The US, Russia and parts of the EU are facing extremely dry weather, while Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia have seen crops destroyed by storms and floods. The situation is even more complex when you factor in the sharp drop in the commercial flights which usually collect weather data. Meteorologists warn that they are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thecounter.org\/sugar-beets-harvest-weather-forecast-covid-19-flooding\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">struggling to make weather forecasts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a result.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, China is maintaining its buying spree. The country is expected to issue <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/china-corn-imports\/exclusive-china-likely-to-issue-more-corn-import-quotas-buy-millions-of-tonnes-of-crops-sources-idUSL4N2HD29F\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">additional corn import quotas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to replenish reserves and meet feed demand for the growing hog population, according to sources who said COFCO was already benefiting from an additional quota. The surge in Chinese demand is also helping other trade houses like the US-based Scoular. The 128-year-old group has reported a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-10-23\/china-loading-up-on-sorghum-gives-century-old-trader-a-boost\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spike in sorghum shipments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since the Phase One trade deal was signed in February. And ADM sold the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brownfieldagnews.com\/news\/first-commercial-shipment-of-rice-unloaded-in-china\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first shipment of US rice to China<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The California-grown rice was unloaded in China this week and marks the culmination of a decade of regulatory and political work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The food sector is in a much better place to deal with further coronavirus waves as it has set up systems to shift the food usually delivered to restaurants and caterers to retail stores. Besides, the head of ADM highlighted that being a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2020\/10\/26\/adm-juan-luciano-covid-19-impact-global-food-supply-chain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">global company provided clear advantages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to deal with a worldwide pandemic. Highlighting ADM\u2019s 118-year history, he mentioned: \u201cThat\u2019s what our company does: it adjusts constantly\u201d. Health experts are not so confident about the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thefern.org\/2020\/10\/could-the-food-system-face-a-new-covid-19-wave-ahead\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meat packing sector in the US<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, despite claims by JBS and Perdue Farms that they are prepared for further outbreaks. The major risk factor remains the speed of processing lines, while most plants are still running at the high rates authorised by an emergency decree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the first wave of stockpiling was categorised by a focus on comfort food and trusted brands, Nestle noted that consumers were now <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/pandemic-era-shoppers-splurge-on-vitamins-boosting-nestle-sales-11603275491\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">focusing on healthier purchases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The firm\u2019s health-science unit reported better than expected sales thanks to a growth in demand for vitamins, minerals and supplements. Unilever <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodnavigator.com\/Article\/2020\/10\/22\/Nestle-and-Unilever-reveal-shift-in-appetites-towards-trusted-brands\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported a similar trend<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and has been working on making some of its products healthier. To be sure, people are still buying comfort food and Unilever revealed that sales of at-home ice cream had fully offset the drop in out-of-home sales.\u200b<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not to be outdone, ADM\u2019s health department said it would increase the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nutraingredients.com\/Article\/2020\/10\/22\/ADM-expands-probiotics-production-with-Spain-facility\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">production of probiotics five-fold<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> thanks in part to the expansion of a factory in Valencia, Spain. Bayer, meanwhile, signed a USD 4 billion deal to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSKBN27B0PA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">buy Asklepios BioPharmaceutical<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The gene therapy firm is looking to use a harmless virus to deliver \u201cgenetic repair kits\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further out in the field of future food science, the debate is growing on whether lab-grown meat will ever be able to compete with traditional meat or its more direct rival, plant-based meat. Sceptics highlight that cost and perception will remain the main challenges for widespread adoption. Nonetheless, some firms are reportedly<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/is-cell-based-meat-the-next-big-thing-here-are-5-companies-leading-the-revolution-2020-10-06\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> making lab-grown beef patties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for just EUR 9, compared to the EUR 250,000 it took for the first experiment in 2013. The sharp drop in cost is similar, or even faster, than the scaling of the Internet and other digital technologies. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rshigeta.medium.com\/lab-grown-meat-is-scaling-like-the-internet-540893cbaf57\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggested that Moore\u2019s Law could be a good way to predict the future of the sector.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The head of Impossible Foods certainly has a strong opinion on the subject as he argued that cultured meat is \u201cnever going to be a thing. I\u2019d put any amount of money on that.\u201d The cost involved makes the technology <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thespoon.tech\/sks-2020-impossible-foods-ceo-on-cell-based-meat-its-never-going-to-be-a-thing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">much more suited for therapeutic use<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he added. Nonetheless, some 80 start-ups are currently studying lab-grown meat and one hopes to launch seafood products made from fish cells in mid-2021. Another group, Israeli-based Aleph Farm, is focusing on using its cell-based <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geektime.com\/aleph-farms-launches-space-foodtech\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3D bioprinting meat platform in space<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After a successful test on the International Space Station, the firm is now partnering with space agencies to develop a solution suitable for Mars.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some promising progress is also being made to make traditional meat production more sustainable. Aemetis announced that it had started producing biogas from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2020\/10\/23\/2113578\/0\/en\/Aemetis-Begins-Production-of-Below-Zero-Carbon-Intensity-Dairy-Biogas.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">methane collected at two dairy operations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The renewable natural gas is then processed into fuel ethanol at a Keyes, California, plant. The group hopes to expand the project to 17 dairies next year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amid all this talk of potential food disruptions, Oreo fans can rest easy as Mondelez built a vault to protect the cookie from disasters, including an asteroid that is expected to pass close to the Earth in November.
