Cargill estimates US carryout stocks are \u201csignificantly lower\u201d than USDA\u2019s figures and feels that 27 to 28 million mt of S. American soybean production have been lost.<\/p>\n<p>Dry weather and little hope of significant rains in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/argentina-farm-belt-drought-awakens-ghost-2018-soybean-disaster-2022-02-10\/\">Argentina&#8217;s soy belt<\/a> are igniting fears of a repeat of 2018 when drought drove the harvest to below 38 million mt. The current forecast is for 40.5 million mt.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese importers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-17\/china-soy-buyers-walk-away-from-brazilian-cargoes-as-prices-soar?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">have washed out about ten cargoes<\/a> of Brazilian beans in the past week as several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agricensus.com\/Article\/China-s-oil-plants-shut-down-because-of-soybean-shortage-industry-sources-20752.html\">soybean crushing plants in China<\/a> have suspended operations due to poor\/negative margins.<\/p>\n<p>After a fire broke out, Louis Dreyfus briefly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/louis-dreyfus-reports-fire-largest-us-soy-processing-plant-2022-02-16\/\">suspended operations<\/a> at its Claypool, Indiana, soybean processing and biodiesel plant. No employees were injured, and the fire was quickly extinguished.<\/p>\n<p>The first two months of 2022 are the <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/environment\/2022\/02\/california-drought-record-january-february\/\">driest January and February<\/a> in Californian history, prompting state officials to warn of dire water shortages. The drought in <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/videos\/weather\/2022\/02\/14\/southern-california-extreme-drought-elam-dnt-lead-vpx.cnn\">the western US<\/a> is the worst in at least 1,200 years<\/p>\n<p>California is looking to reduce methane emissions by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedenverchannel.com\/news\/national\/from-landfills-to-the-soil-california-food-waste-law-aims-to-reduce-methane-emissions\">cutting food waste<\/a>. It accounts for 20 per cent of the state\u2019s methane emissions, third behind dairy manure and cow burbs. Meanwhile, European farmers are increasingly looking at opportunities to use their <a href=\"https:\/\/sifted.eu\/articles\/agreena-farms-carbon-sink-soil\/\">soils as carbon sinks<\/a> as various startups enter the sector.<\/p>\n<p>The USDA has restarted its avocado inspection program in Mexico, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/aphis\/newsroom\/stakeholder-info\/sa_by_date\/sa-2022\/avocado-imports-mexico\">avocado exports<\/a> to the US have resumed. The USDA had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox5atlanta.com\/news\/us-suspends-avocado-imports-from-mexico\">earlier suspended imports<\/a> after a US plant safety inspector received a threat. Activists claim that Mexico\u2019s avocado producers must pay <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mexico-avocado-sustainability-boycotts-96221af0b6a95d0596a8bad3df42dea9\">protection money<\/a> to drug cartels.<\/p>\n<p>India will extend a reduction in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2022\/2\/14\/india-cuts-tax-on-palm-oil-imports-to-help-consumers-refiners\">customs duty on edible oils<\/a> to the end of September. India has also cut its tax on crude palm oil imports to 5 per cent from 7.5 per cent. The carrier returned to the black in Q3 2020 after being on the brink of bankruptcy.<\/p>\n<p>The European Association for Forwarding, Transport, Logistics and Customs Services (CLECAT) has sent <a href=\"https:\/\/splash247.com\/european-commission-urged-to-investigate-liners-over-their-unfair-and-discriminatory-practices\/\">a letter to the EU Commission<\/a>, asking for an investigation into the container shipping sector, alleging unfair and discriminatory practices.<\/p>\n<p>A new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessfornature.org\/news\/subsidy-reform\">study<\/a> estimates that the world spends at least $1.8 trillion a year on subsidies that contribute to ecosystem destruction and species extinction. Of that amount, $520 billion goes to agriculture and $155 billion to forestry. The Guardian asks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/feb\/17\/harmful-subsidies-why-is-the-world-still-funding-the-destruction-of-nature-aoe\">why the world is still funding the destruction<\/a> of nature through misdirected and unthought out farm subsidies.<\/p>\n<p>Another new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/119\/9\/e2101084119\">study<\/a> argues that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/breakingviews\/electric-vehicles-run-over-ethanol-gas-2022-02-15\/\">ethanol<\/a> is 24 per cent more carbon-intensive than gasoline due to emissions from land-use changes, along with processing and combustion. The US RFA said the study was &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/us-corn-based-ethanol-worse-climate-than-gasoline-study-finds-2022-02-14\/\">completely fictional and erroneous<\/a>&#8221; and the authors used &#8220;worst-case assumptions [and] cherry-picked data.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>US biofuel producers have asked Congress for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/sustainable-business\/biofuel-producers-urge-congress-review-lower-carbon-aviation-fuel-tax-credits-2022-02-15\/\">tax credits<\/a> under the Build Back Better program to help boost the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).<\/p>\n<p>After surging 53 per cent in 2020, sales of plant-based meats increased only 1 per cent in 2021. Bloomberg looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-16\/plant-based-fake-meat-goes-into-stealth-mode-after-flatlining-in-supermarkets?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">how the sector is reacting<\/a> by collaborating with processed food producers.<\/p>\n<p>Bayer has declared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agweb.com\/news\/crops\/crop-production\/bayer-declares-force-majeure-says-production-glyphosate-may-be-curtailed\">force majeure<\/a> on sales of glyphosate to industrial customers after a critical supplier ran into manufacturing problems. Repairs at the supplier could take about three months.<\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg Green has an interesting article on Chinese gene-edited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-19\/chinese-scientists-discover-how-to-grow-seawater-rice?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">seawater rice<\/a>. It\u2019s more resistant to saline and alkali than standard rice varieties \u2013 and has a slightly higher yield. Meanwhile, researchers have developed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/gene-edited-wheat-resists-dreaded-fungus-without-pesticides\">gene-edited wheat<\/a> resistant to powdery mildew, one of the most damaging pathogens for wheat farmers.<\/p>\n<p>Nestl\u00e9 has reported its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/003c26ce-ee5f-4a71-8828-dea2b6224c2d\">strongest growth<\/a> in developed markets in a decade. Sales rose 7.5 per cent, with a 2-percentage point rise coming from price increases. Coffee was the most significant contributor to growth.
