A US survey revealed that many <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thecounter.org\/covid-19-dan-barber-resourced-small-farmer-survey\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">small operations would not survive the year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Part of the issue is that the pandemic seems to have reversed the previous trend where consumers were moving away from processed food to focus on eating local and fresh products. An executive at a large food firm noted that \u201cpeople aren\u2019t cooking, they\u2019re reheating\u201d, as he highlighted that processed food has gotten much better both in terms of taste and health. The result is that the disease could open the door for large multinationals to take over smaller operations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right on cue, Nestle announced that it will invest USD 100 million to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-nestle-investment-china\/nestle-to-build-new-plant-based-food-facility-in-china-under-100-million-investment-plan-idUSKBN22W1X3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grow its presence in China<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The plan includes building its first plant-based meat factory on the continent, expanding a pet food plant and a biscuit factory. In Brazil, Bunge said it will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/imcopa-ma-bunge\/update-1-bunges-brazil-unit-signs-contract-to-acquire-two-soy-plants-from-imcopa-idUSL1N2D2198\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">purchase two soy processing plants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Imcopa for a combined USD 9.16 million. The move would cement Bunge as one of the largest soy processors as it currently operates 12 facilities in the country, compared to Cargill\u2019s eight plants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others are seizing on the crisis as an opportunity to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-05-20\/danone-adds-social-environment-goals-to-bylaws-amid-pandemic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highlight sustainability goals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Danone, for one, will add the commitment to produce healthy and environmentally-friendly food to the company bylaws. The key aspect to sustainability is transparency when it comes to gaining consumer trust, according to Cargill\u2019s latest <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seafoodsource.com\/news\/aquaculture\/consumers-crave-a-better-understanding-of-the-story-behind-the-food-cargill-survey-finds\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feed4Thought survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Global Salmon Initiative (GSI) has taken the idea to heart and published its Sustainability Report outlining the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.perishablenews.com\/seafood\/farmed-salmon-is-a-core-component-of-healthy-sustainable-diets\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">performance of salmon farming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Salmon farms have a lower carbon footprint and more efficient use of feed when compared to land-based operations, the report claims.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the price of food in US grocery stores saw its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcall.com\/coronavirus\/mc-nws-coronavirus-grocery-prices-skyrocket-cpi-statistics-show-20200513-voql4eeoznbhdhtxdpqcdvxwdq-story.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biggest monthly jump in 50 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in April with the outbreak of the coronavirus. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed a 2.6% overall price hike in retail food prices when compared to the previous month. The situation is similar in Latin America where <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-05-19\/protests-over-food-shortages-erupt-in-chile-amid-virus-lockdown\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rising food prices and shortages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> led to some violent protests. In Chile, the President argued that supply remained plentiful, although he pledged to accelerate the distribution of food packages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The extraordinary measures taken by the EU to alleviate the impact of the coronavirus are increasingly clashing with the bloc\u2019s long-term sustainability efforts. For example, countries like <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cgb-france.fr\/il-nous-faut-des-vraies-solutions-pour-lutter-contre-les-pucerons\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have relaxed rules on the use of pesticides, while a draft proposal by the European Commission outlined a plan to reduce the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-climate-change-eu-pesticides\/eu-to-halve-pesticides-by-2030-to-protect-bees-biodiversity-draft-idUSKBN22Q25N\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use of chemical pesticides by half<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by 2030. Similarly, the Agriculture Commissioner expressed his concern at the call from France and Poland asking citizens to buy local products instead of items imported from other EU nations. The idea could <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/morning-agriculture\/2020\/05\/18\/usda-food-boxes-start-flowing-direct-aid-on-deck-787676\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">threaten fair competition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the common market, he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Commissioner also expressed concern at the amount of direct aid offered by some governments. The EU recently increased the limits on state aid but he argued that this would give <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/agriculture-food\/news\/eu-agri-chief-warns-against-risks-of-state-aid-overuse-in-farming-sector\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wealthier countries an unfair advantage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Most of the direct aid so far has been offered by Germany and the Netherlands. A solution presented by Poland would be to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/agriculture-food\/news\/agriculture-commissioner-backs-polands-plan-to-hike-cap-spending\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> increase the CAP budget<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to make it more resilient in times of crisis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A key piece of legislation is due to be published this week with the release of a draft <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/green-deal\/148421\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farm to Fork (F2F) strategy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a central component of the European Green New Deal. The bioenergy policy will also see a major rewrite and will focus on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/biomass\/news\/eu-plans-sweeping-bioenergy-review-by-end-2020\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minimising the use of food and feed crops<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while reconsidering whether biomass feedstock is carbon neutral. In response, Bioenergy Europe said it was concerned about the decision to impose arbitrary restrictions that do not reflect the scientific consensus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the meantime, official data from the EU showed that supermarket <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/en\/web\/products-eurostat-news\/-\/DDN-20200507-2?inheritRedirect=true&amp;redirect=\/eurostat\/en\/news\/whats-new\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">food and beverage sales surged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in March when compared to February, most notably in Luxembourg, Ireland and Belgium where food sales were up 20%, 14% and 13% respectively. More dramatic was the surge in demand for Trappist Westvleteren 12 ale made by monks in Belgium. Their website crashed after being opened for just four hours because of what they called a \u201ctsunami of visitors\u201d.
