Brazil\u2019s oilseeds crushers association Abiove, however, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/64f82f18-f67b-49ac-b785-ea27394640f4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">refused to impose a \u201csoy moratorium\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on farmers in the Cerrado, arguing that farmers own their land and should have a right to decide what to do with it. Abiove argued that downstream companies that are putting pressure on soybean farmers should instead look to work with them to find a solution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The issue continues to hold diplomatic proportions, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/brazil-france-environment\/brazil-vice-president-trades-barbs-with-frances-macron-over-amazon-deforestation-idUSL1N2JO1RN\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France\u2019s President said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that importing soybean from Brazil would be akin to condoning the deforestation of the Amazon. But with the EU importing over 8 million mt of Brazilian soy in 2020, up 61% on year and the second biggest market after China, displacing Brazilian soybean won\u2019t be easy. While the latest pledge will help make the EU\u2019s salmon supply chain deforestation-free, an analyst argued that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edie.net\/blog\/Less-meat-is-the-only-pathway-to-tackling-deforestation-scarring-soy-supply-chains\/6098857\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reducing our meat consumption<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the only realistic way of fighting deforestation in Brazil. Until then, the EU\u2019s food safety agency just <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2021\/01\/17\/worms-are-safe-to-eat-the-european-unions-food-safety-agency-says\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cleared worms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, saying they were safe to eat, something that the UN FAO has been saying since 2013.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/brazilian-sugar-and-ethanol-firms-biosev-raizen-confirm-talks-2020-09-09\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">footsteps of Louis Dreyfus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodingredientsfirst.com\/news\/cargill-in-talks-to-divest-assets-in-global-sugar-trading-business.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cargill is looking to sell its 50% stake<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in sugar trading group Alvean, which would effectively signal Cargill\u2019s exit from the world of sugar trading. This comes as the US Food and Drug Administration is under increasing pressure from consumer groups to have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/02\/26\/well\/eat\/are-foods-labeled-low-sugar-misleading-consumers.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stricter rules for sugar content labelling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The FDA doesn\u2019t allow the \u201cLow Sugar\u201d label to be used in marketing because it has not defined what the threshold is. However, a report by the New York Times shows that F&amp;B companies are using other misleading labels, such as \u201clightly sweetened.\u201d A number of these companies have faced lawsuits by consumers claiming the labels were deliberately misleading.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a move that grabbed headlines, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thecounter.org\/coca-cola-ends-ties-sugar-research-group-ilsi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coca-Cola withdrew its support <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the International Life Sciences Institute, an organisation Bloomberg said was known to focus on pro-sugar lobbying and research. Coca-Cola was also among a number of other F&amp;B giants to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fooddive.com\/news\/coca-cola-tyson-foods-and-adm-among-companies-to-suspend-political-donatio\/593252\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">freeze lobbying money<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> following the attacks on the Capitol. This is part of a wider move from major US companies increasingly wary of their image in the eyes of consumers. The country\u2019s biggest F&amp;B groups already <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fooddive.com\/news\/where-they-stand-political-donations-from-10-of-the-largest-food-and-bever\/585516\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slashed political donations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by up to half in the 2020 Presidential campaign compared to the previous one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/home-delivered-food-has-a-huge-climate-cost-so-which-cuisine-is-the-worst-culprit-151564\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research carried out in Australia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that the type of food delivery that produced the most packaging waste was burgers, followed by Thai food. It also found that paper bag packaging produced more emissions than plastic as a result of the carbon released. The good news, though, is that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/lanabandoim\/2021\/01\/14\/amazon-bans-toxic-chemicals-from-its-food-packaging\/?sh=48e1b5cf2d31\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> announced it was banning toxic PFAS chemicals which often line cardboard and wrappers as well as limiting non-recyclable packaging for its Amazon Kitchen brands. In the same vein, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/public-interest\/2021\/01\/mcdonalds-pledges-to-stop-using-pfas-in-food-packaging-by-2025.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McDonald\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said it would phase out PFAS in its food packaging by 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restaurants continue to resent the high commissions charged by third party delivery companies. As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thespoon.tech\/restaurants-hate-third-party-delivery-services-actually\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one podcaster put it<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while UberEats doubled revenues in 2020, 17% of the US restaurants shut down. Regardless, delivery companies continue to push innovation. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thespoon.tech\/grubhub-to-offer-in-car-ordering-through-fiat-vehicles\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grubhub<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for instance, tied up with Fiat Chrysler to make it easier to order food from inside a car. Meanwhile, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thespoon.tech\/walmart-to-test-grocery-delivery-to-smart-home-lockers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walmart is testing a smart locker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> delivery system that would make it easier for people to order their groceries and get delivered even when they\u2019re out. The delivery app companies also welcomed a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thecounter.org\/proposition-22-california-gig-economy-contractors-uber-instacart-grubhub\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new bill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> passed by the outgoing President making it easier for them to classify their workers as independent contractors instead of employees, saving the companies a lot of costs.
