Cargill said it was re-organising its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/cargill-restructuring\/cargill-creates-new-business-unit-focused-on-animal-human-health-idUSL2N26G11H\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">animal nutrition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> business to focus on animal health and wellness. The company is also working on its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcommerce360.com\/2019\/09\/30\/how-cargill-is-improving-digital-commerce\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ecommerce platform<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to better liaise with its customers and to simplify transactions. For instance, the platform should help Cargill communicate more effectively on issues including new tariffs due to the trade war. The company has also set up a new Land Use and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bakingbusiness.com\/articles\/49493-cargill-furthers-commitment-to-sustainability\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forest Protection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Advisory Panel to scale up efforts against deforestation. In Brazil, it wants to set up a start-up accelerator to finance ideas to solve the deforestation challenge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.checkout.ie\/a-brands\/nestle-pg-say-will-miss-2020-deforestation-goals-2-80733\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nestle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said it wouldn\u2019t meet its 2020 deforestation goals. It now targets 90% of its commodities to be \u201cdeforestation-free,\u201d up from 77% in 2019. On the other hand, it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodmanufacture.co.uk\/Article\/2019\/09\/30\/Nestle-denies-RAN-palm-oil-accusations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">denied<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> claims by the\u00a0 Rainforest Action Network that it had sourced palm oil from illegal suppliers in Indonesia. Nestle pointed out that 100% of its palm oil supply chain was closely checked using satellites. The group\u2019s senior vice president said he would welcome <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodnavigator.com\/Article\/2019\/09\/26\/Nestle-s-operations-chief-Magdi-Batato-talks-zero-emissions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increasing government regulation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to create more of a level playing field among stakeholders. For example, Nestle just inaugurated a 28,000 photovoltaic <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.technicalreviewmiddleeast.com\/power-a-water\/renewables\/nestle-opens-ground-mounted-private-solar-plant-in-dubai\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">solar plant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at its Al Maha site in Dubai as part of its target of zero net emissions by 2050. Separately, Nestle has bought a minority stake in Before Brands, a company that makes products with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nutraingredients-usa.com\/Article\/2019\/09\/30\/Nestle-invests-in-food-allergy-prevention\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> designed to prevent allergies from developing in young children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/in.reuters.com\/article\/us-luckin-coffee-ldc\/chinas-luckin-partners-with-louis-dreyfus-to-launch-juices-idINKBN1WB0TF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Louis Dreyfus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and China\u2019s Luckin Coffee announced a plan to jointly produce and distribute juices in China, on top of their plan to set up a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/malaysia-ipo-leong-hup-louisdreyfus\/update-1-after-coffee-louis-dreyfus-to-invest-in-poultry-ipo-idUSL5N22735G\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coffee roasting plant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Commentators pointed out that the venture helped Luckin compete with Starbucks in the Chinese market on the one hand, and was part of LDC\u2019s strategy to do more food processing, on the other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodbusinessnews.net\/articles\/14581-adm-joins-with-lg-chem-to-develop-biobased-acrylic-acid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is going to make yet another by-product from corn. It has tied up with Korean group LG Chem to make a sustainable corn-based acrylic acid used in polymers which can then be used in products such as diapers. A company official said the group was already making some 30 products from corn kernel. At the same time, ADM reportedly set up a company called Vantage Corn Processors under which it will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agra-net.com\/agra\/world-ethanol-and-biofuels-report\/analysis\/company\/united-states---adm-creates-new-unit-for-ethanol-business--1.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">incorporate its ethanol plants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the end of the year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2019\/10\/01\/olam-coffee-chief-calls-for-coffee-price-stabilization-fund\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has echoed a proposal by a famous <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/columbias-jeffrey-sachs-proposes-coffee-fund-to-help-poor-farmers-11562790285\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">economist <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that industry stakeholders in the coffee market get together to create a global fund to subsidise farmers in times of low coffee prices, as is currently the case. Olam\u2019s head of coffee argued that, because coffee is mostly grown in poor countries, farmers usually don\u2019t benefit from subsidies when prices fall below the cost of production. He suggested the fund could also help growers develop more sustainable practices. Nestle pointed out that, at the current pace of global warming, it might be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodnavigator.com\/Article\/2019\/09\/26\/Nestle-s-operations-chief-Magdi-Batato-talks-zero-emissions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impossible to grow coffee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by 2050. In the US, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supermarketnews.com\/sustainability\/kroger-albertsons-commit-sustainable-coffee\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">retailers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Kroger and Albertsons announced they were joining the Sustainable Coffee Challenge to do their bit in helping what Fair Trade USA called a \u201cpricing crisis\u201d in the coffee market.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s been progress in the cocoa sector, meanwhile. For one, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodbev.com\/news\/cargill-and-ifc-renew-partnership-to-improve-cocoa-sector\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cargill\u2019s cocoa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and chocolate business announced it was extending its partnership with the International Finance Corporation for a sustainable supply chain in West Africa, Indonesia and Brazil. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fooddive.com\/news\/barry-callebaut-upcycles-cacao-fruit-with-new-chocolate-and-snacks\/564032\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barry Callebaut<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said it would soon launch its WholeFruit Chocolate, a product that is made entirely from the cacao fruit, including parts that are usually thrown away. This is part of a plan to use only sustainable ingredients by 2025. Similarly, Nestle said it had started using the usually discarded cocoa plant fruit as a sweetener. Interestingly, Nestle also launched <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everythinglubbock.com\/news\/national\/nestle-launches-17-luxury-kitkat-bar\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KitKat bars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that will cost USD 17\/bar as part of its premium range of chocolate products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plant-based meat continued to gain traction last week as Impossible Foods received a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.valdostadailytimes.com\/news\/business\/impossible-foods-wins-un-global-climate-action-award-in-planetary\/article_e043365e-930b-5b09-905c-d66a0fb88dcf.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United Nations Global Climate Action Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in recognition of its contribution to the fight against climate change. The Spoon noted that in September alone, at least <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thespoon.tech\/from-nestle-to-trader-joes-six-new-plant-based-burger-brands-have-popped-up-in-the-last-month\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">six new plant-based burgers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had been launched in the US.
