On-duty officers have been asked out of a Starbucks in Arizona while employees staged a walkout in a Condado Tacos in Ohio after refusing to serve patrol officers during protests. This piece in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/21281690\/restaurants-refusing-service-to-police-cops-protest\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eater<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explains that this is in part because a majority of the food industry is made of minority workers. However, companies, too, are taking a stand. In Georgia, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gpbnews.org\/post\/coca-cola-home-depot-delta-among-60-calling-hate-crimes-law-pass\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coca-Cola<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was one of 60 signatories to a letter urging the state to pass hate crime laws. And Unilever\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wicz.com\/story\/42204962\/why-ben-jerrys-statement-on-white-supremacy-is-so-extraordinary\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ben &amp; Jerry&#8217;s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> issued a statement with a call to investigate the consequences of discrimination. Last September, it had launched a new ice cream called Justice ReMix&#8217;d in support of a reform to the criminal justice reform.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.campaignlive.com\/article\/unilever-brands-avoid-opportunistic-behaviour-during-tragedy\/1685108\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unilever<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s head of marketing said consumers expect brands to have an opinion, explaining that &#8220;Brands need to move at the speed of culture and culture is moving faster than ever.&#8221; She warned, however, that while brands had an important role to play, they should make sure that they don\u2019t come across as opportunistic which would result in a backlash, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prweek.com\/article\/1684979\/loreal-faces-backlash-black-lives-matter-post\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L\u2019Oreal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discovered last week.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cargill just announced it would <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/internationalleathermaker.com\/news\/fullstory.php\/aid\/8521\/Cargill_no_longer_to_report_quarterly_results.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no longer release quarterly reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reduce costs but also to keep the focus on long term goals. In its sustainability report, it said it was on schedule to meet the goals in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confectioneryproduction.com\/news\/29882\/cargills-target-to-eliminate-deforestation-from-palm-oil-supplies-remain-on-track\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">palm oil sector,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> notably to eliminate deforestation from its third-party supply chain &#8211; which represents 95% of its supply &#8211; by the end of the year. It added, however, that getting indirect suppliers to fall under the \u201cNo Deforestation, No Peat and No Exploitation\u201d compliance was an issue and may require a different approach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cargill said it had reduced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodbusinessnews.net\/articles\/16169-cargill-ahead-on-sustainability-initiatives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CO2 emissions in ocean transportation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by 800,000mt in the last two years as part of a commitment to reduce emissions in its supply chain by 30% by 2030. It is also working on a standard greenhouse gas emissions reporting process and has partnered with technology experts to find solutions for its beef supply chain as part of its BeefUp Sustainability initiative.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group launched a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketscreener.com\/news\/Cargill-Wheat-and-barley-malt-syrup-added-to-Cargill-s-label-friendly-sweetener-options-for-Europe--30741131\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new sweetener<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made from wheat and barley malt syrup, called SweetPure. A company official said the sweetener was \u201clabel-friendly,\u201d explaining that consumers want to know everything that goes into their food. This comes at a time when the US\u2019 Sugar Association petitioned the FDA to force manufacturers to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fooddive.com\/news\/sugar-association-asks-fda-to-overhaul-sweetener-labeling-rules\/579151\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clearly identify the use of alternative sweeteners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in their products. The FDA recently mandated that products list the amount of added sugar, so manufacturers are often exchanging sugar for other sweeteners that do not have to be labelled as such. Another Cargill official added that \u201cThe call for radical transparency is increasing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/mergers-and-antitrust\/cargill-jbs-top-meatpackers-accused-of-driving-up-beef-prices\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">class action lawsuit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Minnesota is taking Cargill, JBS USA, National Beef Packing and Tyson Foods &#8211; which control 80% of the meat industry &#8211; to court accusing them of fixing the price of meat since 2015 and deliberately running plants at below capacity to create a livestock surplus. This is coming out of an investigation started last month by 11 Midwestern states looking into explaining the rally in retail meat prices during the coronavirus outbreak while the price for livestock collapsed. The head <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Business\/wireStory\/pilgrims-pride-ceo-indicted-chicken-price-fixing-71049111\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JBS subsidiary Pilgrim\u2019s Pride<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was already charged with fixing chicken prices by the Justice Department last week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Tyson Foods\u2019 2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomasnet.com\/insights\/tyson-foods-releases-2019-sustainability-report-states-progress-on-navigating-covid-19\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sustainability Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it noted that the group was the country\u2019s largest meat producer to go into plant-based protein via its Raised &amp; Rooted line. However, its meat production throughput is picking up again with the easing of lockdown measures. It expects that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wlfi.com\/content\/news\/Tyson-Foods-expects-meat-products-to-remain-in-high-demand--571025731.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">demand for meat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would continue to be strong even if people eat more at home. Besides, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nutritionaloutlook.com\/trends-business\/weight-gain-mental-wellbeing-cited-major-concerns-consumers-during-covid-19-pandemic-says-market\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by FMCG Gurus in 18 countries found that people were increasingly worried about the weight they gained from increased snacking during lockdown. It suggested there would be a growing demand for healthy snacks, as people will likely continue to snack amid the stress of a second wave of the coronavirus but will be more health conscious about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenbiz.com\/article\/how-demand-food-delivery-apps-could-encourage-low-carbon-food\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yale study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looking at the impact of posters showing the carbon emissions of dishes in dining halls showed that two-thirds of students took this information into account when making their choice. Project Drawdown wants to get food delivery apps to join the initiative, arguing that people were likely to choose more sustainable dishes if they had the information at hand. The restaurant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adweek.com\/brand-marketing\/just-salad-to-become-the-first-restaurant-to-add-carbon-labeling-to-its-menu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just Salad<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has already added the estimated emissions next to each of its dishes in the menu. Those who come in can thus find out that a salad with a yogurt dressing has a heavier carbon footprint than a salad with chicken. In Europe, meanwhile, Danone\u2019s water brand <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodbev.com\/news\/danones-volvic-water-brand-achieves-carbon-neutrality-and-b-corp-certification\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volvic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been certified as carbon neutral by the Carbon Trust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketscreener.com\/NESTLE-S-A-9365334\/news\/Nestle-S-A-Nestle-joins-the-Race-to-Zero-supporting-the-acceleration-of-a-healthy-and-resilient-30726563\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nestle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> joined the Race to Zero campaign which commits to net-zero emissions by 2050. The group\u2019s head of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.warc.com\/newsandopinion\/news\/how-nestle-usa-manages-digital-innovation\/43688\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digital innovation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and transformation in the US said she was putting together a common, single agenda to streamline and strategise the testing and adoption of new technologies across the group.
