Analysts, who were already sceptical about the targets before the virus outbreak, say that demand in the country, which is effectively shut down, will drop significantly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China\u2019s industrial and agricultural <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmprogress.com\/market-news\/fear-coronavirus-pounds-markets\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supply chain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also likely to be affected given the importance of the river port in Wuhan. Industry experts have been trying to draw comparisons with the SARS outbreak in 2002 and point out that the country\u2019s supply chain is now much more integrated and depends hugely on river freight. Basically, investors expect the situation is likely to get worse.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the US, the President has moved on to his next big goal: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmprogress.com\/trade\/trumps-next-target-wto\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reforming the WTO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; which he considers to be another \u201cworst trade deal ever.\u201d He said he had talked with the WTO chief in Davos about making \u201cdramatic\u201d changes in the organisation. Bloomberg argued that the strategy the US has been using so far to renegotiate trade deals may not work in a multilateral organisation like the WTO.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The head of the WTO, for his part, cautioned that changes would probably take a long time to happen but he welcomed the approach. The EU Agriculture Commissioner, meanwhile, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmprogress.com\/trade\/eu-ag-ministers-stress-importance-wto\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the US Agriculture Secretary to uphold the WTO to protect farmers from trade disputes. The US Agriculture Secretary <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/agriculture-food\/news\/us-agriculture-chief-urges-eu-to-listen-to-science-not-fear-mongering-ngos\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">responded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by saying that EU farmers were running the risk of becoming uncompetitive on a global scale because of the ban on gene-editing technology and other limiting regulations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloombergquint.com\/onweb\/cargill-s-ceo-is-concerned-about-u-s-farmers-as-tariffs-persist\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cargill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is concerned about the lack of agricultural purchases from China, warning that US farmers were struggling as the Asian giant had kept most import tariffs in place. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejakartapost.com\/news\/2020\/01\/23\/regulatory-consistency-key-to-omnibus-law-cargill-indonesia-tells-government.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indonesia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the company complained that conflicting regulations, as well as patchy implementation, were making it difficult to compete. It called on the government to make sure it implements regulations fairly among all stakeholders. Back in the US, Cargill increased the production capacity of its Iowa <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.world-grain.com\/articles\/13198-cargill-expands-animal-nutrition-production-facility\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">animal health products<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> plant and invested in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloombergquint.com\/business\/softbank-cargill-back-cultured-meat-startup-as-interest-swells\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cultivated meat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> company Memphis Meats Inc. The start-up, which raised USD 161 million in funding, will be focusing on commercialising cultivated meat. The CEO, meanwhile, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloombergquint.com\/onweb\/cargill-s-ceo-is-concerned-about-u-s-farmers-as-tariffs-persist\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Cargill had no plans to go public but was looking at selling assets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-argentina-soyproducts-vicentin-exclus\/exclusive-argentine-soy-crusher-vicentin-in-takeover-talks-with-firms-including-glencore-sources-idUSKBN1ZN2F0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glencore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is reportedly poised to take over Argentina\u2019s agricultural giant Vicentin. Sources told Reuters that a sale would save the group, which has some USD 1.3 billion in debt, from declaring bankruptcy. Experts warned that bankruptcy could cause a social and economic crisis, including for its main creditor the National Bank. Vicentin already sold to Glencore part of its shares in Renova, the joint venture they have together. However, with such high debt, it will be difficult to value the company which may have to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/urgente24.com\/medios\/exclusivo-24\/la-clave-de-vicentin-son-los-activos-portuarios\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nationalised<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The crisis in the country\u2019s grain sector is growing with farmers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agricensus.com\/Article\/Argentina-farmer-associations-threaten-grain-sales-suspensions-10237.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">threatening<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to withhold grains sales in protest against the increase in export taxes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agriculture.com\/markets\/newswire\/louis-dreyfus-plans-fish-farming-bio-energy-in-chinese-venture\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Louis Dreyfus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is tying up with China\u2019s Donlink to build a USD 1 billion food industrial park near the Nansha port in China. The park will include plants that make aquaculture, bioenergy as well as grains trading, Louis Dreyfus said. The trading group also received a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/seenews.com\/news\/ebrd-lending-100-mln-to-bulgaria-romania-active-louis-dreyfus-684473\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USD 100 million loan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, part of which will be used to improve the integration of small cotton farmers in its supply chain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-allergan-m-a-nestle\/nestle-buys-allergan-business-to-expand-in-medical-nutrition-idUSKBN1ZQ0GW\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nestle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bought pancreatic enzyme companies Zenpep and Viokace this week. The CEO said the acquisitions were part of a plan to grow the group\u2019s medical nutrition offerings, a segment that is growing faster than mainstream food. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercepharma.com\/pharma\/abbvie-allergan-sell-3-drugs-to-win-u-s-antitrust-clearance-and-take-astra-nestle-into-new\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Analysts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said this could be the sign of a return for Nestle into the business of prescription medicines, a market it exited in 2019.
