{"id":3132,"date":"2020-03-12T15:07:06","date_gmt":"2020-03-12T15:07:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commodityconversations.com\/wordpress2\/?p=3132"},"modified":"2020-03-12T15:07:06","modified_gmt":"2020-03-12T15:07:06","slug":"commodity-conversations-weekly-press-summary-107","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/commodityconversations.com\/wordpress2\/2020\/03\/12\/commodity-conversations-weekly-press-summary-107\/","title":{"rendered":"Commodity Conversations Weekly Press Summary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the world is still cautiously analysing the impact of the new coronavirus outbreak, it has been almost two years since the first cases of the African swine fever were detected in China and some of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/mar\/11\/african-swine-fever-destroying-small-pig-farms-as-factory-farming-booms-report\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-term consequences are now clearer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For one, up to 25% of the world\u2019s pig population died, while<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grain.org\/en\/article\/6418-building-a-factory-farmed-future-one-pandemic-at-a-time\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a new report <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suggested that only large-scale industrial pig farms were able to overcome the disease and are now reaping the benefits of soaring prices. In contrast, China\u2019s 40 million small-scale farmers, who did not have the funds to recover their losses or the organisation to apply for government help, might have to stop herding pigs as a result.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some exciting news was reported by researchers around the world who have successfully tested <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pigprogress.net\/Health\/Articles\/2020\/3\/Moderate-optimism-about-Chinese-ASF-vaccine-551287E\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">safe and effective vaccines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against swine fever. Teams in China and the US reported some successful tests, although experts warn against being too optimistic too soon. An important step will be to find a vaccine that is broadly applicable to different strains, on top of finding a way to address contamination in the wild boar population. In the meantime, the USDA published its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-swinefever-usda\/u-s-says-it-will-ban-pig-shipments-if-fatal-hog-virus-is-detected-idUSKBN20T2IQ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">action plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to deal with an outbreak in the US. The country would ban all shipments of pigs for at least three days in the case an infection was detected.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commodity markets were affected by the sudden drop in oil prices this week following the dispute between Saudi Arabia and Russia. Many agricultural producers found out that the price of their products is now tied to energy prices because they are used to make biofuels, such as EU rapeseed, American corn, Brazilian sugarcane and Indonesian palm oil. As one journalist put it, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-03-09\/oil-s-epic-crash-reminds-farmers-they-re-also-energy-traders\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">farmers are now also energy traders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. On the other hand, some suggested that oil prices no longer have an impact on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/exame.abril.com.br\/economia\/por-que-o-preco-do-petroleo-nao-importa-para-as-energias-renovaveis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">renewable energy investments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the short and medium-term. Only an unlikely structural shift in oil prices would change the situation for clean energy producers, like Brazil\u2019s ethanol sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cargill announced a partnership with Rainmaking to find solutions to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cargill.com\/2020\/cargill-joins-rainmaking-and-other-industry-leaders\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decarbonise the shipping sector<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Singapore. Rainmaking launched a similar program in Europe which finds viable technological solutions and encourages industry leaders to support them. In Sweden, Sekab and Vertoro from the Netherlands announced the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/biofuels-news.com\/news\/new-swedish-plant-ready-to-set-sail-delivering-biofuel\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">construction of a demo plant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that will make a proprietary blend of ethanol from waste wood products. The fuel will initially be used by the shipping industry but could also serve for cars and planes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The private equity arm of the Rabobank Group, Rabo Corporate Investments, announced an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-03-11\/rabo-corporate-makes-first-insect-investment-with-protix-stake\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">investment in Protix BV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Dutch producer of insect protein. The company makes an alternative to animal and fish feed using the larvae of the black soldier fly. Meanwhile, the plant-based meat producer Impossible Foods said it was able to address scaling issues<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-03-03\/impossible-foods-cuts-beef-price-by-15-for-its-distributors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and reduced prices by 15%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for food service distributors. Its products still cost around USD 7.90\/lb, compared to USD 1.79\/lb for 81% ground beef, but better than the competitor Beyond Meat which is still selling for around USD 11.98\/lb.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Investors are now looking at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-03-02\/bill-gates-led-fund-invests-in-synthetic-palm-oil-startup\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">synthetic palm oil,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including a Bill Gates fund which announced an investment in C16 Biosciences, a start-up that produces palm oil from food waste. However, experts note that the current technology is far from being scalable, although it could help address a shortage of certified sustainable palm oil. In the same vein, PepsiCo expanded its commitment to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2020\/03\/pepsico-palm-oil-sustainable-indonesia-indofood-deforestation-sumatra\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">source only sustainable palm oil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to cover third-party suppliers instead of only direct suppliers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PepsiCo is also working to shift away from depending too much on sugary soft-drinks and announced that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-03-11\/pepsico-to-purchase-rockstar-energy-drinks-for-3-85-billion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it will buy Rockstar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an energy-drink brand, for USD 3.85 billion in an attempt to increase its presence in the fast-growing category. Interestingly, however, sales data from Arca Continental and Coca-Cola Femsa in Mexico show that the consumption of sweet beverages <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zafranet.com\/2020\/03\/sube-consumo-de-refrescos-en-mexico\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continued to increase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the 2014-19 period despite the introduction of a sugar tax in 2014.
