They say that the current voluntary measures aren\u2019t working and that existing certification systems have failed as cocoa production, especially in West Africa, continues to cause deforestation and use child labour. Similarly, in the US, the Cocoa Merchants\u2019 Association of America warned that customs had the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-congress-cocoa\/senators-ask-cbp-to-block-imports-of-cocoa-made-with-forced-labor-idUSKCN1UB2TR\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">right to stop cocoa imports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if they suspected forced labour was involved.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The big chocolate producers say they are in favour of the so-called \u2018cocoa cartel\u2019 whereby Ivory Coast and Ghana, which represent two-thirds of global supply, are making buyers pay a USD 400\/mt premium, the equivalent of 16% of the current price. Both Hershey and Mars said it was important to help improve the livelihoods of the farmers, even though this will probably translate into <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mynbc5.com\/article\/could-the-cost-of-chocolate-soon-be-on-the-rise-a-reported-cocoa-cartel-could-drive-prices-up\/30417981\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher prices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world of coffee is also about to be shaken. The Vietnamese group Intimex, which exports a third of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-12-28\/nestle-faces-new-coffee-rival-as-vietnam-targets-instant-market\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vietnam\u2019s robusta beans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, announced a plan to use 30-40% of its green robusta beans to make instant coffee, from 10% currently. The aim is to cash in on fast-growing coffee consumption in Asia and is expected to affect the likes of Nestle and Olam who buy green beans for their domestic coffee plants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the US, another milk giant has filed for bankruptcy. Texas-based <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmprogress.com\/business\/borden-becomes-second-big-us-milk-producer-file-bankruptcy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Borden Dairy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said the milk business was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/food\/2020\/jan\/06\/us-dairy-industry-suffering-americans-consume-less-milk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">struggling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the face of higher costs and competition from plant-based alternatives. Changing eating habits, notably scrapping the breakfast cereal bowl, have led to US per capita milk consumption dropping by 40% between 1996 and 2018. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/01\/04\/us-dairy-farmers-battle-extinction-trump-trade-wars-lower-milk-prices.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trade war with China<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has made matters worse by causing a 50% drop in US dairy exports to China in 2019. Borden pointed out that almost 2,800 dairy farms had closed in the last year and a half, while USDA data shows 20,000 licensed dairy farms went out of business in the last 10 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.feedstuffs.com\/news\/australian-ag-hit-hard-bushfires\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Australia\u2019s dairy and livestock industries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are also set to go through a crisis with the fires raging through southern Australia, with current estimates suggesting that 12% of the sheep flock and 9% of the cattle herd would be affected. Farmers, who were already suffering from years of drought, are struggling to source feed which has become increasingly expensive. Dairy farmers are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2020-01-06\/nsw-fires-put-dairy-industry-at-risk\/11842386\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urging supermarkets to raise the milk price<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help them cope, warning of a milk shortage ahead. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/business\/companies-markets\/singapore-stock-watch-olam-says-operations-not-affected-by-australia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said its Australia operations had not been affected, however.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/commoditiesNews\/idAFL4N29C2TZ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cargill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> saw profits grow 19% in its latest Q2 results, having successfully anticipated a rise in meat protein demand from China as a result of the African Swine Fever. The CEO said that the group\u2019s strategy of divesting from non-core businesses was also paying off. Similarly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esmmagazine.com\/a-brands\/bunge-sells-margarine-mayonnaise-assets-brazil-85433\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bunge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sold its Brazilian mayonnaise and margarine production assets to JBS for USD 155 million as it continues to focus on core businesses. In the US, Bunge sold its 25% stake in an Iowa-based <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-biofuels-bunge\/bunge-sells-stake-in-u-s-ethanol-plant-as-biofuels-industry-struggles-idUSKBN1Z200B\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ethanol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> producer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chemengonline.com\/adm-expands-operations-in-brazil-with-yerbalatina-acquisition\/?printmode=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bought plant-based ingredients manufacturer Brazil\u2019s Yerbalatina Phytoactives this week to cash in on the growing trends for plant-based and natural alternatives combined with a growing demand for health supplements. The group also opened an <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.petproductnews.com\/News\/ADM-Opens-Animal-Nutrition-Technology-Center-in-Illinois\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">animal nutrition technology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> centre in the US state of Illinois with an aim to test ingredients in pet food and aquaculture and bring them to market as fast as possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, corporate documents showed that Margarita <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-01-03\/louis-dreyfus-mortgaged-her-company-to-secure-1-billion-loan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Louis-Dreyfus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pledged her stake in the company to get the loan she needed to buy the 16.6% stake from family members earlier last year. Commentators pointed out that this means Credit Suisse could gain ownership of the company should she fail to repay the loan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.delimarketnews.com\/quick-bite\/nestle-sell-60-percent-stake-herta-and-create-joint-venture-casa-tarradellas-Marco-Settembri\/lilian-diep\/mon-12302019-0500\/8988\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nestle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sold 60% of Herta to Casa Tarradellas as part of a Joint Venture which will see Nestle leaving the meat part to be managed by Casa Tarradellas while Nestle continues to handle the vegetarian side of the business. The company <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodbev.com\/news\/nestle-completes-20-billion-share-buyback-programme-and-launches-another\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bought back<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> some 225 million shares for USD 21 billion, with another USD 21 billion buyback planned by the end of 2022.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The head of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/plantbased-food-revolution-is-here-to-stay-dunkin-chairman-153424751.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dunkin Donut<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> warned sceptics that the plant-based meat craze was here to stay. While Domino\u2019s Pizza is testing the fake meat on its pizzas, Wells Fargo forecasts the market would triple over the next decade.
