The WTO director explained that governments were faster to intervene than during the 2008 crisis, notably by encouraging consumer spending. He is worried, however, that a tendency towards protectionism, combined with a possible second wave of the virus, could slow the recovery in global trade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cargill\u2019s CEO expressed concerns after Brazilian government officials <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/in.reuters.com\/article\/us-cargill-brazil\/cargill-worried-brazil-government-insulting-top-trade-partner-china-idINKBN23O2IB\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mocked and criticised China<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. China has bought more Brazilian soybean than expected this year, he explained, saying it was risky to upset buyers. The US administration, meanwhile, continues to send<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-trade-china-analysis\/trump-threat-to-decouple-us-and-china-hits-trade-investment-reality-idUSKBN23U2WU\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conflicting messages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the state of its trade deal with China. Some officials were heard saying that the deal was over, something which was denied later on. In any case, analysts say that we will only really know in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dtnpf.com\/agriculture\/web\/ag\/news\/business-inputs\/article\/2020\/06\/19\/chinese-purchases-likely-pick-steam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">last quarter of the year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when China will buy the bulk of US goods and after the US elections.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both the US and Brazil have complained to the WTO about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.udop.com.br\/noticia\/2020\/06\/22\/eua-e-brasil-criticam-veto-da-tailandia-a-pesticida-veem-impacto-em-exportacoes.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thailand\u2019s intention to ban paraquat pesticide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and chlorpyrifos insecticide, including in imported food. If the proposal goes ahead, Thailand would have one of the strictest policies around, as others such as the EU and China still allow some residue in imports despite having banned these chemicals. Thailand is a major market for wheat and soy imports from the US and Brazil, both of which would be significantly impacted as a result. Farmers in Thailand aren\u2019t happy about this either, as they argue that the alternatives are much worse for the environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food sustainability is a major concern for the world\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/06\/22\/one-mission-shared-by-nearly-every-company-on-cnbcs-2020-disruptor-50.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most \u201cdisruptive\u201d companies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to a list by CNBC aggregating 50 companies that attracted a combined USD 74 billion in venture capital. One of the companies listed is Apeel, which gained attention for attracting funding from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/06\/18\/oprah-and-katy-perry-invest-in-apeel-to-solve-the-us-food-waste-crisis.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">celebrities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is focusing on food waste, blamed for 8% of the world\u2019s greenhouse gas emissions. The company created an edible film that can be applied on fruits and vegetables to double their life span without refrigeration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another company in the CNBC list is the plant-based meat company <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/06\/23\/impossible-foods-business-booms-as-demand-for-plant-based-meat-grows.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impossible Foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> whose reach is expected to grow significantly with Starbucks launching an Impossible Breakfast Sandwich across the US. Impossible Foods is working to be viewed as \u201cbetter meat\u201d and not an alternative product, the CEO explained. He said that 90% of their consumers are meat eaters and that the coronavirus-linked meat shortages helped push consumers to their products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.delimarketnews.com\/well-paired\/danone-north-america-utilizes-artificial-intelligence-platform-find-untapped-product-nutrients-and-benefits-Takoua-Debeche-Sofia-Elizondo\/jordan-okumura\/mon-06222020-0847\/9927\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> North America is taking it one step further and looking at how to enhance its range of plant-based food and drinks with health properties. It has tied up with Brightseed to use artificial intelligence to \u201canalyse plants at the molecular level in order to understand the specific roles that nutrients play in the proper functioning of our bodies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technological advances are also key in the meat sector where <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalmeatnews.com\/Article\/2020\/06\/18\/ADM-sees-growing-demand-for-spicy-meat-flavors-chili-pepper-smokey-chipotle\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> noted that spicy flavours are becoming increasingly popular among meat eaters. One of the group\u2019s food scientists noted that \u201cThe consumer palate for spice is also becoming much more nuanced with increasing desire for specific pepper varieties and hyper-local regional spices.\u201d The group is working on developing the right ingredients for marinades to capture all the flavours as well as physical sensations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cargill launched fully <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meatpoultry.com\/articles\/23303-cargill-extends-blockchain-benefits-to-china\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">traceable chicken in China<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> using blockchain technology. Consumers can scan the QR code to see which farm it came from. \u201cThis is chicken 2.0,\u201d Cargill said. Otherwise, the group is investing EUR 3.5 million to produce more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dairyfoods.com\/articles\/94413-cargill-further-invests-in-its-belgian-gourmet-chocolate-operation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gourmet chocolate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Belgium.
