523.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">control public opinion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Bayer conceded that the list was created but argued that it was not illegal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Environmental Protection Agency in the US explained that relying on industry studies when assessing pesticides was a common practice because companies must cover the costs of approval. It highlighted, however, that the data is shared and often collected by outside labs. The comment was in response to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/energy-environment\/460259-epa-sued-again-for-expanding-use-of-pesticide-harmful-to-bees\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">second lawsuit <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">filed against the agency which claimed that the recently approved sulfoxaflor pesticide would threaten bees, beekeepers and the whole food supply.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In France, a public consultation was opened on the proposal to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/agriculture-food\/news\/france-launches-public-consultation-on-pesticides-free-zones\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ban the use of pesticides within 5-10 metres<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of houses, due to come into force in January 2020. Associations argue that the distance is too small, while some mayors have already implemented a ban than can be as wide as 150 metres. The agriculture ministry warned that enforcing a 150-metre pesticide free-zone would reduce the total crop area by 20-30%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, Malaysian palm oil exporters are expected to lose market share in India following the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/platts\/en\/market-insights\/latest-news\/agriculture\/090519-india-raises-import-tax-on-malaysias-refined-palm-oil-for-6-months\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent 5% hike in import duty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. India said the higher levy would apply to refined palm oil to protect domestic refiners. In response to hostility towards palm oil and low prices, the Malaysian government announced a plan to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/business.inquirer.net\/278582\/malaysia-turning-to-food-crops-as-palm-oil-price-falls\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">promote the cultivation of food crops<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Palm oil is currently grown on 5 million ha, out of the 7 million ha of total agricultural area, but crude palm oil prices more than halved in the last eight years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Indonesian government, on the other hand, hopes it can address mounting palm oil inventories by promoting the use of biodiesel. It recently reported that a fleet of cars travelled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-09-06\/world-s-1st-26-000-mile-road-test-for-palm-diesel-found-safe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">42,000km on biodiesel and reported no engine issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The plan is to increase the current 20% blending mandate to 30% next year and possibly 100% in 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China approved 25 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-brazil-meat-china\/china-clears-25-brazil-meat-plants-for-export-lifting-shares-idUSKCN1VU1IN\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brazilian meatpacking plants for exports <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this week at a time when <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European countries are increasingly worried about buying meat from Brazil amid the spike in deforestation rate. Brazil already exports most of its meat to China, where the African Swine Fever (ASF) has decimated the local pig herd. The trade war with the US is also impacting the supply of soybeans and China announced that it will allow the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/platts\/en\/market-insights\/latest-news\/agriculture\/091019-china-opens-market-to-soybean-meal-from-argentina-government\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> import of soybean meal from Argentina<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China is stepping up efforts to deal with the ASF by boosting subsidies and has even started enforcing pork rations in some cities. Last week, the government said it would <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2019\/09\/04\/business\/china-pork-swine-fever-pigs\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">release emergency stocks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of frozen meat if necessary. Some estimates say China lost 100 million hogs to the disease while Vietnam said it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-vietnam-swinefever\/vietnam-culls-4-7-million-pigs-as-african-swine-fever-spreads-idUSKCN1VR1C6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">culled 4.7 million pigs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to contain the outbreak. The disease has also made its first <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-philippines-swinefever\/philippines-declares-first-african-swine-fever-outbreak-near-manila-idUSKCN1VU07V\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appearance in the Philippines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, despite a ban on pork imports and reinforced quarantine procedures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADM was the target of two separate antitrust lawsuits last week which accused the group of manipulating prices. The first one concerns its Golden Peanut subsidiary, along with another peanut sheller Birdsong Corp, which are accused by farmers of conspiring to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilotonline.com\/business\/vp-bz-peanut-antitrust-lawsuit-20190905-lvs76wb44ba4lencu23cy5uike-story.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fix unprocessed peanut prices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The two firms control 90% of the shelling industry. The second lawsuit accused ADM of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethanolproducer.com\/articles\/16507\/class-action-lawsuit-alleges-adm-manipulated-ethanol-futures\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manipulating the Argo ethanol market<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to benefit from its short position. Some traders had already complained to S&amp;P Global Platts that ADM was selling large amounts of ethanol on the cash market just before the market closed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bunge revealed that it owned a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/business\/local\/big-ag-wants-a-piece-of-booming-fake-meat-market\/article_8865302a-ef11-517f-8ad1-fd01d05bc24c.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.6% stake in Beyond Meat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The maker of plant-based meat alternatives recently reached a market capitalisation of USD 9.9 billion, more than Bunge. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-09-04\/kellogg-plans-bleeding-burger-as-it-plays-catch-up-for-faux-meat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kellog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.just-food.com\/news\/danone-backed-meat-analogue-business-sustainable-bioproducts-eyes-launch_id142192.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> joined the long list of firms planning to launch meat alternatives, while the University of Cambridge said it has removed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-cambridgeshire-49637723\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beef and lamb from its menu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reduce its carbon footprint. A less impressive announcement came from Unilver\u2019s Country Crock with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newfoodeconomy.org\/country-crock-plant-based-butter-margarine-dairy-farmers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launch of \u201cPlant Butter\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
