The USDA said the news, announced on Twitter in all-caps, was a surprise. Meanwhile, lawmakers are looking at how the trade aid money &#8211; over USD 23 billion since 2018 &#8211; is being distributed. Critics point to the fact that foreign firms like Brazil\u2019s JBS are receiving hundreds of millions of dollars in government funds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The giant meat processor JBS received some more good news this week as the USDA ended a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/morning-agriculture\/2020\/02\/24\/from-bigger-tractors-to-trade-aid-30-785614\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ban on raw beef imports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Brazil. The agency blocked Brazilian imports in 2017 on health and safety concerns. Otherwise, US efforts to isolate Iran have allowed it to take the position of biggest pistachio grower in the world. India usually imports 50% of its diammonium phosphate from China but the lockdown of Hubei province is forcing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-02-24\/made-in-china-fertilizer-becomes-scarce-for-top-buyer-of-product\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India to look for alternative suppliers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In North Korea, the price of many basic goods started to fall again after a spike caused by the closure of the border with China. Sources reported that the price of imported goods dropped as distributors were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/north-korean-state-orchestrates-lower-prices-soybean-sugar\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forced to release their stocks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China is also one of the largest producers of alternative sweeteners and Coca-Cola warned that the ongoing virus <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2020\/02\/25\/business\/coca-cola-coronavirus-artificial-sweeteners\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will lead to a shortage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Although China is the group\u2019s third-biggest market, it expects that the coronavirus will only affect revenues by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msweet.com.cn\/eportal\/ui?pageId=1014425&amp;articleKey=2823203&amp;columnId=1013987\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1-2% in the quarter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Likewise, Danone said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/87aa2a66-580d-11ea-a528-dd0f971febbc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sales will be down<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about USD 100 million in the first quarter because of the virus. Danone also pledged to spend USD 2.2 billion over the next three years in order to \u201cbuild climate change resilience\u201d into the business. The money will go to reduce plastic waste and to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/danone-pledges-22-billion-climate-plan-2020-02-26-64852256\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower the carbon footprint<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of its supply chain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The environment was also on the minds of British people as the UK is looking to launch post-Brexit trade talks. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/politics\/brexit\/eu-regulations-poll-best-for-britain-environment-food-jobs-1996020\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YouGov poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that 57% of respondents thought the UK should enforce stricter environmental laws once it leaves the EU, while 37% said food safety standards should be strengthened, compared to 6% who thought they should be loosened. Moreover, farmers are worried as the environment secretary said he could not guarantee that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/4a3fbc10-5892-11ea-a528-dd0f971febbc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">food standards will not be lowered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. British farmers are afraid they will be unable to compete amid cheap imports, funding cuts and a restriction on hiring immigrant workers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Netherlands only narrowly approved the free-trade agreement with Canada, in force since 2017, amid pressure from local farmers afraid of competition from imports. Farmers across the bloc have also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-02-20\/trade-war-latest-pitchforks-emerge-as-eu-farmers-face-aid-cuts-k6up1iam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opposed efforts to sign new deals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Mercosur, Australia and New Zealand. Otherwise, the EU\u2019s efforts to punish Cambodia for human rights violations are being challenged as the Cambodian Prime Minister said the state will compensate for losses faced by local companies. The EU ended about 20% of the preferential duties under the Everything But Arms scheme but the PM said he will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-health-cambodia-eu\/cambodian-pm-offers-tax-breaks-to-factories-hit-by-coronavirus-eu-tariff-losses-idUSKCN20I0ZF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">offer tax breaks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to affected exporters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pakistan declared a state of emergency due to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pakobserver.net\/declaring-emergency-against-locust\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">locust outbreak<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that has destroyed crops, including wheat and cotton. The Prime Minister approved a plan which includes buying planes to spray pesticides. India\u2019s agriculture ministry blamed the country for not reacting fast enough and letting the invasion spread, adding that some 400,000ha of crops in northern India had been affected. In response to a video of locusts in Xinjiang, China, the agriculture department said this was a desert variety which was <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yntw.com\/2020\/02\/7538.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unlikely to survive in China<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Besides, the Himalaya provides an efficient wall against the migration of locusts, while the country has among the world\u2019s best locust monitoring and extermination systems, it said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The situation is more serious in Africa, however, as locusts are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/barnabasfund.org\/en\/news\/locust-swarms-confirmed-in-south-sudan-as-devastating-plague-spreads-across-east-africa-and\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">devastating crops in South Sudan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, having crossed over from Uganda.
