The FT wonders whether it will lead <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/042373fd-6a1a-4003-93a9-02c91ac8719a\">Viterra to IPO<\/a> while Javier Blas gives his take on the acquisition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2022-01-26\/glencore-makes-a-major-foray-into-american-agriculture-in-time-for-u-s-midterms?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Agricultural commodity traders are worried about a Russian invasion of Ukraine. Agweb has a couple of articles on what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agweb.com\/markets\/world-markets\/ukraine-russia-tensions-what-it-could-mean-agriculture\">conflict<\/a> might mean for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agweb.com\/markets\/market-analysis\/markets-react-tension-mounts-between-russia-and-ukraine\">world markets<\/a>. Bloomberg looks at how Russia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/ukraine-economic-arteries-fear-worst-063355139.html\">past actions<\/a> have impacted trade flows and how an invasion might restrict trade. Meanwhile, Ukrainian corn has been going <a href=\"https:\/\/www.argusmedia.com\/en\/news\/2296009-indonesia-turns-to-ukrainian-corn\">as far afield<\/a> as Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Agricensus looks at what might happen to Russia\u2019s grain exports if the world cuts the country off from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agricensus.com\/Article\/Proposed-US-EU-sanctions-on-Russia-could-slash-grain-exports-20372.html\">SWIFT payment<\/a> system. Any disruptions to Russian exports could prove a boon for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/asia\/french-wheat-needs-find-new-export-outlets-says-olam-2022-01-28\/\">French wheat exporters<\/a> who have been losing export share to Russia.<\/p>\n<p>There are no signs that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2022\/1\/24\/indias-dependence-on-imported-cooking-oil-to-continue\">India\u2019s vegoil appetite<\/a> will fall anytime soon. Domestic consumption should climb by as much as 17 per cent over the next four years.<\/p>\n<p>Conflict could lead to higher food prices. A researcher at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mintecglobal.com\/\">Mintec<\/a> tells Bloomberg she sees agricultural commodity prices beginning to peak and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2022-01-28\/supply-chain-latest-expensive-food-even-if-crop-prices-ease?srnd=economics-vp&amp;sref=DGDhw0Nx\">likely retreating<\/a> into the second half of 2022. Still, it could take until at least 2023 before consumers feel the benefit. Reuters also thinks we may have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/us\/commodity-prices-likely-be-hit-by-slowdown-before-end-2023-kemp-2022-01-27\/\">wait for 2023<\/a> for prices to ease.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/research\/crop-losses-climate-crisis-cost-billions-dollars-insurance-payouts\">payments to US farmers<\/a> due to drought rose more than 400 per cent between 1995 and 2020 to $1.65 billion, while payments due to excess moisture rose nearly 300 per cent to $2.61 billion. The federal government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/us-crop-insurance-payouts-rise-sharply-climate-change-worsens-droughts-floods-2022-01-27\/\">pays about 60 per cent<\/a> of the nation\u2019s crop insurance premiums through taxpayer subsidies.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s Parana State estimates its 2021\/22 soybean crop at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agriculture.com\/markets\/newswire\/brazils-parana-trims-soybean-crop-forecast-amid-severe-drought\">12.83 million tonnes<\/a>, down 35 per cent from 2020\/21 and below a previous projection of 18.4 million tonnes, due to low rainfall and high temperatures provoked by La Nina. The weather phenomenon has also led <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-27\/heaviest-rains-since-1921-curb-south-african-corn-plantings?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">South Africa\u2019s farmers<\/a> to plant less acreage after record rainfall curtailed sowings.<\/p>\n<p>Farmers in Brazil, Argentina and the US are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-25\/farmers-hoard-crops-as-dry-brazil-weather-keeps-prices-elevated?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">holding back crop sales<\/a> in expectation of higher prices. The three countries account for more than <a href=\"https:\/\/s1.q4cdn.com\/365366812\/files\/doc_financials\/2021\/q4\/ADM-Q4-2021-earnings-presentation.pdf\">three-quarters<\/a> of global corn and soybean exports.<\/p>\n<p>But it is not just food prices that are soaring. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/analysis\/cotton-hits-new-decade-highs-joining-the-commodity-inflation-club-200615994\">Cotton has hit new ten-year highs<\/a> for the fourth time in five months.<\/p>\n<p>CNN worries that rising food prices are <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/01\/26\/perspectives\/inflation-food-prices-fed-interest-rates\/index.html\">hurting<\/a> those that can least afford them and calls for the US Fed to raise interest rates to dampen inflation expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Higher interest rates won\u2019t solve the labour shortage in <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/red-hot-rally-palm-oil-000000925.html#:~:text=1%20%2F%202-,Red%2DHot%20Rally%20in%20Palm%20Oil%20Reveals%20Dirty%20Jobs%20That,of%20jobs%20that%20nobody%20wants.\">Malaysia\u2019s palm oil<\/a> sector, where output has fallen to a five-year low. Foreign workers make up around 85 per cent of the labour force on plantations.<\/p>\n<p>Thailand\u2019s government is concerned about the impact that higher palm oil prices will have on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokpost.com\/business\/2253391\/minister-vows-to-tackle-high-palm-oil-prices\">country\u2019s consumers<\/a> while recognising the benefits accruing to farmers. Higher palm oil prices may spur the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90716324\/palm-oil-is-one-of-the-most-destructive-ingredients-you-use-every-day-these-startups-are-trying-to-replace-it\">search for alternatives<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>China Dialogue has a well-presented feature on <a href=\"https:\/\/chinadialogue.net\/en\/food\/from-palm-to-plate-tracing-sustainable-palm-oil-along-the-supply-chain\/\">palm oil sustainability<\/a>, focusing on Wilmar and the RSPO. Reuters has a long-read on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/malaysias-sabah-aims-win-big-worlds-first-green-palm-oil-state-2022-01-27\/\">sustainable palm oil<\/a> in Malaysia&#8217;s eastern state of Sabah. Swiss researchers have published the results of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opal-project.org\/\">the OPAL Project<\/a>, a six-year study into sustainable palm oil. The study focused on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opal-project.org\/highlights\/\">three oil palm growing countries<\/a>: Cameroon, Colombia, and Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Fox News worries that high <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/markets\/high-fertilizer-prices-could-mean-smaller-crops\">US fertiliser prices<\/a> will reduce production this season. They write that a fertiliser bag that cost $11 in 2021 now sells for about $20. However, US wholesale fertiliser prices have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-21\/fertilizer-price-drop-may-signal-relief-at-last-for-u-s-farmers?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">fallen to levels<\/a> last seen last October. Things could change quickly if the world <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dtnpf.com\/agriculture\/web\/ag\/crops\/article\/2022\/01\/27\/russia-ukraine-conflict-cause-supply\">imposes sanctions<\/a> on Russia, a significant nitrogen, phosphorus, and potash exporter.<\/p>\n<p>India will allocate about 3 trillion rupees ($40 billion) on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/india\/exclusive-india-plans-over-40-billion-food-fertiliser-subsidy-202223-sources-2022-01-28\/\">food and fertiliser subsidies<\/a> in its budget for 2022\/23, roughly the same amount as in the fiscal year 2021\/22 ending March.<\/p>\n<p>Kula Bio, a Boston-based start-up, has raised $50 million to accelerate production for their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-27\/venture-firms-back-startup-behind-next-generation-nitrogen-fertilizer?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">next-generation nitrogen fertiliser<\/a> that uses bacteria to remove nitrogen from the air and deposit it in soil.<\/p>\n<p>In little-reported news, Sri Lanka\u2019s government will give about $200 million in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/1\/26\/sri-lanka-200-million-compensation-farmers-organic-crops-drive\">compensation<\/a> to the country\u2019s rice farmers whose crops failed under a botched scheme to establish the world\u2019s first 100-per cent organic farming nation. The government last year banned imports of agricultural chemicals leading to about a third of Sri Lanka\u2019s agricultural land being left dormant. It says that earlier studies have <a href=\"https:\/\/climatehealers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/JES-Rao.pdf\">underestimated<\/a> the environmental impact of livestock farming and have failed to include the negative impact of forests lost to animal agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>Greenpeace Brazil reports that up to <a href=\"https:\/\/planetsave.com\/2009\/01\/29\/80-percent-of-amazon-deforestation-stems-from-cattle-ranching-2\/\">80 per cent of deforestation<\/a> in the Amazon rainforest is due to cattle ranching. Storebrand, a $120bn Nordic asset manager, has placed ADM and Bunge on its \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/136e52d2-f681-4839-b535-31c28263866f\">observation list<\/a>\u201d for moving too slowly to eliminate deforestation risk from their supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>Human Rights Watch has written an open letter asking the EU Commission to include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2022\/01\/27\/eu-end-deforestation-protect-land-rights\">land rights<\/a> in their upcoming regulations restricting imports of any commodities that have contributed to deforestation.<\/p>\n<p>The Economist posted a video on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/the-economist\/videos\/\">LinkedIn<\/a> about alternative meat, but the FT wonders whether the demand for alt-meat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/996330d5-5ffc-4f35-b5f8-a18848433966\">has peaked<\/a>. After a 46 per cent rise in 2020, US sales of plant-based meat fell 0.5 per cent in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese government has released its official Five-Year Agricultural Plan (in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moa.gov.cn\/govpublic\/KJJYS\/202112\/P020220106615353271383.pdf\">mandarin<\/a>). It mentions cultivated meat for the first time and suggests that <a href=\"https:\/\/vegconomist.com\/cultivated\/five-year-agricultural-plan\/\">producing it<\/a> is in the national interest.<\/p>\n<p>The EU has implemented a <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/eli\/reg\/2019\/6\/oj\">ban on giving antibiotics<\/a> to healthy animals. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/jan\/28\/uk-risks-falling-behind-on-reducing-farm-antibiotics-after-eu-ban?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other\">The Guardian is upset<\/a> that the UK has not done the same.<\/p>\n<p>A new <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0261976\">study<\/a> finds that climate change will make it harder for farmers to grow coffee, cashew, and avocado. CNN is particularly concerned about what that might mean for <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/01\/26\/business\/coffee-climate-change\/index.html\">coffee lovers<\/a>. You can find the BBC\u2019s take on the report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-60141387\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>China has published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/china-drafts-new-rules-allow-gene-edited-crops-2022-01-25\/\">draft rules<\/a> for gene-edited plants. It could now take only a year or two to get approval for a gene-edited plant compared with around six years for GM ones. Last November, Beijing passed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/china-gmo-regulations-idINKBN2HZ0D3\">new regulations<\/a> for genetically modified (GM)crops.<\/p>\n<p>Nestl\u00e9 has announced a major \u2013 perhaps game-changing &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/46ee0d7d-b25a-4604-a925-53a90eecd769?shareType=nongift\">initiative<\/a> in cocoa sourcing. The company will triple its cocoa sustainability funding to $1.4 billion over eight years, including direct pay-outs to African cocoa farmers to remove child labour from its supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>ADM reported a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/adm-quarterly-profit-jumps-138-2022-01-25\/\">record fourth-quarter profit<\/a> and said it would continue to benefit from solid demand for crops and biofuel in 2022. ADM&#8217;s net earnings rose to $782 million in the quarter ended Dec. 31, up from $687 million a year earlier. The investment is part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/01\/25\/walmart-makes-an-investment-in-vertical-farming-start-up-plenty.html\">$400 million funding<\/a> round.<\/p>\n<p>In shipping news, MSC, the world\u2019s largest container-shipping company, is looking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swissinfo.ch\/eng\/the-world-s-largest-container-line-makes-a-play-for-italian-air-carrier\/47289784\">to buy ITA Airways<\/a>, the successor to the defunct Alitalia. The transaction would have a value of between 1.2 and 1.5 billion euros. Lufthansa would act as an industrial partner.<\/p>\n<p>Maersk has announced plans to launch an <a href=\"https:\/\/gcaptain.com\/maersk-supply-service-launches-new-offshore-charging-station-company\/\">offshore vessel-charging company<\/a> to support the maritime industry\u2019s decarbonisation efforts by eliminating idle emissions.
