China reportedly agreed to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2019\/10\/14\/business\/us-china-trade-deal\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">double its import of US agricultural products<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and review some of its currency and intellectual property laws. However, an analyst called the trade targets \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-trade-china-agriculture\/trumps-hailing-of-50-billion-in-chinese-farm-purchases-seen-as-meaningless-idUSKBN1WT0TG\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meaningless<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d until a proper breakthrough is announced, while a Chinese trader mentioned that trade negotiations were always one Tweet away from breaking down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China has already started to increase the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-trade-china-agriculture\/china-says-it-already-bought-700000-tonnes-of-u-s-pork-data-shows-smaller-sales-idUSKBN1WU0YT\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amount of US goods it imports,<\/span><\/a> according to trade officials<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Nevertheless, the country might be looking to buy more US products simply because the supply in other countries such as Brazil is starting to tighten, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/platts\/en\/market-insights\/latest-news\/agriculture\/101119-us-corn-export-price-difference-to-brazil-corn-narrows\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">making US origins cheaper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Moreover, China has been very active in investing to improve Brazil\u2019s export infrastructure so it is unlikely to completely switch to other import origins.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the EU, the trade chief announced that the bloc will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/morning-agriculture\/2019\/10\/15\/how-usda-is-failing-farmers-on-climate-change-780469\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subsidise olive growers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help them deal with US tariffs. Under the plan, companies will receive money to buy and store excess olive oil. EU officials mentioned that the focus remained on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/video.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/webcast\/6c666dfe-022b-4d98-99c6-6f7445a61268\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finding a solution with the US<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to remove duties and address concerns around Airbus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indonesia and Malaysia plan to challenge the EU\u2019s decision to phase out the use of palm oil as a renewable fuel at the WTO, while they warn that they will also limit European imports in retaliation. In response, a member of the EU Parliament said he was confident the WTO <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eco-business.com\/news\/eu-parliament-unfazed-by-trade-fight-over-palm-biofuel-phase-out\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would agree with the EU\u2019s environmental concerns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He also clarified that palm oil will still be allowed as a fuel feedstock although it will not be recognised in the Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A French court announced a similar ruling as it maintained a law that would <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/uk-total-biofuels-palmoil\/in-blow-to-total-france-upholds-law-banning-palm-oil-from-biofuel-scheme-idUKKBN1WQ1C2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exclude palm oil from tax advantages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2020 despite an appeal by Total. The group recently spent EUR 300 million to convert its La Mede refinery to process palm oil and warned that it will not be competitive if it has to use local rapeseed instead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Palm oil producers who are certified as sustainable complain that large food companies refuse to pay a premium and that they mostly buy certified palm oil for European markets. Nestle revealed that 56% of the palm oil in EU goods was sustainable, compared to just 4% in India and 0% in China. In response, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) announced that members, including Nestle and Unilever, will now face fines unless they <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-palmoil-sustainability\/palm-oil-body-to-wield-stick-to-get-consumer-goods-giants-to-go-green-idUSKBN1WV0RT\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase the proportion of sustainable purchases by 15% every year.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, India reportedly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-india-malaysia-trade-exclusive\/exclusive-india-may-restrict-imports-of-palm-oil-other-goods-from-malaysia-sources-idUSKBN1WQ17Z\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">threatened to tax Malaysian palm oil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in response to a comment by the Malaysian Prime Minister who criticised India\u2019s Kashmir policies.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Malaysian minister said the country might <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freemalaysiatoday.com\/category\/nation\/2019\/10\/15\/sweet-deal-for-india-as-malaysia-mulls-importing-raw-sugar\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">import more raw sugar from India<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in order to ease trade relations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mercosur bloc is planning to <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-brazil-trade\/brazil-aims-to-forge-more-trade-accords-as-bolsonaro-heads-to-asia-idUSKBN1WU328\"><span>hold trade talks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Vietnam, Indonesia, South Korea and Singapore, according to Brazil&#8217;s trade minister. Mercosur also includes Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina. Separately, Brazil\u2019s space agency revealed that deforestation rates slowed in September but were still <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-brazil-environment\/deforestation-in-brazils-amazon-rainforest-surges-through-september-idUSKBN1WQ206\"><span>96% above the same month last year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the first nine months of the year, forest destruction was 93% higher, although the start of the rainy season should slow down burn rates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmentalists criticised large food companies in the UK for still using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-49973997\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soya beans sourced from deforested regions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Brazil. Although 23 brands, including many fast-food chains, signed the Cerrado Manifesto in 2017, the pledge was not signed by Cargill who is responsible for a large portion of the UK\u2019s soya imports. The firm argued that boycotting an area simply moved the problem somewhere else or left more room for other buyers. And a Brazilian official noted that boycotts could prevent sustainable economic development and make the problem worse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CEO of Mondelez commented that food makers need to distinguish between consumer trends and actual purchasing behaviours. He argued that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foodinstitute.com\/focus\/taste-drives-sales\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taste and not health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will continue to be the main driver of purchases because of the \u201cdifference between what people say and what they do&#8221;. McDonald\u2019s and Campbell Soup made similar remarks as their attempts to sell healthier products failed.
