The CEO of JBS, the world\u2019s biggest meat processor, explained that labour shortages have been an ongoing issue for the industry even before the pandemic, but current health and safety issues have been an accelerator. A food scientist told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fooddive.com\/news\/meat-processors-expedite-automation-as-pandemic-increases\/588166\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deep Dive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that some of the challenges, however, include the need for robots to be able to distinguish colours. Besides, animals have significant \u201cbiological variations,\u201d meaning that two chicken can have different wing sizes, something which is very difficult for robots to handle. To make sure they don\u2019t miss out on any new technology, Cargill\u2019s Protein and Animal Health said they are working closely with innovators in Silicon Valley.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking it a step further, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-tyson-foods-beef-inspections\/tyson-foods-workers-to-replace-some-federal-inspectors-at-u-s-beef-plant-idUSKBN27C35O\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tyson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> obtained a waiver from the USDA allowing it to use its own staff and a system of cameras and computers to partially replace federal inspectors at its beef plant in Kansas. The USDA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fooddive.com\/news\/tyson-to-use-own-workers-instead-of-some-federal-inspectors-at-beef-plant\/587982\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">already eased inspections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the poultry and pork sectors over the past few years, with an analyst telling Reuters that this would allow inspectors to focus on more complicated issues like animal welfare and food safety. Some activists warn, however, that data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show foodborne diseases are on the rise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tyson also rolled out <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fooddive.com\/news\/meat-processors-expedite-automation-as-pandemic-increases\/588166\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">infrared body temperature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scanners at all of its plants to slow the coronavirus spread. On the other hand, two whistleblowers have accused <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thecounter.org\/covid-19-testing-jbs-greeley-colorado-meatpacking\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JBS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of making employees without health insurance pay USD 100 for a COVID-19 test. A legal expert argued that the company should have covered the costs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A failed trial by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thespoon.tech\/report-walmart-to-stop-using-bossa-novas-shelf-scanning-robots\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walmart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that not all automation is useful. The company announced it would stop using the autonomous shelf-scanning robots it had been trying out for the past 3 years to monitor inventory.\u00a0 Walmart said that the robots were awkward for shoppers and that they were not adapted to the massive shift to online shopping. While this may be good news in terms of jobs, the CEO of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/business\/unilever-ceo-alan-jope-coronavirus-b41281.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unilever<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> warned that the worst of the economic impact of the pandemic is yet to be felt. He urged companies to invest in upgrading the skills of their workers to anticipate massive job losses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thespoon.tech\/nestle-acquired-freshly\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nestle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bought the remaining stake in meal delivery company Freshly last week for USD 950 million and a potential USD 550 million earnout. Freshly is currently delivering over 1 million meals every week, which should increase threefold following the acquisition. An analyst said that Freshly will allow Nestle to deliver more of its products directly to consumers, a growing trend across the industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADM, meanwhile, identified <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodingredientsfirst.com\/news\/adm-spotlights-holistic-health-and-beyond-the-bun-plant-based-developments-in-2021-outlook.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five major food trends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the world adjusts to the pandemic. It found that consumers are increasingly looking for nutrition which is good for both \u201cthe body and mind,\u201d notably with a focus on nutrients that are good for digestion. Sustainability and transparency are also a growing concern, ADM noted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Major beverage companies are in a race to design a paper bottle that can replace the existing plastic bottles. Coca-Cola announced its first <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thespoon.tech\/coca-cola-unveils-a-prototype-for-paper-bottles\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paper bottle prototype<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, although it still contains a liner and closure made from recycled plastic. It is now working on a prototype that doesn\u2019t have the plastic liner. The company, as well as competitors like Pepsi, hope to roll out paper bottles next year. The timing is right: scientists in Australia estimate that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2020\/11\/marine-microplastics-pollution-ocean-australia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there is 14.4 million mt of microplastics at the bottom of the seas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, twice as much plastic as there is on the oceans\u2019 surface. One researcher explained that \u201cThe deep ocean is a sink for microplastics,\u201d all of which risked showing up further down in our food chain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/napavalleyregister.com\/lifestyles\/food-and-cooking\/michelin-introduces-a-green-star\/article_9c7100ad-6697-5b33-809a-678551507b6b.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michelin Guide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, too, recognised the importance of a sustainable food supply chain when it launched the Michelin Green Star back in June. Some seven chefs have already been awarded for their \u201csustainable gastronomy.\u201d In France, however, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/21547790\/france-paris-lockdown-restaurants-closed-december-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chefs are warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the new lockdown measures could drastically transform the country\u2019s culinary landscape as standalone establishments struggle to cope and threaten to close.
