China was not expected to meet the US import targets before the virus outbreak but, as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-02-03\/it-ll-be-a-while-before-china-spends-billions-on-u-s-farm-goods?srnd=premium&amp;sref=nre1Tdnz\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">futures broker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> put it, now \u201cthey have a good excuse at least.\u201d Instead, the country has been importing grains from Brazil, Australia, Canada and France where prices are lower. The CEO of ADM remained optimistic, however, expecting imports to pick up in the second half of the year when prices drop with the start of the US harvest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response to the virus outbreak, North Korea reportedly closed its borders and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-health-northkorea\/burdened-by-sanctions-north-korea-sees-coronavirus-threaten-economic-lifelines-idUSKBN1ZY0HB\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stopped almost all cross-border travel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While the country\u2019s focus on self-reliance means it produces a lot of items like snacks or clothes, the raw materials mostly come from China and the border closure would have a significant impact on the economy if they have to remain closed for a while.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pork producers around the world are still watching out for the African Swine Fever (ASF) and hoping they can protect their livestock from the disease. The Philippines reported the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-philippines-swinefever\/philippines-detects-first-african-swine-fever-outbreak-in-southern-province-idUSKBN1ZW05Y\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first case in the Mindanao province<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the disease is now spreading through Eastern Europe. In Germany, the state of Brandenburg built a 12km electric fence on its border with Poland to stop wild boars from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-germany-swinefever\/paradise-lost-looms-for-german-farmers-as-swine-fever-nears-idUSKBN1ZX00L\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">infecting the local livestock<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Germany has been able to benefit from the uptick in demand so far as exports to China surged 43% in Jan-Jul 2019. However, a German producer warned that the spread was inevitable, which could push China to stop German imports.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CEO of Cargill noted\u00a0 that consumers are increasingly focused on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegazette.com\/subject\/news\/business\/the-future-is-microingredients-discovery-at-diamond-v-led-cargill-to-work-with-goop-20200204\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">need to change animal agriculture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Cargill recently purchased Delacon, a producer of animal feed additives, and Diamond V, who makes animal supplements from fermented ingredients. Diamond V also launched a human supplement brand that focuses on gut health. A Cargill scientist said \u201cprobiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics and phytogenics\u201d could all play a role, while the CEO argued that the \u201cthe future is micro ingredients\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For its part, Nestle announced that it will add USD 200 million to its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-aimmune-nestle-stake\/nestle-raises-stake-in-aimmune-after-peanut-allergy-therapy-approval-idUSKBN1ZZ1VX\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">investment in the pharmaceutical company<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Aimmune Therapeutics, bringing its total investment to USD 473 million. Aimmune Therapeutics recently received approval for a therapy to lower allergic reactions to peanuts in children. Nestle also announced a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livekindly.co\/nestle-partners-with-vegan-suppliers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">partnership with Burcon and Merit Functional Foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, two Canadian vegan protein manufacturers. The head of Burcon noted that the recent craze surrounding plant-based products \u201chas been a wild ride.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The response from some meat producers has been less enthusiastic, however. The Maryland Farm Bureau expressed its support for a proposal to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fredericknewspost.com\/news\/economy_and_business\/agriculture\/maryland-bill-would-define-what-can-be-labeled-meat\/article_42830d6c-d700-5479-b105-b51186fbd09d.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ban the use of the word \u201cmeat\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for plant-based or lab-grown products. Missouri passed a similar law in 2018. In Florida, Burger King argued that it never advertised the &#8220;Impossible Whoppers&#8221; as vegan. The comment was in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/reuters\/2020\/02\/03\/business\/31reuters-rstrnt-brnd-burger-king-impossible-whopper-lawsuit.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">response to a lawsuit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> complaining that the plant-based burgers were cooked on the same grills as other burgers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food manufacturers like Nestle, Mondelez and Danone, have made impressive strides in reducing the environmental impact of their own operations but are struggling to address the impact of their supply chain. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/marketintelligence\/en\/news-insights\/latest-news-headlines\/cost-of-environmental-damage-linked-to-nestl-danone-and-mondelez-rises-sharply-56387844\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggested that the cost of environmental damage as a proportion of revenue of these three firms has been increasing since 2015, after six years of decline. In essence, major corporations have \u201coutsourced their environmental impact to their supply chains\u201d, an expert commented.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea of using agricultural crops to help lower the emissions of aviation and marine transport has been gaining ground as other alternatives like electricity remain a distant prospect. Sustainable Aviation, a group representing the UK\u2019s aviation industry, has set a target to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-britain-aviation-emissions\/british-aviation-industry-outlines-plans-for-net-zero-emissions-by-2050-idUSKBN1ZY009\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">become carbon neutral by 2050<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, thanks to carbon offset programs, the use of bio-jet fuel, also called sustainable aviation fuel, and carbon pricing. The group hopes to achieve the goal despite a 70% expected growth in air passengers and the opening of a third runway in Heathrow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, Maersk said it was hoping to move to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenbiz.com\/article\/maersk-testing-biofuel-could-alter-course-shipping\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> phase two of its project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to develop a new fuel to lower the emissions of its shipping fleet. Researchers at Copenhagen University are studying a drop-in heavy biofuel blend made from lignin and ethanol called LEO. And the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company said it was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.ae\/business\/energy\/adnoc-to-trial-biofuel-for-ships-as-it-caps-sulphur-emissions-1.972502\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testing the use of biofuels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help meet new emissions standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most creative way to transform food this week comes from an international team of researchers who announced the discovery of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.techexplorist.com\/antiviral-materials-sugar\/29577\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">modified sugar molecule<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with broad-spectrum antiviral properties.
