We have decided to focus all our energy and attention on exciting developments for our core products (sugar &amp; ethanol media monitoring &#8211; check it out <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/ecruu.com\/#_home\"><b>here<\/b><\/a><b>).\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Make sure you follow <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/commodityconversations.com\/wordpress2\/\"><b>commodityconversations.com<\/b><\/a><b> to continue receiving insights and updates on sustainable agriculture.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bad weather conditions around the world are threatening to tighten grain stocks which are already at their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketscreener.com\/quote\/future\/WHEAT-FUTURES-W-CBR--16218\/news\/Corn-Rises-as-Midwest-Remains-Frigid-33018052\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lowest in the past five years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Brazil\u2019s corn crop is at risk because of the dry weather, a cold wave <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSL8N2MB04C\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">destroyed seedlings in Europe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and now the US Midwest is expected to suffer from abnormally cold and dry weather over the next few days. Demand has been increasing at the same time and governments are now looking to control food inflation. For one, Brazil announced that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/brazil-commodities\/update-1-brazil-suspends-soy-corn-import-duties-until-year-end-ministry-says-idINL1N2MC328\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suspension of corn import duties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, among other grains, had been extended until the end of the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China issued new feed guidelines in response to the rise in grain prices which could have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-feed-rations\/reshaping-grain-trade-china-moves-to-change-animal-feed-recipes-idUSKBN2C81YU\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-term repercussions on global trade flows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The directive recommends that livestock operators reduce the amount of corn and soybeans used and replace them with cheaper alternatives, such as rice, cassava, barley, rapeseed meal, cottonseed meal or peanut meal. Some doubted whether this would actually change consumption patterns as cost will remain the main factor. One analyst also noted that soybeans and corn maintain a significant supply advantage as \u201cthe volume of soybeans the US can load in a single day is larger than the yearly global export volume of cottonseed meal\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New data revealed that consumers globally cooked and baked more during the pandemic as global <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSKBN2C800F\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grocery sales were up 10% in 2020<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The data highlighted some regional differences, such as alcohol sales which grew 20-25% in Western Europe and Latin America but dropped 10% in Asia. In the UK, consumers are also focusing on their health as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegrocer.co.uk\/fruit-and-veg\/sales-of-berries-in-double-digit-growth-during-winter-months\/655321.article\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sale of berries remains higher than usual<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A researcher noted that shoppers were no longer focusing on calorie count but on holistic health and the importance of nutrients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nestle saw its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/1e66673b-1dd0-4b3d-aff2-6736d93936b8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strongest quarterly sales growth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a decade in the first quarter thanks to the rise\u200b_ in at-home coffee consumption. Dairy and pet food sales also reported strong growth, while the firm expanded its ecommerce and health science portfolio. In contrast, Danone witnessed a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodprocessing.com\/industrynews\/2021\/danone-still-struggles-with-pandemic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fall in sales<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the first quarter. Essential dairy and plant-based foods sales were up but not enough to offset the poor performance of the bottled water and special nutrition segments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EU\u2019s agriculture commissioner expressed his support for a citizens initiative called \u201cEnd of cage age\u201d\u00a0 which seeks to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/agriculture-food\/news\/european-commission-open-to-consider-cage-rearing-ban-initiative\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ban the use of cages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to improve animal welfare. The petition gained 1.4 million signatures and the commissioner said he would now work on drafting legislation. In response, the livestock industry argued that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/agriculture-food\/opinion\/banning-all-cages-for-farm-animals-a-theoretical-concept-and-its-actual-consequences\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oversimplifying the concept of cages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could actually have negative consequences. The idea that \u201call enclosures are inherently bad for animals\u201d overshadows the complexity of animal welfare and the specificity of certain animals. Instead, animal well-being has more to do with \u201chousing parameters, enrichments, animals\u2019 ability to move freely, the risk of injuries and diseases\u201d, according to the livestock industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Major food firms are also worried that the EU will vote in favour of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/ousivMolt\/idUSKBN2C71I2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new restrictions on the marketing of plant-based meat alternatives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Under the proposal, plant-based products will not be allowed to be marketed as dairy alternatives. Nestle would have to rebrand its Almond Latte which is marketed as a \u201cdelicious alternative to dairy\u201d and some worry that soy drink makers will even have to change their packaging to avoid comparison to milk cartons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oatly argued that the proposal would place unfair restrictions on plant-based products and hinder the effort to decarbonise food production. Otherwise, the firm officially <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/oprah-backed-oatly-files-for-ipo-11618873268?mod=searchresults_pos6&amp;page=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">filed documents for an IPO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the US. The papers revealed that Oatly\u2019s loss widened to USD 60.4 million in 2020. Meanwhile, the sector is due to get more crowded with the launch of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodbusinessnews.net\/articles\/18356-the-coca-cola-co-unveils-oat-milk-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coca-Cola\u2019s Simply Oat drink<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And the world\u2019s largest meat supplier, Brazil\u2019s JBS, announced the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-04-19\/jbs-expands-plant-based-food-products-with-vivera-acquisition\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acquisition of Vivera BV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Europe\u2019s third-largest plant-based food producer. The Dutch firm was acquired for USD 408 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After years of debate on the proper ratio of cow to goat milk in halloumi, the EU granted the cheese a protected designation of origins (PDO) status. Perhaps surprisingly, the decision could potentially have geopolitical implications and help with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/agriculture-food\/news\/end-of-the-halloumi-protection-saga-brings-prospects-of-peace-in-cyprus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reunification of Cyprus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The documents also recognised hellim, the Turkish word for the halloumi produced on the Turkish enclave on the island.
