Researchers warned that this could harm the chances of exporting cane products like ethanol to the EU or Japan where the environmental footprint is closely monitored. The sugar industry had previously lobbied against the move but recently suggested that deforestation concerns would be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.udop.com.br\/noticia\/2019\/11\/06\/bolsonaro-assina-decreto-que-simplifica-plantio-de-cana-de-acucar.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">handled by new policies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as the Forest Code and RenovaBio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts estimate that 80% of the forest fires in Brazil are started to make space for cattle ranches, despite the fact that the three largest meatpackers pledged to only buy cattle from deforestation-free areas. As a result, journalists are now reporting cases of \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/11\/02\/world\/americas\/brazil-amazon-fires-cowboys.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cattle laundering<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, where farmers move cows around to remove links to illegally deforested land.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the strong rise in deforestation, Brazil emitted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-brazil-environment-carbon\/brazil-carbon-emissions-stable-as-clean-energy-use-offsets-deforestation-idUSKBN1XF2EC\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only 0.3% more greenhouse gases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2018 when compared to 2017 thanks to the growth in clean energy sources such as ethanol and wind power. Nonetheless, some areas are witnessing dense smog and pollution because of the fire. In New Delhi, crop burning is one of the major reasons why the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weather.com\/science\/environment\/news\/2019-11-04-hazardous-smog-new-delhi-india-air-quality-index\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smog problem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> became so bad planes could not land and schools were closed. Ethanol, and other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstoday.in\/current\/economy-politics\/rice-straw-based-power-plants-can-be-answer-to-delhis-pollution-problem\/story\/388315.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advanced biofuels produced from crop waste<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, could be a good solution to address the pollution, although the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/politics\/policy\/north-india-s-stubble-burning-problem-has-an-rbi-connection-11572939873441.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lack of funding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is seen as a major obstacle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conservation International said it would accelerate its program to plant cocoa plantations and other trees to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-brazil-cocoa-environment\/program-using-cocoa-trees-to-restore-amazon-forest-to-be-expanded-idUSKBN1XG2YN\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restore some of the burnt Amazon areas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Commodity groups such as Olam and Mondelez pledged to pay a premium for the cocoa collected under the program. The cocoa grown in the Ivory Coast and Ghana, meanwhile, has recently become more expensive as the price for next season will include a Living Income Differential (LID) premium. Switzerland\u2019s Barry Callebaut said it would<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/barry-callebaut-results-conference\/barry-callebaut-expects-to-pass-on-ivory-coast-ghana-cocoa-bean-premium-idUSFWN27M0BZ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pass on the premium to its customers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, adding that most other players would probably do the same as the two countries account for 70% of the supply.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indonesia attempted to stop deforestation by banning new palm oil plantations for three years last September. However, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) said it was impossible to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-indonesia-palmoil\/indonesias-freeze-on-palm-oil-plantation-permits-lacks-transparency-industry-watchdog-idUSKBN1XG1PT\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">measure the success of the ban<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of a lack of transparency.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study conducted by Maersk and Lloyds Register identified alcohols like ethanol and methanol as some of the most promising renewable fuels to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/biofuels-news.com\/news\/maersk-lloyds-register-promote-ethanol-biomethane-as-net-zero-fuels-for-shipping\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> help the maritime industry reduce their emissions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, along with biomethane and ammonia. The COO of Maersk commented that most of the innovation will have to come from growing the production of these fuels to commercial scale. Maersk Tankers recently announced a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lloydslist.maritimeintelligence.informa.com\/LL1129851\/Cargill-Maersk-Tankers-and-Mitsui--Co-start-work-on-fuelsaving-technologies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">partnership with Cargill and Mitsui<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to study ship decarbonisation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nestle announced that 70% of its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfleet.com\/en\/safety-environment\/latin-america\/features\/nestle-mexico-green-fleet-pioneer-latin-america\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">car fleet in Mexico used hybrid engines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reduce their carbon footprint, and that they were struggling to reach 100% only because of a lack of hybrid trucks and vans. Nestle, along with Pepsi and Coca-Cola, has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-coca-cola-plastic-aluminium\/coca-cola-chooses-plastic-bottle-collection-over-aluminum-cans-to-cut-carbon-footprint-idUSKBN1XG2J6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moving towards using aluminium cans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to address concerns about the mounting plastic pollution. But the Coca-Cola CEO argued that the most environmentally-friendly solution in the long-run was actually to collect and recycle more plastic bottles. The group will not look to a strategic shift away from plastic, he added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Investors have been encouraging sustainable firms for years but a new breed of investors is now looking at going a step further by shorting companies with a lack of sustainable credentials, something Bloomberg dubbed \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-11-05\/the-green-short-funds-bet-against-laggards-in-sustainable-shift\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Green Short<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. Morphic Asset Management, for one, is short on Coca-Cola Amatil, an Australian bottler, because it is not doing enough for the environment and to tackle the obesity crisis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/agenda\/2019\/11\/04\/why-we-dont-know-what-to-eat-060299\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An in-depth analysis by Politico<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggested a reason why the food industry is having a hard time dealing with a rise in obesity and diabetes: the US government has been shrinking the amount of money it invests in nutrition research. As a result, the science on what is healthy food is inconsistent and even contradictory at times.
