There are five container terminals in Ningbo, the third-largest container port in the world after Shanghai and Singapore.<\/p>\n<p>The closure leads to concerns that the rapid spread of the delta variant will lead to a repeat of last year&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2021\/8\/13\/is-chinas-port-closure-a-canary-in-a-covid-mine\">shipping nightmares<\/a>. It could lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-08-12\/massive-china-port-shutdown-raises-fears-of-closures-worldwide?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">even higher freight rates<\/a>. The benchmark cost of shipping a container from Shanghai to Los Angeles has tripled over the past year. The F.T. writes that the world&#8217;s ports face the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/10e71eff-e59c-46fb-a9aa-a480bc86c093?shareType=nongift\">most significant disruption<\/a> since the start of container shipping 65 years ago, with 353 container ships stuck outside ports, more than double the number from earlier in the year.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, we reported that Maersk, the world&#8217;s largest container shipping firm, had reported profits for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/08\/06\/maersk-q2-2021.html\">their second quarter of $5.1 billion<\/a>, up 200 per cent from the $1.7 billion in the same period last year. This week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/6145121c-7069-4ca5-bd8f-429461617d37\">Hapag-Lloyd reported a net profit<\/a> for the six months to June of \u20ac2.7 billion, compared to a total net profit of \u20ac977m in the previous ten years. Hapag-Lloyd&#8217;s average freight cost per 20ft container rose 46 per cent to $1,612 in the first six months of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian reports on the growing momentum behind a shift to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/aug\/11\/regenerative-farming-shift-could-reduce-uk-climate-emissions-say-experts\">regenerative agriculture<\/a> in the U.K. The country&#8217;s National Farmers&#8217; Union has set out an ambition for U.K. farming to be climate neutral by 2040.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">The global market for<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/aug\/14\/weedkilling-robots-farming-pesticide-use-sustainable\">agricultural robots<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">for seeding, harvesting and environmental monitoring is expected to increase from $5.4 billion in 2020 to more than $20 billion by 2026. \u00a0Robots can help reduce soil disturbance, which can contribute to erosion, and allow farmers to reduce or even eradicate the use of herbicides.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Indonesia&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/indonesia-palmoil-climate-idUSL4N2OZ0EG\">three-year ban on new palm oil permits<\/a> ends in September, and conservationists urge the country to extend or make it permanent. A separate moratorium on new forest clearance for palm or logging, covering about 66 million hectares of primary forest and peatland, remains in place.<\/p>\n<p>The worst drought since 1977 has <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Technology\/wireStory\/severe-drought-devastates-washington-states-wheat-crop-79406669\">devasted the wheat harvest<\/a> in eastern Washington state. Bloomberg warns that poor wheat crops in Canada and Russia will lead to higher bread prices and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-08-14\/wheat-supplies-are-shrinking-and-it-s-bad-news-for-bread-prices?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">food inflation<\/a>. Bloomberg is also worried that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-08-12\/california-drought-a-dry-season-is-turning-into-drought-era?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">California&#8217;s current drought<\/a> could become permanent.<\/p>\n<p>Farmers in eastern Canada may have to euthanize and dispose of more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-08-10\/farmers-may-cull-130-000-hogs-as-quebec-strike-halts-pork-plant?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">130,000 hogs<\/a> due to a strike at the pork processing facility in Vallee-Jonction, Quebec. The plant usually slaughters 36,000 hogs each week but has been shut since end-April.<\/p>\n<p>This week, there was more discussion on the effect of the <a href=\"https:\/\/plantbasednews.org\/opinion\/the-long-read\/livestock-farmers-veganism\/\">alt-meat movement\u00a0<\/a>on livestock farmers and the roughly half a million people employed in the U.S. meat processing industry. Meat processing is the top-ranked manufacturing industry by employment in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>CNN reports on <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2021\/08\/12\/business\/perfect-day-dairy-protein-hnk-intl-spc\/index.html\">Perfect Day<\/a>, a California-based start-up that uses fungi to make dairy protein &#8220;molecularly identical&#8221; to the protein in cow&#8217;s milk. The company grows the fungus in fermentation tanks to produce whey protein. They then filter and dry it into a powder for use in products including cheese and ice cream.<\/p>\n<p>Olam International has picked London for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/4e41c418-bc11-4166-9335-25d6495ae1d3\">IPO of food ingredients business<\/a>, Olam Food Ingredients, with a secondary listing in Singapore. \u00a0OFI last week reported earnings before interest of S$316m ($233m) for the six months to June with sales of S$6.8 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Wilmar International has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theedgesingapore.com\/capital\/results\/wilmar-reports-higher-1hfy2021-earnings-better-selling-prices-and-volumes-pay?__cf_chl_managed_tk__=pmd_dde77f3378f0868b784aa500add7e855a1f08097-1629045916-0-gqNtZGzNA2KjcnBszQjO\">reported earnings<\/a> of US$750.9 million for the first half of 2021, up 23 per cent year on year. Revenue was up 30.4 per cent to US$29.5 billion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2021\/8\/10\/bayer-loses-appeal-as-jury-rules-its-weed-killer-causes-cancer\">A California appeals court<\/a> has refused to overturn a 2019 verdict that awarded more than $2 billion to a couple who claimed they fell ill after using the herbicide Roundup but left intact a ruling that reduced the award to $86.7 million. It is Bayer&#8217;s third consecutive appeals court loss over Roundup.<\/p>\n<p>Bayer has other woes with Corteva Agriscience&#8217;s announcement that it plans to sell Enlist, their <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/corteva-launches-brazil-biotech-soy-030000708.html\">biotech soybean seeds<\/a>, in Brazil in competition to Bayer AG&#8217;s Intacta genetically modified soy technology. Corteva&#8217;s Enlist beans have already captured 35 per cent of the U.S. soy area.<\/p>\n<p>Cargill&#8217;s CEO has given an <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6089480\/cargill-ceo-david-maclennan-agriculture\/\">interview<\/a> to Time magazine. It is too wide-ranging to be summarized, but I did like his answer to a question as to the best way to feed the world&#8217;s growing population. &#8220;Make sure that you can travel across borders. Don&#8217;t erect trade barriers. Don&#8217;t use food as a weapon. Practice comparative advantage. Use your natural resources of your region, grow what is best suited for the soil, the climate, the access to water.&#8221; (Well said!)<\/p>\n<p>And finally, you will be familiar with arabica and robusta coffee but have you tried <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therakyatpost.com\/2021\/08\/13\/forget-arabica-coffee-have-you-tried-malaysias-own-liberica-coffee\/\">liberica coffee<\/a>.
