{"id":4582,"date":"2020-11-19T15:21:56","date_gmt":"2020-11-19T15:21:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commodityconversations.com\/wordpress2\/?p=4582"},"modified":"2020-11-19T15:21:56","modified_gmt":"2020-11-19T15:21:56","slug":"commodity-conversations-weekly-press-summary-143","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/commodityconversations.com\/wordpress2\/2020\/11\/19\/commodity-conversations-weekly-press-summary-143\/","title":{"rendered":"Commodity Conversations Weekly Press Summary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eight years after negotiations first started, 15 Asian nations signed the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/finance-and-economics\/2020\/11\/15\/the-meaning-of-rcep-the-worlds-biggest-trade-agreement\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">world\u2019s biggest trade agreement <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). The treaty is considered by some as somewhat symbolic and excludes most agricultural products, although it does highlight a tilt in Chinese trade towards more regional partners. At the same time, however, China\u2019s western trade partners have expressed frustrations at the claim that China detected coronavirus samples on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/health-coronavirus-china-food\/update-2-chinas-irritated-trade-partners-push-back-on-coronavirus-food-tests-idUSL1N2I32YC\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">packaging of food imports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In response, New Zealand doubted claims that its frozen beef had signs of the virus. And the WHO and FAO repeated their findings that the virus <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/health-coroanvirus-food-int\/no-firm-evidence-of-food-trade-spreading-coronavirus-fao-idUSKBN27Y0UP\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does not appear to spread through food trade.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EU is hoping that a new US President would <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/agriculture-food\/news\/agrifood-brief-so-long-and-thanks-for-all-the-fish\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ease the trade tensions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> built up by the previous administration. Negotiations over the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) have stalled but EU lawmakers said they hoped to resume talks soon. As a sign of goodwill, perhaps, a committee backed a proposal to remove <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20201105IPR90921\/lobster-deal-gets-trade-committee-backing?utm_source=EURACTIV&amp;utm_campaign=31475daa0f-AgriFood_Brief_COPY_01&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_c59e2fd7a9-31475daa0f-116260535\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EU duties on US lobsters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. US lobster producers have been struggling to compete because of duties from China and the EU\u2019s free trade deal with Canada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The situation concerning a potential trade deal between the EU and the UK does not look as promising, however. Tate &amp; Lyle and Associated British Foods suggested that Northern Ireland could face <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2020\/nov\/11\/brexit-uncertainty-may-cause-sugar-shortages-in-northern-ireland-warns-firm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supply issues in January 2021<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of the uncertainty surrounding Brexit negotiations. The current proposal does not outline how British goods will have access to Northern Ireland, as the region is due to remain in the EU\u2019s single customs market.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fish and the protection of British fisheries remain one of the main issues blocking an agreement. An expert noted that the issue was relatively unimportant when measured in terms of economic impact as it only represents 0.08% of the UK\u2019s GDP. The UK Prime Minister is not willing to make any concessions, however, because it is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/uk-europe\/opinion\/fish-and-brexit-chips\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highly symbolic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as it represents the UK\u2019s ability to regain its territorial sovereignty. France, meanwhile, has a large fishing fleet and the French President promised to block a deal unless its fishermen are granted access to British waters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of fish, new research identified issues concerning the practice of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucdavis.edu\/news\/fixed-effort-fishery-more-sustainable-economy-and-environment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">focusing only on abundant species<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Focusing on abundant species can sometimes have a significant impact on other species in what researchers called \u201cindirect extinction cascades\u201d. The fishing world is also unimpressed by China\u2019s campaign to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2020-11-02\/china-s-illegal-fishing-crackdown-rings-hollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crack down on illegal fishing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Yangtze River. China\u2019s massive fishing fleet is currently doing a lot more damage to distant fish stocks as far West Africa and the Galapagos. Vessels have to keep going further as the once-abundant Yangtze River, Yellow Sea, Bohai Sea and East China Sea are all effectively considered depleted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aquaculture and fish farms have long been promoted as a more sustainable method to produce seafood but a series of dramatic farming disasters has made the practice unpopular with many activists. They point to issues like fish escapes, disease, antibiotic use, and waste as a way to argue that fish farms should be kept out of our oceans. Nevertheless, innovation has made the industry <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2020\/11\/09\/the-continued-fight-over-farming-the-oceans\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a lot more sustainable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the past few years. The FAO argued that wild fish populations cannot meet the growing demand for seafood and that sustainable aquaculture will have to step in. As of 2018, 46% of the fish eaten globally came from a farm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some aquaculture innovations, like developing a more efficient feed based on microalgae, have been cheerfully accepted, while others remain controversial. In the US, for example, the FDA approved the first genetically modified salmon breeds in 2015 but the product is still not on the market because of legal challenges. The GMO salmon grows twice as fast and has been eaten by Canadians for years. A US court, however, ruled last week that the FDA failed to properly consider the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thecounter.org\/genetically-modified-salmon-aquabounty-fda-environment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-term risk of GMO salmon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before giving its approval.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rush to invest in the plant-based meat sector, meanwhile, continues. Unilever announced a plan to increase sales of meat alternatives <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/unilever-wants-bigger-bite-of-plant-based-market-11605657666\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five-fold to USD 1.2 billion in 5-7 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while McDonald\u2019s announced the launch of its own plant-based burger, uninspiringly called the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/mcdonalds-mcplant-plant-based-burger\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McPlant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At the same time, however, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2020-11-15\/butter-whole-milk-consumption-rise-as-dairy-survives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sale of traditional butter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been steadily rising over the past few years although consumption is not expected to recover to the levels seen before it had to compete with margarine.
