The disease is now spreading in Brazil where Raizen, one of the world\u2019s largest sugar producers, reported that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/g1.globo.com\/sp\/bauru-marilia\/noticia\/2020\/06\/15\/usina-testa-funcionarios-em-massa-e-15-dao-positivo-para-covid-19-em-bocaina.ghtml\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15 workers at a Sao Paulo plant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had tested positive for COVID-19. The meat sector, with its densely packed processing lines, remains one of the most vulnerable and a court forced JBS SA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/health-coronavirus-brazil-jbs\/brazil-court-orders-jbs-meat-plant-closed-for-covid-19-testing-idUSL1N2DP28S\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to close a meat plant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Rio Grande do Sul for two weeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some groups have jumped on the opportunity to highlight issues in our current food system and call for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairr.org\/article\/industry-infected\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a dramatic rethink<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the status quo. In response, a coalition of industry members insisted that livestock and modern agriculture were in no way responsible for the outbreak, which originated in wildlife. They asked the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/agriculture-food\/news\/authorities-urged-to-support-struggling-meat-sector-post-coronavirus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EU to keep supporting the meat sector<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and insisted on its high safety and welfare standards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the US, meat plants are struggling to maintain a positive image as many criticised a decision by Tyson Food to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/coronavirus\/sns-bb-tyson-reinstates-penalizing-absentee-workers-20200604-lgur3lavvzbndfcvhmvpp2je2y-story.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reinstate a policy on absent workers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which centres around \u201cpunitive effect for missing work due to illness.\u201d Tyson has also taken a central role in the government\u2019s price-fixing investigation as the firm confirmed that it was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/tyson-foods-cooperating-in-u-s-probe-of-chicken-price-fixing-11591819260\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cooperating with the Justice Department<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By becoming one of the first parties to admit to misconduct and collaborate with authorities which will now go after other firms, Tyson will be offered leniency, confidentiality and possible financial benefits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The impact of the pandemic on other food sectors has been more discreet but not always less significant. In Florida\u2019s poor Immokalee area, a doctor revealed that half of the people he tested had been infected, making him think the area had \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thecounter.org\/immokalee-florida-farmworkers-covid-19-cases-coronavirus-testing-contact-tracing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of the highest rates of coronavirus infection globally.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d Some 25,000 farm workers live in Immokalee, mostly to harvest the tomato crop, but many are undocumented and officials have not made the area a priority.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food producers who rely on foreign demand are also particularly vulnerable, like West Africa\u2019s cashew nut growers. The region is responsible for 55% of world production but very little is consumed locally. Most of the crop is usually processed in Asia and Olam &#8211; the largest player in the market &#8211; commented that prices should remain low for a while as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-africa-cashew\/coronavirus-slams-west-africas-cashew-market-some-crops-left-to-rot-idUSKBN23J15R\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pandemic disrupted cross border trade<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In a demonstration of how global the food supply chain is, an African exporter noted that the collapse in cashew prices could be linked to the mass cancellation of weddings in India.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How the world trades food could also be impacted by the coronavirus as the CME Group announced that its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-cme\/coronavirus-threatens-chicagos-last-remaining-trading-pits-idUSKBN23J2T3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grain option pits will remain closed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> until the situation in Chicago and Illinois significantly improves, with the introduction of a vaccine or a treatment. A broker said she was struggling after losing the advantage of being on the floor, while Futures International suggested this could mark \u201cthe end of a 180-year era.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Countries like Singapore are realising the key role international trade needs to play to feed people. The country unveiled a plan to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-06-15\/saudi-shrimps-and-polish-eggs-on-menu-as-singapore-widens-supply\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diversify its trade partners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and has been approving more countries for food imports, bringing the total to 170 countries. A plan was also launched to produce 30% of food needs locally by 2030, compared to 10% currently. The situation is going in the opposite direction in Venezuela which is now \u201con the verge of famine\u201d according to the International Crisis Group. Farmers have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-06-11\/venezuela-on-brink-of-famine-with-fuel-too-scarce-to-sow-crops\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not been able to sow crops because of a fuel shortage.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Things could be changing over at Nestle as the CEO mentioned a potential plan to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2020\/06\/11\/2047073\/0\/en\/Nestl%C3%A9-sharpens-water-focus-on-international-premium-mineral-and-functional-brands-while-exploring-strategic-options-for-parts-of-North-American-business.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sell the Nestle Waters North America unit <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in order to refocus on premium international brands like Perrier, S Pellegrino and Acqua Panna. The firm also announced the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/yolarobert1\/2020\/06\/11\/nestl-health-science-acquires-vital-proteins\/#5c122962f228\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">purchase of a majority stake in Vital Proteins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the US\u2019 largest producer of collagen-based supplements, vitamins and food and beverage products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADM, Bunge, Cargill, COFCO, Glencore Agriculture, and Louis Dreyfus joined forces under a new partnership program with Solidaridad Brazil which will focus on improving the sustainability of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodnavigator.com\/Article\/2020\/06\/15\/ADM-LDC-and-Cargill-among-big-six-to-kickstart-new-collaboration-with-soy-farmers-in-Brazil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soy production in the Cerrado<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The deforestation rate in the area is currently twice as high as in the Amazon. In Iowa, Cargill is hoping to expand a program that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenbiz.com\/article\/inside-cargills-experiment-pay-farmers-carbon-sequestration\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paid soy farmers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for their efforts to sequester carbon dioxide and improve water quality.
