The rumour comes just a week after Uber said it was closing its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gadgets.ndtv.com\/apps\/news\/uber-eats-shuts-down-in-in-eight-smaller-markets-2223072\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UberEats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> operations in 8 countries where it didn\u2019t think it could become a major player, although it said that its business in the US grew 54%, helping in part to offset an 80% fall in the ride side of the business. A Bloomberg analyst noted that most of the food delivery giants were unprofitable, however, while a merger of UberEats and Grubhub may not be allowed as it would represent a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/2020\/5\/12\/21255977\/uber-grubhub-acquisition-merger\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">55% share of the US market<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restaurants have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/2020\/5\/12\/21255977\/uber-grubhub-acquisition-merger\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complaining<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about some of these delivery companies, however, accusing them of listing without their consent or charging very high fees. In response, the Mayor of Chicago (where, incidentally, Grubhub is based) announced that, as of next week, third-party delivery services would have to be more<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.eater.com\/2020\/5\/12\/21256051\/chicago-grubhub-third-party-delivery-fee-commission-transparency-rules\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> transparent about their cost <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and break down what they charged in receipts to customers. Chicago would be the first city to do so. DoorDash and Grubhub both opposed the measures, saying it was \u201coverreaching regulation\u201d and would confuse customers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One industry which, apparently, has extensive food production and delivery networks is airlines. A New York NGO has been working with airline caterers to deliver meals to people in need in 11 cities in the US. The founders of Project Isaiah said they were able to tap into the nationwide network of kitchens and distribution <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2020\/05\/07\/working-with-airline-caterers-this-startup-nonprofit-has-already-delivered-over-a-million-meals\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that airlines use<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Meanwhile, companies that specialise in buying surplus stocks, such as Imperfect Foods, have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2020\/05\/07\/jetblue-airline-food-home-delivery\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selling surplus airline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> snacks. In Japan, an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.india.com\/sports\/coronavirus-crisis-olympic-medalist-becomes-food-delivery-rider-for-extra-cash-and-maintaining-fitness-4027809\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olympic athlete<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made the headlines by enrolling for a food delivery job. He said that, with the Tokyo Olympics delayed, this was a good way to make money while staying fit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restaurants in the UK are blaming a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/may\/13\/uk-takeaway-food-waste-rises-during-coronavirus-lockdown\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25% surge in food wastage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on \u201cunpredictable ordering patterns\u201d during the coronavirus lockdown. The research, done by the Sustainable Restaurant Association, also found that in 2019 close to 10% of all ordered food ended up in the bin in people\u2019s homes. One of the most wasted items, surprisingly, is chips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The US meat processing industry was described this week as \u201cthe most narrow <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/may\/11\/chaotic-and-crazy-meat-plants-around-the-world-struggle-with-virus-outbreaks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bottleneck in US agribusiness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d A small scale farmer told the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/2020\/5\/11\/21254684\/how-the-pandemic-exposed-the-cracks-in-our-industrial-meat-system\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eater\u2019s Digest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that most of the livestock has been bred for \u201cfeed conversion\u201d which means they have a low immune system and are not designed to outlive their slaughter date. The scale of the problem is such that the US is looking into financial assistance to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/animals-farmed\/2020\/may\/13\/animals-farmed-meat-plant-virus-outbreaks-chinas-cattle-imports-and-amazon-forest-fires\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">put down some 7 million pigs <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because of the closure of meat plants. What to do with the carcasses is also a major <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thecounter.org\/hog-farmers-cull-pigs-environmental-catastrophe-covid-19-coronavirus-slaughter\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">environmental headache<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But even if the industry wasn\u2019t operating at a reduced rate, most of the meat is usually shipped in boxes that are close to 1mt, which cannot be sold to supermarkets. And in any case, the quality of food destined for the industrial chain is often of lower quality than that sold in supermarkets. This is also why a lot of vegetables, which don\u2019t meet the higher specification for supermarkets, have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/04\/26\/food-banks-coronavirus-agriculture-usda-207215\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not been harvested<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In Florida, three-quarters of the lettuce crop has reportedly not been harvested, along with sweet corn and squash.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An analysis by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmprogress.com\/business\/meatpackers-eye-operational-changes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloomberg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that the main meatpackers will likely make some operational changes that will result in more expensive meat. Investment in automation is already happening, although it will be limited by the fact that the industry is a low-margin one. Similarly, more dairy producers are investing in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1802876\/lactose-free-milk-sales-are-on-the-rise\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> making lactose-free milk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as demand saw a 30% increase in March, growing faster than plant-based alternatives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A famous consultant to the livestock industry noted that \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/templegrandin\/2020\/05\/03\/temple-grandin-big-meat-supply-chains-are-fragile\/#3f6cf79650c3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big is not bad, it is fragile<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201c She expects that there could be some interest to shift to a more localised or distributed supply chain, even if it is more expensive, as it is less prone to disruptions. However, a study from Oxford University found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scienceline.org\/2020\/05\/why-eating-local-isnt-always-best-for-the-environment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transport only accounted for 10% of carbon emissions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the global food supply. That\u2019s because most of the food is transported by sea, and not by plane as many people believe.
