Besides, the US reaction to China\u2019s new security policy in Hong Kong, along with the US President blaming China for the coronavirus pandemic, could potentially lead to the collapse of the Phase One trade deal. Some pointed to the Chinese purchase of US soybeans earlier this week, although market sources said this could just be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-trade-china-agriculture\/china-buys-u-s-soybeans-after-halt-to-u-s-purchases-ordered-sources-idUSKBN238264\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">motivated by the low price<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The United Arab Emirates, which currently relies on imports for 90% of its food supply, is intensifying efforts to produce more food locally. The country successfully <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-06-02\/rice-in-the-desert-pandemic-spurs-uae-to-grow-more-of-its-food\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">harvested rice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> grown using underwater irrigation and desalinated sea water, a method considered more sustainable than Saudi Arabia\u2019s use of groundwater and rotary sprinklers. In parallel, Abu Dhabi Ports Co launched a new shipping company, called Safeen Feeders, which will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-06-03\/new-shipping-line-boosts-uae-s-options-for-food-medical-imports\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strengthen food and medical imports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from India, Pakistan, the Persian Gulf and East Africa.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In contrast, Thailand is cementing<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-06-01\/thailand-s-farm-to-table-resilience-featured-in-food-export-jump\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its position as a major food exporter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A government official said she expected that the proportion of food and agricultural exports will keep growing &#8211; the weak economy and currency should keep supporting exports. Nonetheless, farmers are worried about a new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-thailand-chemicals\/thailands-chemical-pesticide-ban-troubles-farmers-industries-idUSKBN2382IC\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ban on paraquat and chlorpyrifos<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which was enforced as of June 1. Farmers often do not have alternatives and total food output could suffer as a result. A similar decision to ban glyphosate was reversed in November after some pressure from the US.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glyphosate was in the news this week as lawyers presented arguments in the appeal of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-bayer-glyphosate-lawsuit\/california-court-hears-appeal-of-289-million-verdict-against-bayer-in-first-roundup-cancer-trial-idUSKBN2392R6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California verdict against Bayer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the maker of the Roundup pesticide. Bayer\u2019s legal strategy reportedly revolved around fighting the three guilty verdicts to gain leverage and settle cases. The Californian court heard arguments that federal guidance comes before state laws, as Bayer highlighted that the Environmental Protection Agency does not classify glyphosate as cancerogenic. Regardless, legal experts predict that Bayer will need to spend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-05-25\/bayer-said-to-reach-deals-on-big-share-of-125-000-roundup-suits\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USD 10-12 billion to settle around 125,000 lawsuits.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although it started in a wet market, some experts are using the coronavirus pandemic to highlight the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2020\/05\/29\/industrial-meat-101-could-large-livestock-operations-cause-the-next-pandemic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inherent dangers of massive livestock farms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs), as they call for urgent institutional reforms. In Germany, the Green Party went as far as proposing a minimum price for meat, while a new law was passed banning meat plants from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.de\/20200520\/meat-production-and-workers-rights\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hiring foreign workers on short-term contracts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And in the Netherlands, Europe\u2019s biggest pig slaughterhouse managed to avoid disruptions by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/covid-19-makes-the-case-for-more-meatpacking-robots\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relying on robots<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to do most of the work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the meantime, global food producers continue to bet on the growth of plant-based meat. ADM and Marfrig Global Foods, the world\u2019s second-largest beef producer, created a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meatpoultry.com\/articles\/23198-adm-marfrig-partner-on-plant-based-venture\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new venture called PlantPlus Foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to market plant proteins in North and South America. The market for plant-based meat should <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-05-28\/old-school-food-firms-bet-on-faux-meat-demand-more-than-doubling\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than double in the next 5 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the firms estimated. Otherwise, Nestle will be forced to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodnavigator.com\/Article\/2020\/06\/02\/Nestle-loses-row-with-Impossible-Foods-over-Incredible-burger-name\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rebrand its plant burger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the EU after a Dutch court agreed with a claim by Impossible Foods that Nestle\u2019s Incredible Burger was too similar to the Impossible Burger. Nestle will rename its product Sensational Burger as a result, while it used the name Awesome Burger in the US after a court made a similar ruling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Competition is also growing in the coffee sector as large firms are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-05-29\/as-small-coffee-brands-falter-nestle-starbucks-set-to-fill-gap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rushing to fill in the gap<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> left by small operations which did not have the cash reserves to survive an extended lockdown. Nestle and Starbucks are seen as the two main contenders, but Coca-Cola joined the scene with its 2019 purchase of Costa Coffee, the second-largest coffee chain in the world. Earlier this week, Coca-Cola launched the first <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beveragedaily.com\/Article\/2020\/05\/27\/Coca-Cola-launches-new-range-of-at-home-Costa-Coffee-products\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at-home Costa Coffee products<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the EU. But small coffee operations might not all disappear, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-britain-amarcafe\/caffeine-calling-london-phone-boxes-serve-up-coffee-after-lockdown-idUSKBN2392VP\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as this couple from London discovered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
