Nestle\u2019s team in Switzerland even managed to help set up a new production line at a Thai factory using the technology which, as a result, was completed ahead of schedule. A company official forecast that \u201cGoing forward, remote assistance will become a new way of working\u201d as it will reduce traveling, and therefore lower costs and CO2 emissions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another challenge for food and beverage companies has been adapting to online sales. For one, Coca-Cola is investing to become more visible and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thespoon.tech\/coca-cola-adapts-digital-marketing-to-our-new-pandemic-normal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more attractive for online shoppers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including making images that are optimised for screens as well as better content, videos and descriptions. The idea is to have a product that is just as appealing online as it was designed to be in supermarket aisles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In China, Danone is following Nestle\u2019s strategy and is focusing on importing premium water brands like Evian and Volvic. Nestle also launched a new sugar and sweetener-free flavoured water <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cspdailynews.com\/beverages\/nestle-pure-life-has-new-water-children\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bottle range targeting children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.just-drinks.com\/news\/nestle-unveils-coffee-bean-based-bottled-water-plantwater-by-buxton_id131461.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coffee bean based bottled water<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Plant+Water by Buxton line is banking on the plant-based diet trend, an official said. As part of the same strategy, Nestle is launching the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livekindly.co\/nestle-condensed-vegan-oat-milk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">world\u2019s first plant-based condensed milk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from oat and rice flour. It will come out in September in the UK. Nestle also tied up with Starbucks to release <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vegconomist.com\/products-and-launches\/starbucks-launches-line-of-non-dairy-creamers-with-nestle-in-the-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plant-based creamers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from almond and oat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Going back to the topic of water, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenbiz.com\/article\/how-cargills-new-science-based-water-targets-go-flow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cargill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has given more details on its new sustainability water targets. It plans to restore 600 billion L of water in priority watersheds &#8211; more than twice the amount of water the company uses across operations. It also plans to reduce 5,500mt of water pollutants &#8211; all of that by the end of 2030 and across its supply chain. The United Nations said this was the biggest water related sustainability target for a single company, especially as it does not only apply to its direct operations but also to its suppliers. Cargill explained that getting the right data was relatively easy thanks to its tie up with the World Resources Institute (WRI) but getting farmers to make the changes was a bigger challenge. To get other stakeholders to join the effort, Cargill and the WRI have worked on a Water Management Toolkit and made it publicly available.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governments around the world seem to be caught between a rock and a hard place managing the effect of the coronavirus. In the UK, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confectionerynews.com\/Article\/2020\/07\/27\/British-MPs-urge-Nestle-to-rethink-dropping-Fairtrade-cocoa-for-its-KitKat-bars\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">government has asked Nestle\u2019s KitKat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to rethink its decision to switch to buying Rainforest Alliance cocoa instead of Fairtrade cocoa. The Members of Parliament (MPs) said that poor coca farmers would be affected at a time when they are already struggling because of the coronavirus. The MPs said the move could affect consumer confidence in KitKat. They criticised the fact that farmers have agency over only one third of the Rainforest Alliance premium, compared to the full premium with Fairtrade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UK government is being much more aggressive in its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingweek.com\/government-junk-food-ad-ban-coronavirus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fight against rising obesity rates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which it called a \u201ca time bomb.\u201d Backed by health data showing that 8% of those critically ill from the coronavirus were obese, compared to less than 3% for the general population, the government is banning the advertisement of junk food on television and online before 9pm. It is also banning \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bolnews.com\/health\/2020\/07\/uk-bans-buy-one-get-one-free-deals-on-food-to-tackle-obesity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buy one get one free\u2019 discounts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on products that are high in fat, sugar and salt, and these products won\u2019t be allowed at checkout counters any more. Besides, big restaurants will have to display calories on their menus. Other measures that the government is looking at include completely banning online junk food advertising and adding calories counts on alcoholic drinks, among other measures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/junk-food-whately-bogof-tv-ad-ban_uk_5f1ea2fcc5b6945e6e3d0d00?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvLnVrLw&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAADkr6_E8xGUv2eO_5X13voiRP_JeStO95O0_cR24LhRzkVUvR0zj5-I0qSvRyW1lp9BB4c-smxamDW50Tik77-EgjjwCLpHAGsLPHTYsObHJW_VRuWJ8Y_fEODZC3b6Uv3Ue-do3oBGFBWHZALcZqn5C6_1dVkdrtGnBGUkdOTBr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Critics say<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the food, advertising and TV industry will be significantly affected. They also pointed out that the new measures are in direct contradiction with the government\u2019s \u2018Eat Out to Help Out\u2019 promotion designed to stimulate the economy. The Advertising Association argued that junk food ads had already dropped by 70% over the last 15 years without any impact on obesity rates. Government officials, on the other hand, said that the sugar levy had been successful at forcing beverage companies to reformulate, adding that the new rules could have a similar effect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, analysts say that the coronavirus pandemic is hitting Mexico particularly hard because of the high incidence of obesity, diabetes and hypertension. While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wolfstreet.com\/2020\/07\/26\/coca-cola-confronted-by-big-problem-in-its-second-largest-market-for-once-political-connections-failed-oct-1-is-the-date\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coca-Cola<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> noted a 28% global drop in sales during the second quarter due to the coronavirus and lockdown measures, sales in Mexico only dropped by 5% as people drank just as much but inside the home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Minister of Economy said Mexico\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.efe.com\/efe\/america\/mexico\/mexico-choca-con-la-industria-de-alimentos-procesados-en-medio-pandemia\/50000545-4305281\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new labeling rules<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to highlight food and drinks products that have sugar, salt or fat content above a certain threshold will be rolled out as planned on October 1. He added that the coronavirus made <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eleconomista.com.mx\/empresas\/Covid-19-no-es-pretexto-para-aplazar-nuevas-reglas-de-etiquetado-frontal-SE-20200727-0012.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this policy a priority<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Mexico\u2019s per capita sugar consumption decreased by 36% in the past 25 years, while obesity and diabetes cases have been rising, it highlighted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, however, the coronavirus pandemic is expected to cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2020-07-obesity-covid-pandemic.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a surge in obesity rates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A study by the University of Alberta found that stress, especially financial stress, enhances people\u2019s urge to eat comfort food as the body, under stress, looks for high-calorie foods. To make things worse, many beverage companies, including alcoholic beverage makers, are facing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcpo.com\/money\/consumer\/dont-waste-your-money\/now-some-coca-cola-products-are-in-short-supply\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shortage of aluminium cans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as producers have been adapting to the in-home consumption market and using cans instead of kegs.
