This could have long-term implications on how we feed ourselves. Most dramatically, some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-52373888\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people are facing a heightened risk of famine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The UN\u2019s World Food Programme (WFP) warned in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfp.org\/publications\/2020-global-report-food-crises\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a new report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that &#8220;we could be facing multiple famines of biblical proportions within a short few months,&#8221; because of the virus. The head of the WFP remained optimistic, however, saying this could be avoided by acting quickly and wisely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The alarming number of Covid-19 cases in US meat packing plants is also highlighting what labour unions are calling <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2020\/04\/17\/poor-conditions-at-meatpacking-plants-have-long-put-workers-at-risk-the-pandemic-makes-it-much-worse\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-standing problems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the sector, like worker exploitation. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-52311877\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BBC piece<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> analysed the case of the huge Smithfield meat plant in South Dakota &#8211; responsible for 4-5% of the total pork production in the country &#8211; which was forced to close after 644 employees contracted the disease. Efforts by the USDA to stabilise the food supply only made things worse. It removed speed limits on a lot of meat plants, forcing employees to work closer together, heightening the contamination risk which could then force the whole plant to close.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Labour unions see a silver lining, however, as the whole country turns its attention to the previously ignored but essential role of the food worker. For one, companies are accelerating efforts to protect employees. A food union recently announced that JBS agreed to<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/2020\/04\/19\/ufcw-and-jbs-announce-increased-pay-and-enhanced-protective-equipment-for-meatpacking-workers-on-frontlines-of-coronavirus-pandemic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> increase wages and reinforce safety precautions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Nevertheless, some argue that companies are offering too little too late &#8211; around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-meat-cargill-ltd\/cargill-reduces-beef-production-at-alberta-plant-as-virus-spreads-idUSKCN21W2RT\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12 meat plants in North America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are reportedly closed or idled. The situation is similar in Canada where Cargill agreed to slow production to protect employees at an Alberta plant but only after dozens of employees caught the disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These meat packing plants are often located in Midwestern states where the quarantine orders are the weakest. Many Governors of the so-called Corn Belt have refused to issue stay-at-home orders but local officials warn that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/04\/15\/coronavirus-hot-spots-farm-belt-189272\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">infection numbers are starting to soar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Despite a growing concern, the head of the USDA reassured that the meat and dairy supply was so far not affected. He added that the agency will support the sector by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/morning-agriculture\/2020\/04\/16\/perdue-reassures-as-covid-19-wreaks-havoc-on-meatpacking-workforce-786912\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">buying and stocking products.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the most part, governments around the world are working hard to make sure the poorest are still able to buy enough food and medicine. However, the informal sector has also been stepping in to help. In Italy, well-known <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/apr\/10\/mafia-distributes-food-to-italys-struggling-residents\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mafia members<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been seen distributing food parcels, while armed narco-traffickers in Mexico were traveling across the country to supply the poorest households with food. Some recognised the daughter of El Chapo handing out packages advertising her company \u201cEl Chapo 701\u201d. In response, the Mexican President urged the groups to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-mexico-violence-gangs\/mexican-president-tells-gangs-to-stop-donating-food-end-crime-instead-idUSKBN22232C\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">focus on reducing violence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> instead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Croatia, the government is urging the young and unemployed to consider <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/agriculture-food\/short_news\/labour-minister-encourages-young-people-to-get-involved-in-farming\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">working in the agricultural sector<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help address a labour shortage. The crisis helped \u201cenhance\u201d the importance of the sector, a minister said. The Austrian agriculture minister, meanwhile, asked consumers to help support the livelihoods of local farmers by buying more goods <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/agriculture-food\/news\/market-measures-farm-to-fork-reschedule-milk-lakes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">produced in their regions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She also encouraged supermarkets to offer discounts on local products. In the same vein, the British Nature Friendly Farming Network (NFFN) urged people to buy more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.somersetcountygazette.co.uk\/farmer\/18384159.nffn-calls-people-buy-local-farmers-step-pandemic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">locally and sustainably produced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> goods, and to consider working or volunteering on a farm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changing consumer habits are helping <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2020\/04\/17\/business\/small-grocery-stores-rural-america-coronavirus\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rural grocery stores in the US<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which witnessed a surge in interest as people try to avoid crowded supermarkets. Nevertheless, grocers are worried that the trend will not last, as experts predict that online retailers will benefit the most. Online sales have been a lifesaver for many small coffee shops, although that might not be enough to stop many shops from closing. The Counter even wonders whether \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thecounter.org\/what-if-coffee-shops-starbucks-covid-19-independent-business-coronavirus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starbucks will be the last one standing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. Independent coffee operations remain hopeful, however, noting that the 1918 Spanish Flu was followed by the Roaring Twenties, a \u201ctransformative\u201d time for coffee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another sign that food is gaining in visibility is that Americans are using most of the USD 1,200 they are receiving from the government to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2020\/04\/14\/1200-relief-checks-have-begun-arriving-bank-accounts-people-are-mostly-spending-it-food\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">buy groceries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But shoppers are looking at food items differently in these times, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1837977\/covid-19-has-made-canned-foods-rice-and-vodka-better-groceries\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this Quartz survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 27,244 readers showed. Respondents now prioritise boxed wine and vodka over beer and whiskey, or spam over strawberries.
