The EU ruled in 2018 that gene editing should be banned along the same lines as Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO), although the former does not involve the introduction of new genetic material. Moreover, English officials said they would look to replace the EU\u2019s subsidy system with payments <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/agriculture-food\/news\/uk-launches-consultation-on-gene-editing-signals-divergence-from-eu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">linked to environmental performance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Across the channel, the French consumers\u2019 agency DGCCRF concluded that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.terre-net.fr\/actualite-agricole\/economie-social\/article\/une-centaine-d-ogm-autorises-en-france-notamment-dans-l-alimentation-202-175201.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some authorised GMO products were sold<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in France but ruled that growers have generally been following the ban on planting GMO seeds. The comment comes after an investigation prompted by the discovery of an illegal GMO colza polt in 2018. The agency commented that some GMO seeds could be imported for processing but not for sowing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Irish protocol designed to avoid the return of a hard border in Northern Ireland after Brexit is \u201cunworkable\u201d in its current state, according to a letter signed by major supermarket chains, including Sainsbury, Marks and Spencer and Tesco UK. They warn that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8bdb2a68-8124-42d6-a477-d4ddf03000d8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">region could face major disruption in food supplies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when a grace period ends on March 31 and imports from the UK will be screened as they will effectively be entering the EU internal market. The supermarket chains argued that the government should negotiate a new arrangement with the EU. Dutch customs started enforcing the controls on meat imports and British truck drivers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/video\/2021\/jan\/12\/welcome-to-brexit-dutch-officials-seize-ham-sandwiches-from-british-drivers-video\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can no longer bring their ham sandwiches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A customs official told a surprised driver whose lunch was confiscated \u201cWelcome to Brexit\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farmers in Argentina have been protesting the government\u2019s effort to control inflation by limiting food exports. Eventually, the government <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-01-06\/farmers-are-spooked-by-return-to-food-protectionism-in-argentina\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cancelled its plan to ban corn exports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and said it will cap daily sales instead, although the announcement was not enough to stop the strike. Russia is also worrying importers as it plans to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-01-12\/russian-wheat-tax-risk-spooks-traders-roiling-egyptian-tender\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impose an export tax on wheat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, following comments by the President that food prices were too high. In response, an economist at the FAO argued that protectionist measures rarely work to lower food prices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ivory Coast seems to be facing the opposite problem as it is storing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/uk-ivorycoast-cocoa-stocks\/ivory-coast-faces-100000-tonne-cocoa-bean-pile-up-as-demand-slows-idUSKBN29I0PV\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100,000mt of unsold cocoa beans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Traders explained that major chocolate buyers asked to postpone their Oct-Dec purchases to Jan-Mar in response to a fall in demand caused by the coronavirus. Similarly, sales in branded coffee shops in the US are expected to remain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-coffee-shops-u-s\/u-s-coffee-shops-will-only-return-to-pre-pandemic-sales-in-2023-report-idUSKBN29G294\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">below pandemic levels until 2022<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some 208 stores out of 37,189 had to close last year, while the industry\u2019s turnover in 2020 was down 24%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coronavirus has refocused the attention on rising obesity rates which the UN describes as a \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-11-27\/how-covid-19-has-turned-the-spotlight-back-on-obesity-quicktake\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">global pandemic in its own right<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d Investors are now putting pressure on food companies to address the associated health concerns of their products, which can be mitigated by reformulation, smaller packages and clearer labels. More and more governments are imposing a targeted tax, like in the UK. However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegrocer.co.uk\/health\/millions-of-pounds-unaccounted-for-from-sugar-tax-claims-report\/652006.article\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a new report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is asking the UK government to disclose what it has done with the GBP 336 million (USD 459 million) raised from the tax on sugar-sweetened beverages in 2019\/20 and is asking that the government fulfil its promise to spend it on children\u2019s health and food programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cargill\u2019s marketing strategy is being challenged in the US by the Family Farm Action Alliance which argued that the claim that Cargill\u2019s meat comes from \u201cindependent family farms&#8221; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thecounter.org\/meat-cargill-independent-family-farms-meaning-ftc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amounts to false advertising<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Cargill highlights that it sources its meat through contract arrangements but the complainant argued that the farms should be considered subsidiaries. An expert commented that the situation could take years to reach a conclusion, as the US government has a clear definition of what a \u201cfamily farm\u201d is but no definition for \u201cindependent farms\u201d.
