The CEO said the situation will remain difficult for the second half of the year and will only improve in 2020. Nonetheless, the firm paid <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-10-07\/louis-dreyfus-pays-big-dividend-as-trade-tensions-curb-profit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USD 428 million in dividends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the first half of the year, the highest since 2014, as the chairwoman is reportedly looking to repay loans she took to buyout minority shareholders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China could have lost up to half of its pig herd to swine fever and the Vice Premier has set a target to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3031734\/china-breeds-giant-pigs-size-polar-bears-african-swine-fever\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">return to a normal herd size<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as early as next year. In the meantime, the country is facing a shortage of 10 million mt of pork, more than the global trade supply. To deal with the shortage, a local pig farmer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-swinefever-genetics\/china-flies-in-900-danish-breeding-pigs-to-replenish-herd-idUSKBN1WO1B9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">imported 906 breeding pigs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Denmark, the first pig imports this year. And a breeder in Nanning is looking to raise pigs that weigh up to 500kg, compared to the usual weight of around 125kg.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US producers are also looking to take advantage of the surge in Chinese pork demand. To that end, JBS USA announced that it will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-jbs-us-meatpacking\/jbs-usa-to-produce-pork-without-growth-drug-banned-by-china-seeking-more-exports-idUSKBN1WJ1YB\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remove ractopamine from its pig supply<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Ractopamine is a growth drug banned in China and the EU. A US competitor, Smithfield Foods, has already dropped the additive to export to China while Tyson Foods said it was considering a similar move.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global trade is due to see another wave of protectionism as the WTO ruled that the US could impose duties worth USD 7.5 billion on EU products in response to the EU support of Airbus. The US will levy a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/morning-agriculture\/2019\/10\/03\/the-new-dairy-program-is-paying-up-769293\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25% duty on EU food goods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> starting on October 18, but an EU official said the US seemed uninterested in finding a way to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/morning-agriculture\/2019\/10\/08\/usda-pork-slaughter-rule-draws-lawsuit-775473\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoid the tariffs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Food firms in the US warned that this could have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/10\/05\/us-importers-stockpile-cheese-as-tariffs-on-eu-cheeses-loom.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significant repercussions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on their businesses. A cheese importer said he was stocking up with USD 15 million worth of Italians cheeses ahead of the duties.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Dutch-based company, DSM, published some potentially good news for both the environment and meat lovers. It developed a new feed that can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newfoodeconomy.org\/feed-additive-methane-cow-burps\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce the amount of methane<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emitted by cows by up to 30%. The feed, called Bovaer, could be available in late 2020. Cows are responsible for a third of the methane emitted in the US but experts highlight two common misconceptions: the methane comes from burps, not farts, and the natural gas infrastructure still emits more methane.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/annals.org\/aim\/fullarticle\/2752328\/unprocessed-red-meat-processed-meat-consumption-dietary-guideline-recommendations-from\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new evaluation of published research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also tried to correct a misconception by arguing that there was not enough evidence to support the claim that eating red meat can have a negative health impact. Researchers analysed past observational studies and concluded that the impact of eating red meat was very small and not supported by strong evidence. Health experts were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/09\/30\/health\/red-meat-heart-cancer.html?module=inline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quick to criticise the paper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and some argued that nutritional research can not be held to the same standards as medical research. A professor highlighted that years of studies consistently found a negative health impact. Similarly, the UK said the sugar content in soft drinks dropped 28.8% since the introduction of a sugar tax in 2017, although the total consumption of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2019\/sep\/20\/britons-consuming-more-sugar-despite-tax-and-anti-obesity-drive\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sugar gained 2.6%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between 2015 and 2018. Public Health England explained that the overall <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/new-report-shows-further-sugar-reduction-progress-by-food-industry-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase in sales of sweet products<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was enough to offset the drop in sugar content.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonetheless, PepsiCo\u2019s said a good performance from its low-sugar and bubbly sparkling water brands will help with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-pepsico-results\/pepsicos-advertising-blitz-drives-profit-beat-solid-forecast-idUSKBN1WI0YY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revenue growth in 2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And Coca-Cola announced that it will launch its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-10-01\/coke-targets-u-s-energy-drink-market-in-challenge-to-monster\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">energy drink in the US<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as it noted that sales in the sector have been increasing while regular soft drink consumption has been steadily declining. Separately, Coca-Cola unveiled a new bottle that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/news\/these-new-coca-cola-bottles-are-made-from-marine-plastic-1806847\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uses recycled marine plastics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The plastic was collected in the Mediterranean sea and is used for 25% of the bottle packaging.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two very unusual products were unveiled this week. Glenlivet launched whisky cocktails <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/2019\/10\/7\/20902657\/glenlivet-scotch-capsule-collection-tide-pods-look-alike\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contained in a seaweed-based skin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that dissolves in the mouth.
