An investigation by The Guardian and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism found that the banks had invested some USD 2.6 billion in large-scale livestock and dairy companies over the last decade. At the same time, the World Bank was involved in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cgspace.cgiar.org\/bitstream\/handle\/10568\/108489\/Actions%20to%20Transform%20Food%20Systems%20Under%20Climate%20Change.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new multisectoral report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released last week recommending reducing beef and dairy consumption which account for 41% and 20% respectively of total agricultural emissions. The banks <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/jul\/02\/revealed-development-banks-funding-industrial-livestock-farms-around-the-world\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defended themselves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, saying that the investments were to improve food security in poorer countries. Analysts, however, argued that a big part of the investments were made in rich countries, saying this was \u201cnot [&#8230;]\u00a0 justifiable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The apparent conflict between food security and climate change is exemplified in Indonesia where the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agriculture.com\/markets\/newswire\/indonesias-plan-for-giant-farm-kindles-ecological-chaos-concern\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">government announced a plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to set up a 164,000ha agricultural estate in Borneo to ensure sufficient domestic food supply. The targeted area would require further land clearing, environmentalists warned, adding that the crops the government wants to grow, such as rice, are unsuited for the dry area and could lead to fires.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To accommodate these increasingly complex scenarios, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sightmagazine.com.au\/news\/16322-rainforest-alliance-aims-to-help-ethical-growers-get-climate-smart\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rainforest Alliance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> announced it was changing its certification system. The NGO said that certification was facing \u201cmuch bigger challenges\u201d because climate change was worsening social inequalities. The new certification will require its members to have a more proactive role in identifying and controlling their supply chain, in exchange for a mandatory premium.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food corporations, meanwhile, are looking at technology to help accelerate the process. Nestle joined <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodnavigator-asia.com\/Article\/2020\/07\/06\/China-Food-Tech-Hub-adds-Nestle-Ajinomoto-and-Barilla-s-Blu1877-to-15-member-food-innovation-consortium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The China Food Tech Hub<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a consortium of 15 members, including Mars, Coca-Cola and Ferrero, designed to accelerate innovation in food by putting together multinational companies with startups. The areas of interest include plant-based protein and cell culture as consumers are increasingly concerned with their health, an official from the Tech Hub said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmo.com.au\/article\/681099\/unilever-partners-alibaba-cloud-marketing-intelligence\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unilever has tied up with Alibaba<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to use the Chinese company\u2019s artificial intelligence and data on consumer behaviour for its digital marketing. Unilever explained that consumers\u2019 buying patterns are changing very fast, adding that this was part of an intention to \u201creduce marketing waste.\u201d This also comes at a time when Unilever joined several other companies, including Coca-Cola and Starbucks, in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/live-updates-protests-for-racial-justice\/2020\/06\/29\/884881853\/facebook-boycott-grows-ford-joins-coca-cola-starbucks-and-other-brands\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">boycotting Facebook advertising<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the way it\u2019s been handling hate speech. Also in China, Walmart tied up with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.delimarketnews.com\/behind-counter\/walmart-china-partners-varcode-enhance-food-safety-Joseph-Battoe\/kayla-webb\/mon-06292020-0841\/9959\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blockchain group Varcode<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whose technology helps identify food that has gone bad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cargill, meanwhile, tied up with Burger King and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drovers.com\/article\/burger-king-cargill-and-wwf-launch-grassland-restoration-project\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grasslands restoration program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The idea is to reseed some 8,000acres of marginal cropland in Montana and South Dakota in the US, transforming the areas into diverse grasslands with the beef\u2019s grazing as part of the ecosystem. Cargill also announced it had managed to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/cargill-mapping-project-in-brazil-meant-to-help-control-deforestation\/571617022\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">completely trace its Brazilian soybeans supply chain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with several other countries to follow through by the end of the year. The group\u2019s GPS data points enable it to identify the land of origin of the soybean it purchases, thereby ensuring it comes from land that was not recently deforested. An NGO complained, however, that \u201crecent\u201d was a relative term. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.canaonline.com.br\/conteudo\/cofco-international-lanca-seu-terceiro-relatorio-anual-de-sustentabilidade.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COFCO International<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meanwhile, said it was planning for its soybean supply chain to be fully traceable by 2023.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the EU, farmers are asking the Commission to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/agriculture-food\/news\/eu-farmers-unlock-potential-of-agricultural-drones-or-risk-falling-behind\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ease rules on agriculture drones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They argue that the drone\u2019s precision technology will help meet the bloc\u2019s Farm to Fork strategy, which involves halving the use of pesticides. DroneDeploy, which is based in the US where the use of commercial drones has been allowed since the end of 2016, argues that the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmprogress.com\/technology\/drones-use-ag-soaring\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> data generated from drones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also very valuable, helping farmers make better decisions with regards to their crops.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Brazil\u2019s Mato Grosso, for instance, UISA and Vivo have tied up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/revistagloborural.globo.com\/Noticias\/Agricultura\/Cana\/noticia\/2020\/07\/parceria-entre-uisa-e-vivo-levara-internet-conectividade-e-big-data-90-mil-hectares-no-mt.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cover some 90,000ha of sugarcane area with Internet <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connection by setting up 4G towers. The system will facilitate the control of self driven technologies as well as streamline data collection, which was previously done offline. A company official explained that this would improve the efficiency of both machines and people, thereby reducing cost. Similarly, a trial on a sugarcane farm in South Africa\u2019s KwaZulu-Natal showed that using drones instead of helicopters to apply ripener, as is traditionally the case, led to a 1% <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/futureiot.tech\/crop-spraying-drone-brings-new-life-to-sugarcane-farm\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase in sugar recovery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which could translate into significantly higher revenues for farmers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last but not least, you will probably have noticed how polarising the debate about whether to wear or mask or not has become.
