It has also announced a \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/china-vows-zero-tolerance-commodities-014648116.html\">zero tolerance<\/a> for monopoly behaviour\u2019 in the spot and futures markets and the \u2018hoarding\u2019 of commodities\u2019. The moves are likely to impact the oil and metals markets more than agriculture, but they could make it harder for the country\u2019s smaller agricultural commodity importers.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, China has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-corn-braun-idUSKCN2D00TU\">already bought<\/a> 8.2 million tonnes of corn for 2021\/22, nearly one-third of their expected new-crop corn purchases.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globaltimes.cn\/page\/202105\/1224259.shtml\">Thousands of people<\/a> attended the funeral last week of Yuan Longping, the Chinese \u2018Father of Rice\u2019. \u00a0Yuan, who did for rice what the Nobel prize winner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/peace\/1970\/borlaug\/biographical\/\">Norman Borlaug<\/a> did for wheat, developed the world\u2019s first commercially viable hybrid rice varieties in 1973, <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/china-mourns-death-man-saved-110356538.html\">saving millions of people from starvation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia\u2019s plans for food self-sufficiency by increasing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/Environment\/2021\/0520\/Why-Indonesia-s-rice-paddy-expansion-is-raising-climate-concerns\">rice acreage<\/a> have raised worries over increased GHG (methane) emissions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/drought-imperils-economy-in-californias-farm-country-11621589407\">California\u2019s drought<\/a> was in the news again last week, with almond farmers looking to uproot older trees to save water for younger, higher-yielding trees. Water shortages were also a topic in France where citizens accuse <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/world\/europe\/too-thirsty-frances-volvic-blamed-as-streams-run-dry\">Volvic<\/a>, the mineral water bottler, of drying up rivers and lowering the water table.<\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/may\/23\/prince-charles-small-scale-family-farms-must-be-at-heart-of-sustainable-future?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other\">heir to the throne<\/a> has stepped into the debate over renewable agriculture, emphasizing small farmers\u2019 role in rural communities and ensuring a sustainable supply chain. The EU agrees. It has announced plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/may\/24\/fewer-bigger-more-intensive-eu-vows-to-stem-drastic-loss-of-small-farms\">reform<\/a> its current subsidy schemes to halt the decline in the number of small farms. The EU agriculture commissioner said: \u201cThe European food sector in the past was based on small farms, and it should be in the future as well.\u201d *<\/p>\n<p>Moving in the opposite direction (as usual), the UK is on the verge of signing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2021\/may\/23\/irresponsible-australia-trade-deal-will-bring-ruin-for-uk-farmers-critics-warn\">a trade deal<\/a> with Australia that critics claim will push the UK\u2019s small livestock farmers into bankruptcy.<\/p>\n<p>The first shot has been fired in the next \u2018food versus fuel\u2019 war with <a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Alternative-Energy\/Biofuels\/Global-Food-Prices-Soaring-As-Demand-For-Biofuels-Continues-To-Climb.html\">an article<\/a> entitled \u2018Global Food Prices Soaring as Demand for Biofuels Continues to Climb\u2019. We expect to see many similar articles in the months ahead. (However, the award for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-05-23\/cannibal-mice-plague-threatens-sydney-homes-and-australian-farms?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">the most alarming headline<\/a> of the week goes to Bloomberg with \u2018Cannibal Mice Plague Threatens Sydney Homes and Australian Farms\u2019.)<\/p>\n<p>Argentina\u2019s port workers went on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/grains-argentina-strike-idUSL2N2N61NL\">strike<\/a> last week over work conditions and pay, temporarily interrupting grain and oilseed shipments. Water levels in the Parana River continue to drop, reducing the draft and limiting the tonnage loaded on each vessel in Rosario.<\/p>\n<p>Lamu, Kenya\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-05-20\/maersk-calls-bolster-kenya-s-ambitions-of-becoming-maritime-hub?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">Indian Ocean container port<\/a>, began operations last week. Once finished, the port will have 32 berths.<\/p>\n<p>An Egyptian court has refused an <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/egypt-court-rejects-appeal-free-140018500.html\">appeal<\/a> by the owner of the Ever-Given container ship to let it leave the country. The Suez Canal Authority claims more than $900 million in damages, while the vessel\u2019s owners have offered to pay $150 million.<\/p>\n<p>In bad news for fish eaters, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-57202758\">a recent study<\/a> has found that fish are less carbon-friendly than previously thought. The study found that bottom trawling emits about the same amount of carbon dioxide globally as the aviation industry. <a href=\"https:\/\/globalsalmoninitiative.org\/en\/sustainability-report\/\">Salmon farming<\/a> is environmentally friendlier.<\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg reports that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-05-24\/cargill-heads-to-record-profits-on-booming-agricultural-markets?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">Cargill<\/a> made almost $4.3 billion in net income during the first nine months of its fiscal year, surpassing its best-ever total annual profit.<\/p>\n<p>A planned \u20ac150 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/economy\/cheese-the-new-battleground-in-ireland-s-climate-debate-1.4573032\">cheese factory<\/a> in Ireland has hit the headlines as Dutch dairy manufacturers try to bypass limits on the size of their herds by outsourcing production to other countries.<\/p>\n<p>Bowery Farming, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-05-25\/farm-startup-with-ties-to-nyc-history-hits-2-3-billion-in-value?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">an indoor-agriculture<\/a> company, has raised $300 million in a funding round that sets its value at $2.3 billion. It brings the total raised by the company to $472 million.<\/p>\n<p>US President Biden is taking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/05\/23\/biden-farmers-beef-climate-emissions-490237\">a careful approach<\/a> to the livestock industry\u2019s GHG emissions. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/p09hr5jm\">an interview with the BBC<\/a>, John Kerry, the President\u2019s environment tsar, said that the US government would not tell Americans to eat less meat.
