{"id":5552,"date":"2021-06-01T10:04:22","date_gmt":"2021-06-01T10:04:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commodityconversations.com\/wordpress2\/?p=5552"},"modified":"2021-06-17T09:18:50","modified_gmt":"2021-06-17T09:18:50","slug":"weekly-news-summary-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/commodityconversations.com\/wordpress2\/2021\/06\/01\/weekly-news-summary-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekly News Summary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>China\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forexlive.com\/news\/!\/china-regulator-reportedly-calls-on-banks-to-unwind-retail-exposure-20210526\">banking regulator<\/a> has told banks to stop selling\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">to retail customers any <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">investment products linked to commodities futures and to unwind any existing positions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Chinese customs authorities are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-05-26\/china-s-scrutiny-of-corn-imports-spur-u-s-cargo-cancellations?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">restricting corn imp<\/a>orts into free trade zones. Importers may have cancelled up to 1 million mt of corn purchases as a result.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.igc.int\/en\/default.aspx\">The International Grain Council<\/a> has warned that global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-05-27\/global-grain-supply-crunch-is-set-to-get-worse-igc-says?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">grain stocks<\/a> could reach 595 million mt in 2021-22, the lowest level in seven years. The IGC says the drop is due to rising animal-feed demand and drought in Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>In a sign that environmental concerns may soon affect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/may\/25\/uk-supermarkets-will-seek-soy-alternatives-if-amazon-protections-weakened\">trade flows<\/a>, British supermarkets have announced that they will look at alternatives to Brazilian soy if Brazil passes new legislation to weaken environmental protection for the Amazon rainforest.<\/p>\n<p>New Zealand\u2019s Fonterra, the world\u2019s biggest dairy exporter, has forecast that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3b315e4d-eb17-4a94-8acb-d5b628282b5d\">milk prices<\/a> could hit a record over the next year due to surging demand from China.<\/p>\n<p>Ceres Global Ag Corp has said it will build a $350 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/ceres-global-build-canola-processing-facility-saskatchewan-2021-05-25\/\">canola-crushing facility<\/a> near the US-Canadian border in Northgate, Saskatchewan.<\/p>\n<p>A leaked internal company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/4c98d410-38b1-4be8-95b2-d029e054f492\">presentation<\/a> shows that 60 per cent of Nestl\u00e9\u2019s traditional packaged consumer food and beverage products do not meet internationally recognized health standards. Although many of their products will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/nestle-over-half-its-food-will-never-be-healthy-report-2021-5?r=US&amp;IR=T\">never<\/a> be healthy, the company is on a mission to make other products <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/business\/companies-markets\/nestle-eyes-new-strategy-as-leaked-file-show-many-products-unhealthy\">healthier<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mondelez has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-05-26\/mondelez-to-buy-european-snacking-company-chipita-for-2-billion?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">agreed to buy<\/a> European snack maker Chipita SA for about $2 billion. Chipita has a portfolio of croissant and baked snack brands that will broaden Mondelez\u2019s presence in the snack market.<\/p>\n<p>European officials have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodmanufacture.co.uk\/Article\/2021\/05\/26\/EU-officials-reject-plant-based-dairy-ban\">rejected changes<\/a> to food regulation that would have banned the use of dairy terminology and imagery to describe plant-based cheese and milk alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being four to seven times the price of ordinary eggs, organic and bird-friendly speciality eggs account for about a third of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-05-27\/farmers-see-sustainable-eggs-as-6-1-billion-industry-s-next-big-thing?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">US egg market and<\/a> are predicted to hit 70 per cent within five years. Eggs from birds grown on farms using regenerative agriculture are expected to be the next \u2018big thing\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>According to a recent survey, about a third of US adults say they are making a conscious effort to consume <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/meatless-monday-comes-memorial-day-133019002.html\">less meat<\/a>. Hispanic shoppers, in particular, are trying to curb their meat intake due to its relatively high cost.<\/p>\n<p>New research from Michigan State University has found that while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slashgear.com\/caffeine-may-keep-you-awake-but-it-wont-help-you-get-through-the-day-26674683\/\">caffeine<\/a> may help you stay awake after a night of sleep deprivation, it won\u2019t necessarily help you get through the day\u2019s tasks.<\/p>\n<p>On the good news front, Twitter lit up last week with the reemergence of a <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/apt.13523\">2016 mega-analysis<\/a> that found that coffee reduces the risk for alcohol drinkers of developing liver cirrhosis. And the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coffee-liver-cirrhosis-idUSKCN0VR2JN\">more coffee<\/a> you drink, the better. One cup a day resulted in a 22 per cent lower risk of cirrhosis. With two cups, the risk dropped by 43 per cent, while it declined 57 per cent for three cups and 65 per cent with four cups.<\/p>\n<p>Leading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.confectioneryproduction.com\/news\/35339\/mars-mondelez-ferrero-and-nestle-call-on-eu-to-urgently-deliver-cocoa-due-diligence\/\">confectionery companies<\/a>, including Mars, Mondel\u0113z, Ferrero, Nestl\u00e9 and Unilever, have called on the EU to reverse a decision to delay legislation governing cocoa supply chains in West Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria may lose as much as $700 million in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-05-27\/shortage-of-asia-made-jute-bags-threatens-nigerian-cocoa-exports?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">cocoa<\/a> bean export earnings because of a shortage of jute bags. The Covid situation in India coupled with floods in Bangladesh has curtailed global jute production. Ivory Coast produces its own jute bags, while Ghana and Cameroon appear to have stocked up in advance.<\/p>\n<p>US Farmers are looking at <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/stinkweed-false-flax-oilseeds-race-110302171.html\">new oilseed crops<\/a> to feed the anticipated surge in demand from renewable diesel. They may have found a candidate in \u2018stinkweed\u2019 that has been genetically modified to remove the stink. Carinata and camelina &#8211; known as false flax \u2013 are other candidates.<\/p>\n<p>A federal judge in California has once again <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corporatecrimereporter.com\/news\/200\/judge-chhabria-again-turns-down-effort-to-settle-bayer-monsanto-roundup-future-claims\/\">turned down<\/a> a request by Bayer to settle potential future cancer claims against Roundup weed killer. The company is reported to be considering removing Roundup from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/breakingviews\/capital-calls-bayers-weedkiller-woes-just-wont-die-2021-05-27\/\">US residential market<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In shipping news, the cost of moving a 40-foot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-05-27\/shipping-container-rates-top-10-000-from-asia-to-europe?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">container<\/a> from Shanghai to Rotterdam rose to $10,174 last week, up 3.1 per cent from a week earlier and up 485 per cent from a year ago, according to the Drewry World Container Index. Drewry\u2019s composite index of eight major routes rose to $6,257, up 293 per cent from a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of this month, Turkey will begin digging the 45-kilometre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-05-30\/erdogan-to-start-building-15-billion-canal-project-in-june?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">Canal Istanbul<\/a> to link the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara.
