Consumers will have less money to spend and will look for cheaper products, the CEO\u00a0 forecast. The group launched a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.portada-online.com\/sales-leads\/coca-colas-new-social-campaign-ulta-beauty-duracell-budweiser\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#WeLoveThisPlace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> social media campaign in the US to encourage people to support their local restaurants. An analysis in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/investing\/2020\/05\/24\/where-will-coca-cola-be-in-1-year.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motley Fool <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">argued that Coca-Cola\u2019s fate is tightly intertwined with that of restaurants. Using data from a survey which showed that 80% of restaurateurs are worried they may have to close down, compared to a 38% restaurant closure rate in April, it warned this could translate into a 50% fall in Coke sales.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, the company is set to benefit from its new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vegconomist.com\/food-and-beverage\/coca-cola-slips-into-the-vegan-milk-category-under-the-name-simply-almond-milk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plant-based milk products<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called Simply Almond Milk which it just launched in North America. The US sales of plant-based milk grew by almost 15% in 2017-19, and even more in the lockdown period, according to GFI data.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nestle, too, expects a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketscreener.com\/NESTLE-S-A-9365334\/news\/Nestle-S-A-Pets-At-Home-sees-weaker-H1-as-stockpiling-demand-eases-30646643\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fall in sales<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the current quarter, after benefitting from panic-buying at the start of the lockdown. However, it reported a surge in the sale of pet food globally, which it attributed to more people adopting pets to cope with the lockdown but also because vets stayed open. And in the same vein as the Coke CEO, Nestle\u2019s India head forecast that consumers would &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newindianexpress.com\/business\/2020\/may\/20\/consumers-may-trade-downwards-as-pay-cuts-sink-in-says-nestle-india-chairman-suresh-narayanan-2145616.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trade downwards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; and buy cheaper products to cope with job losses and pay cuts. In Malaysia, Nestle and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/business\/business-news\/2020\/05\/24\/nestle-teams-up-with-starbucks-to-launch-premium-instant-coffee\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starbucks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released a premium instant coffee to continue to encourage consumers to consume the in-store coffee at home. Back in the US, meanwhile, Starbucks has reportedly sent a letter to all the landlords of its stores asking them to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/2020\/5\/14\/21258532\/starbucks-wants-one-year-rent-relief-for-coronavirus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">write-off one year of rent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help them cope with the current scenario.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A poll of small-scale farmers across the US showed that a third of them would go bankrupt if restaurants and farmers markets don\u2019t reopen by August. The government\u2019s USD 16 billion farm aid is not expected to make much of a difference because it is based on large-scale wholesale prices, which are much lower than the prices small farmers usually get. An indepth piece by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/food\/2020\/05\/trumps-latest-farm-bailout-is-great-if-youre-a-huge-corporate-farmer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mother Jones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that, for instance, the compensation price for asparagus was USD 0.38\/lb, compared to USD 5\/lb at a farmers market.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CEO of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20200519005669\/en\/ADM-Announces-Aggressive-New-Goals-Reduce-Water\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said the COVID-19 pandemic had made the need for sustainable business more apparent. As such, the group committed to reducing water intensity by 10% and reach a 90% landfill diversion rate by 2035, as well as reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 25%. Similarly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dairyreporter.com\/Article\/2020\/05\/21\/Danone-to-pioneer-Entreprise-a-Mission-model-as-CEO-takes-pay-cut\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> announced it would become an &#8220;entreprise \u00e0 mission\u201d (company with a mission). The framework was set up by the French government in 2019 and includes a novel governance system which checks on social and environmental goals. Danone would be the first publicly listed company to do so.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking at the waste side of things, Coke joined the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esquireme.com\/content\/46190-coca-cola-says-its-plastic-bottles-will-be-biodegradable-by-2023\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPaper Bottle Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d as part of its pledge to be plastic-free by 2023 by using environmentally friendly, biodegradable plastic from plants. It might also build a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/aseanplus\/aseanplus-news\/2020\/05\/24\/coca-cola-considers-building-indonesian-recycling-plant-to-slash-25000-tons-of-plastic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plastic recycling plant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Indonesia as the country committed to reducing plastic waste by 70% by 2025. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodbusinessnews.net\/articles\/16065-nestle-pilots-refillable-coffee-pet-food-dispensers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nestle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meanwhile, committed to only using recyclable and reusable packaging by 2025. It is looking into bulk delivery systems instead, combined with refill options to reduce packaging whilst ensuring food safety. It is currently testing such a system with Purina pet food and Nescafe coffee dispensers in a few shops in Switzerland.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its latest sustainability report, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.environmentalleader.com\/2020\/05\/cargill-traceable-cocoa-beans\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cargill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said it was now able to trace half of the cocoa beans in its direct supply chain from farm to factory. It has some <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/v\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">300 data points<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along the supply chain using GPS, digital data collection and mobile money, among other technologies. Technology is also helping Cargill trade faster. In Australia, the group used a trade finance platform, Bolero International Galileo, to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.finextra.com\/pressarticle\/82611\/cargill-australia-uses-bolero-galileo-to-speed-up-china-canola-oil-transaction\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transfer documents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> required for a canola oil vessel headed to China ahead of the Chinese holidays and despite coronavirus disruptions.
