Experts say China does not want to expose itself by announcing to the market <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agweb.com\/article\/markets-could-have-more-questions-answers-after-phase-one-signing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how much exactly it will buy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially since the country is expected to base its purchases on prices. Overall, market participants are doubtful that China will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-trade-china\/china-to-ramp-up-u-s-buys-under-trade-deal-but-skeptics-question-targets-idUSKBN1ZD0FN\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meet its commitment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to ramping up the purchase of US products to USD 80 billion over the next two years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The USD 80 billion target seemed more unlikely as China reportedly decided to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-ethanol-policy-exclusive\/exclusive-china-suspends-national-rollout-of-ethanol-mandate-sources-idUSKBN1Z71R8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">postpone its plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to mandate a 10% ethanol blend in the fuel supply in 2020. The country cited dwindling corn stocks and the limited domestic production capacity as the main reasons, while analysts said the move was to avoid <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/platts\/en\/market-insights\/latest-news\/agriculture\/010620-commodities-2020-chinas-resumption-of-us-ethanol-imports-by-no-means-likely-despite-phase-one-deal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depending on US imports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trade relations between India and Malaysia remain strained since the Malaysian Prime Minister criticised India\u2019s Kashmir policy back in October. Reuters reported that the government has unofficially instructed Indian importers to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-india-malaysia-palmoil-exclusive\/exclusive-india-urges-boycott-of-malaysian-palm-oil-after-diplomatic-row-sources-idUSKBN1ZC0T6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stop buying palm oil from Malaysia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and that most traders now pay a premium to import from Indonesia instead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malaysia faced more bad news as the Roundtable of Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-malaysia-palmoil-fgv\/malaysias-fgv-fell-short-of-labor-norms-palm-industry-watchdog-says-idUSKBN1ZE149\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suspended the certification<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of plantations owned by FGV Holdings. A previous suspension was lifted in August but the RSPO said that concerns over forced labour had not been addressed after an inspection in October.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The US Supreme Court is asking the White House whether it should <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-01-13\/child-slavery-appeals-by-nestle-cargill-draw-high-court-inquiry\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hear an appeal by Nestle and Cargill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over a 2005 case accusing them of complicity in child slavery on cocoa farms in the Ivory Coast. In the appeal, Cargill argues that the plaintiffs failed to show that decisions taken in the US could be linked to the injuries suffered. The Supreme Court decision would potentially give companies \u201ca broader shield from lawsuits by victims of overseas atrocities\u201d, according to Bloomberg.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Consumer Brands Association (CBA) officially <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/morning-agriculture\/2020\/01\/14\/food-lobby-reborn-as-packaged-goods-group-784359\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launched in the US<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2019\/10\/10\/food-industry-consumer-brands-association-043892\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">journalist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said it was a sign of the diminishing relevance of the 100-year old Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) and the \u201csymbolic end of the Big Food era\u201d. The new lobbying group was born out of disagreements in the GMA and is designed to be consumer-focused.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another pesticide produced by Bayer, called thiacloprid, was targeted by lawmakers in the EU who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-eu-bayer-pesticide\/eu-commission-bans-bayer-pesticide-linked-to-harming-bees-idUSKBN1ZC136\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">refused to extend its authorisation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> beyond April 30, 2020. The European Commission ruled that it was having a dangerous impact on groundwater quality, along with human and insect health. On the other hand, a spokesperson for Bayer insisted that the company, and many farmers, still believed in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/morning-agriculture\/2020\/01\/10\/bayers-outlook-for-2020-784258\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the future and safety of glyphosate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Nonetheless, she mentioned that the group would spend USD 6.7 billion over 10 years to find an alternative as a total of 42,000 people had sued the group as of October.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In France, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/agriculture-food\/news\/despite-plans-to-ban-glyphosate-its-sales-in-france-increase-by-10\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a plan to quickly phase out glyphosate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other phytosanitary products, called the Ecophyto plan, is being challenged by a strong demand from farmers, the lack of alternatives and a lack of alignment with neighbouring countries. The government revealed that glyphosate sales jumped 10% in 2018 and that it had delayed its Ecophyto plan several times since it was launched in 2008.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still in France, the agricultural cooperative Limagrain announced plans to cultivate legumes such as peas, beans and chickpeas to cash in on the booming <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/france-limagrain\/frances-limagrain-to-launch-plant-based-protein-food-next-year-idUSL8N29J4WK\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">demand for plant-based products<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, Greenpeace USA highlighted that the growing effort to replace plastics with plant-based alternatives might just produce more single-use items and increase the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2020\/01\/14\/plastic-to-go-containers-are-bad-but-are-the-alternatives-any-better\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">demand for valuable environmental resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
