Truck drivers say they are struggling because the usual amenities they require, such as highway stops and restaurants, are closing down. In India, labourers are reportedly worried about their working conditions and refuse to work unless they are provided with proper equipment to protect them from the coronavirus. This labour shortage has forced most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brecorder.com\/2020\/03\/31\/585029\/raw-sugar-futures-ease\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian ports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to declare force majeure, while industries such as sugar mills are struggling to finish the harvest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The global sugar market has been particularly affected by the coronavirus outbreak as Brazilian mills, which can choose whether to make ethanol or sugar with their cane, are maximising sugar output given the collapse in fuel demand. Whereas a few months ago many analysts had forecast a global deficit of sugar, the switch in Brazil means the world is likely to see a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/economia.uol.com.br\/noticias\/reuters\/2020\/03\/27\/consultoria-green-pool-projeta-excedente-global-de-acucar-de-03-mi-t-em-202021.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sugar surplus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> instead, causing a collapse in sugar prices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The price of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/exame.abril.com.br\/economia\/importadores-de-cafe-acumulam-estoques-por-temor-de-efeitos-do-coronavirus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coffee has soared<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on the other hand, with coffee roasting nations looking to bring supply forward in anticipation of further logistic disruptions. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/lifestyle\/coronavirus-coffee-sales\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Packaged coffee sales<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the US surged 25% over the past month, according to Nielsen. Coffee producers in countries such as Brazil and Colombia are getting near-record high prices for their coffee in local currency. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/born2invest.com\/articles\/commodities-prices-slightly-upward-trend\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lack of containers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as labour shortages, are expected to exacerbate the situation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ivory Coast said it won\u2019t be selling any more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/ivory-coast-suspends-new-cocoa-bean-purchases-by-cargill-barry-callebaut-2020-03-31\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cocoa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to major exporters like Cargill and Barry Callebaut, which have already bought more than they had contracted. This is to ensure there is enough supply for smaller buyers amid a lower crop. The smaller, mainly domestic, exporters had earlier asked for support from the Coffee and Cocoa Council to help them compete as they cannot afford to pay the same level of premiums as bigger companies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cocoa importers in the US, meanwhile, have been asked by customs to fill in a questionnaire to identify <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kfgo.com\/2020\/03\/30\/exclusive-u-s-investigates-child-labor-in-ivory-coast-cocoa-supply-chains\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forced child labour<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in their supply chain from the Ivory Coast. However, the World Cocoa Foundation said there were only few instances of forced child labour in the country\u2019s cocoa industry, adding that potential restrictions, or even an outright ban, on cocoa imports would be counterproductive and end up hurting farmers who are already very poor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confectioneryproduction.com\/news\/28906\/barry-callebaut-moves-towards-its-sustainability-goals-in-ghana-and-ivory-coast\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barry Callebaut<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> argued that helping farmers out of poverty was key to ending deforestation. The group said it was on track with its cocoa sustainability targets, having mapped 220,000 farms it sources cocoa from in the Ivory Coast and Ghana, an area of 160,000sq km. It has also helped plant 750,000 native trees to shade cocoa trees and protect them from the weather. Similarly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newfoodmagazine.com\/news\/107963\/nestle-reports-significant-progress-in-cocoa-restoration-efforts\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nestle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said it had managed to map three-quarters of the 120,000 farms it sources cocoa from in the Ivory Coast and Ghana, with the remaining quarter expected to be mapped by October this year. It has also planted 560,000 shade trees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.candyindustry.com\/articles\/89050-olam-cocoa-continues-work-to-eradicate-child-labor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said it had spotted over 7,000 instances of child labour in its cocoa supply chain, following a partnership with the Fair Labor Association to monitor 7,000 suppliers in Cameroon. It said it had solved two-thirds of the issues identified by using revenues from the sustainable premium cocoa to build schools. On the other hand, Olam has been accused of failing to prevent deforestation in its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2020\/03\/palm-oil-giant-olam-under-scrutiny-again-over-gabon-plantations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">palm oil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> plantations in Gabon. Olam denied the allegations, which will be investigated by the Forest Stewardship Council.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmentalists are worried that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/mar\/27\/brazil-scales-back-environmental-enforcement-coronavirus-outbreak-deforestation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deforestation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could surge in Brazil\u2019s Amazon as Ibama, the environment protection agency, said it had to reduce enforcement personnel on the ground because of the coronavirus outbreak. Around 30% of Ibama\u2019s workforce is in the most vulnerable age group, it explained, adding that budget cuts had not made it possible to hire younger people.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the UK, the Global Resource Initiative Task Force is urging the government to make deforestation targets in the supply chain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chorleycitizen.co.uk\/news\/national\/18344472.legal-target-needed-cut-deforestation-uk-food-supply-chain---report\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">legally binding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by 2030. The taskforce, which has the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edie.net\/news\/5\/Business-giants-including-Tesco-urge-ministers-to-end-supply-chain-deforestation-by-2030\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">support of McDonald&#8217;s, Tesco and Cargill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, among others, also recommends compulsory due diligence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you know?
