This was in part thanks to higher sales and margins out of South America and farmers in Argentina selling their crops early in anticipation of the increase in export taxes. The CEO said the company was benefiting from becoming more \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/bunge-reports-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-2019-results-301003428.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nimble<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d as well as implementing a \u201cmore rigorous approach to risk management.\u201d Overall, however, the group reported total net losses for 2019 of USD 1.28 billion, from an income of USD 267 million in 2018. The CEO warned that there remained a lot of uncertainty for US origination in terms of the US-China trade deal in 2020, in addition to the African Swine Fever and Coronavirus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olam, on the other hand, said it should see a net one-time post-tax gain of USD 52 million for the last quarter of 2019 as a result of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/companies-markets\/olam-to-post-one-time-net-gain-of-s72m-for-q4-from-restructuring-initiatives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">company\u2019s restructuring<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which included the sale of a number of assets and shares.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, ADM was able to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wholefoodsmagazine.com\/suppliers\/news-suppliers\/adm-reports-quarterly-results-and-plant-protein-trends\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deliver a solid fourth quarter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with net earnings of USD 504 million, despite the challenging market environment. The company published its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodbusinessnews.net\/articles\/15379-adm-study-highlights-2020-plant-based-protein-trends\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OutsideVoice Protein Perception &amp; Awareness Study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which suggested that plant-based food will continue to see impressive growth in 2020. The study found that 44% of US consumers now identified as flexitarian. In anticipation, ADM will expand its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newfoodmagazine.com\/news\/104998\/adm-to-expand-european-production-of-non-gmo-protein-concentrate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non-GMO soy protein factory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Europoort, Netherlands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decision might be particularly well-timed as members of the EU Parliament discussed a proposal to impose a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.feednavigator.com\/Article\/2020\/02\/05\/EU-lawmakers-discuss-sustainability-charge-on-meat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tax on meat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as part of the integrated food policy Farm to Fork (F2F) under the EU Green Deal. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onegreenplanet.org\/environment\/eu-meat-tax-environmental-damange-eat-healthy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> argued that a meat tax was essential to reach carbon neutrality and lower healthcare costs. Nonetheless, the farmer\u2019s union Copa-Cogeca said the tax would impose a terrible burden on farmers, especially if it was only implemented in the EU.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmentalists added that the overall F2F effort would be jeopardised if the EU continued to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/agriculture-food\/news\/europe-aims-to-make-its-food-a-global-green-standard-despite-trade-concerns\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">negotiate new trade deals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with countries like Brazil and the US. Some activists are concerned that the EU will not be able to stand up to pressure from the US, which recently threatened to target Germany\u2019s auto industry with tariffs to push for concessions on agricultural trade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists continue to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/02\/03\/well\/eat\/meat-increases-heart-risks-latest-study-concludes.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">show evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that eating red meat is linked to a small but increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease, such as this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/2759737?guestAccessKey=f17333ad-bd7b-413d-a71b-8eadbcfe30cb&amp;utm_source=For_The_Media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_content=tfl&amp;utm_term=020320\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JAMA Internal Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> paper which gathered data on 30,000 people over 30 years. Government guidelines against over-eating beef &#8211; which started as early as 1977 in the US &#8211; could have contributed to the growth of the chicken nugget, now infamous for being one of the most highly processed meat products. Right on cue, KFC and Beyond Meat launched <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/2020\/2\/4\/21122370\/kfc-beyond-chicken-nuggets-fake-meat%5C\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond Fried Chicken<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The product, called Alpro Cuisine Soya Whippable, only contains 2% soy but 25% palm oil. In response, Danone said it would change the packaging to highlight the palm oil content, pointing out that the palm oil was certified under the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil and one of the most sustainable sources of oil.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California-based Farmers Business Network (FBN), a small start up hoping to disrupt the agricultural world, complained to Canadian authorities that big commodity groups were <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/canada-antitrust-officials-probe-cargill-other-firms-in-dealings-with-startup-fbn\/567622542\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abusing their dominant position<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to block its growth. FBN launched an online marketplace for farmers to buy agricultural inputs, thus cutting out the traditional middleman. The Canadian Competition Bureau confirmed it was investigating the case and had extended the claim to include Cargill and Bayer.
