He noted that Brazil holds great potential for agricultural expansion that will be key to expand future food production. The state-controlled company said it will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-cofco-brazil-expansion\/cofco-to-invest-more-in-brazil-but-will-be-selective-says-exec-idUSKBN1W935A\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continue to invest in the country<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, although very cautiously. COFCO has already spent USD 4 billion in acquisitions recently, which enabled it to quickly grow in Brazil\u2019s grains, oilseeds, sugar, coffee and cotton sectors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Argentina overtook Brazil as the largest beef exporter to China as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/diplomacy\/article\/3027829\/ranchers-argentina-set-sights-bigger-cut-chinese-market-after\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beef sales more than doubled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the first seven months of the year. The overall protein demand has surged following the sharp drop in the local pig population. The swine fever has also impacted the supply of edible oils in China, which are produced during the processing of soybeans used to feed pigs. The country <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-09-23\/china-s-palm-oil-imports-surge-on-hog-virus-u-s-trade-spat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doubled its import of palm oil in August<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> compared to last year in order to compensate. Palm oil is also replacing the beans that would have been imported from the US.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Indonesia, the state-owned PTPN III\u00a0 &#8211; one of the largest land-owners in SouthEast Asia &#8211; said it raised USD 640 million to finance its capital and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.news24xx.com\/read\/news\/19094\/-PTPN-III-has-obtained-USD-3906-million-in-a-syndicated-loan-from-19-international-and-domestic-banks-\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expand activities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in palm oil, rubber, tea and sugarcane. The group manages 1.18 million ha of palm oil plantations. Meanwhile, the Center for International Forestry Research revealed that the deforestation rate related to palm oil on the island of Borneo <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forestsnews.cifor.org\/61908\/new-tool-shows-decline-in-oil-palm-related-deforestation-in-borneo?fnl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has steadily been declining<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since 2012, mainly because of low palm oil prices and government moratorium on new plantations. The center unveiled a new tool, called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/atlas.cifor.org\/borneo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Borneo Atlas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which lets anyone track deforestation on the island and the companies responsible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some 87 companies around the world have now agreed to join the UN\u2019s Global Compact and align their operations to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodnavigator.com\/Article\/2019\/09\/23\/Danone-and-Nestle-among-87-companies-committing-to-a-1.5-C-future\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">limit global temperature rise to 1.5\u00b0C<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Unilever was one of the first groups to follow the pledge announced back in June, which now also includes Danone, Nestle, Novozymes, Royal DSM and Natura. Many of these companies also launched the One Planet Business for Biodiversity ahead of the UN Climate Action Summit in NY, highlighting the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fooddive.com\/news\/food-companies-lead-the-charge-to-increase-biodiversity\/563531\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risks attached to the loss of biodiversity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Two-thirds of the world\u2019s crop production is <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/state-of-biodiversity-for-food-agriculture\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">based on only nine plants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: sugarcane, corn, rice, wheat, potatoes, soybeans, palm oil fruit, sugar beet and cassava.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, Harvard joined the Cool Food Pledge and will work to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2019\/9\/25\/clean-food-initiative\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce its greenhouse gas emissions related to food<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by 25% by 2030. Nonetheless, students note that the University still refuses to divest from fossil fuel investments, as the University President argues that the USD 39 billion endowment was not a tool for social change. The endowment has also tried to diversify from the risks of conventional stocks by investing in direct agriculture holdings across the world. The process was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-09-24\/harvard-was-freaking-out-how-a-270-million-brazil-bet-tanked\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seen by many as a failure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the total value of the investments was written down from USD 4 billion to USD 2.9 billion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some experts speaking at the UN summit attempted to defend the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-global-food-trade\/buying-local-groceries-isnt-always-better-for-the-environment-idUSKBN1W90RN\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">role global food trade<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can play in fighting climate change by disputing the idea that importing food always leads to more carbon emissions. Buying locally produced food only makes sense when the produce is in season, and driving a long distance to buy goods could emit more carbon than air freighting fresh produce from across the world, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hoffmanncentre.chathamhouse.org\/article\/delivering-sustainable-food-and-land-use-systems-the-role-of-international-trade\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hoffmann Centre for Sustainable Resource Economy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foodinsight.org\/consumers-perception-food-waste\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent survey <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">showed that people were also confused about how and why almost a third of all <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newhope.com\/news\/survey-finds-younger-consumers-most-concerned-about-wasting-food\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">food produced is wasted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Food waste was not as much of a factor for a majority of people when dining out, while people said their biggest reason to limit waste was to save money.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farmers in the US highlighted that barley is particularly vulnerable to sudden weather changes, such as drought, heat or floods, which means climate change could <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/changing-climate-brewing-trouble-for-the-craft-beer-industry\/18647493\/%20wral.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potentially threaten our beer supply<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
