We should never take it for granted.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Commodity exports from the Black Sea have been thrown into chaos after Russia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/food-metal-shipments-left-stranded-182502056.html\">invasion forced ports and railways to close<\/a>. Ships loading in Ukraine have been told they will be allowed to leave, but those waiting to berth can\u2019t dock. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-24\/cargill-say-ship-it-chartered-was-hit-while-in-ukraine-waters?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">missile hit a vessel<\/a> in Ukrainian waters but sailed into Rumanian waters unaided. At least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/cargo-ship-namura-queen-hit-by-rocket-off-ukraine-local-agent-2022-02-25\/\">one other ship<\/a> has suffered damage.<\/p>\n<p>Bunge and ADM have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agricensus.com\/Article\/Bunge-suspends-Ukraine-operations-after-Russian-invasion-20842.html\">suspended operations<\/a> in Ukraine following the invasion, and some European banks have imposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-24\/ing-curbs-commodity-lending-after-russia-attacks-ukraine?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">restrictions<\/a> on commodity-trade finance linked to Russia and Ukraine. At least two of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-25\/chinese-state-banks-restrict-financing-for-russian-commodities?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">China\u2019s largest state-owned banks<\/a> are also restricting financing for Chinese purchases of Russian commodities.<\/p>\n<p>Chicago corn and wheat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-24\/food-inflation-risks-balloon-as-prices-of-wheat-to-palm-oil-soar?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">prices surged<\/a> following the invasion, and analysts worry that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-24\/-the-sky-s-the-limit-food-inflation-set-to-worsen-on-ukraine?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">sky is now the limit<\/a> for food inflation. Unsurprisingly, investors are pumping <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/inflation-obsessed-investors-t-enough-101202674.html#:~:text=(Bloomberg)%20%2D%2D%20Investors%20are%20pumping,futures%20market%20offering%20big%20profits.\">more money into commodity funds<\/a> than at any time in the last decade.<\/p>\n<p>China <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/02\/25\/business\/wheat-russia-china-intl-hnk\/index.html\">confirmed that it had lifted restrictions<\/a> on the imports of Russian wheat, a decision taken before the winter Olympics in Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>Russia is a significant fertiliser <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-24\/nitrogen-fertilizer-prices-spike-after-russian-attack-on-ukraine?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">exporter,<\/a> and prices for nitrogen fertiliser in New Orleans surged 25 per cent following the invasion. Fertiliser <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-23\/russia-ukraine-tensions-spur-fears-of-fertilizer-shortages-food-price-hikes?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">shortages may hit the US growing season<\/a>, and the US Agriculture Secretary warned fertiliser companies against taking an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-24\/usda-chief-warns-fertilizer-firms-on-price-gouging-over-ukraine?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">unfair advantage<\/a>\u201d of the Ukraine conflict.<\/p>\n<p>A backlog of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-22\/vessels-sit-empty-for-weeks-waiting-for-delayed-brazil-soybeans?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">vessels waiting to load soybeans<\/a> from some Brazilian ports is stretching to near-record lengths, with some ships waiting for more than 40 days, significantly longer than the seven to 15 days that\u2019s typical. The financial terms of the transaction, first announced in September 2021, were not disclosed.<\/p>\n<p>The US EPA has told Reuters that it is committed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/us-epa-trying-get-biofuel-blending-law-track-grow-biofuel-use-epa-2022-02-22\/\">increasing the use of biofuels<\/a>, but the industry is still anxiously awaiting the administration to finalise specific blending goals.<\/p>\n<p>Hydrous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-24\/ethanol-sales-soar-in-brazil-and-russia-attack-may-further-trend?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">ethanol sales<\/a> in the Center-South region of Brazil rose 22 per cent in the first half of February compared with the same period a month earlier, a trend that may continue with energy prices rising.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond Meat is not real meat, but it <a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4489000-beyond-meat-ron-swanson-does-not-approve\">bleeds<\/a> cash. Morgan called Beyond Meat \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.agweb.com\/news\/livestock\/beef\/fake-meat-bleeding-money#:~:text=There's%20no%20animal%20blood%20on,company%20have%20seen%20losses%20mounting.\">the worst performer<\/a> in our universe in the last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Draft new rules (seen by Bloomberg) would allow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-21\/unethical-firms-risk-massive-bills-in-eu-supply-chain-crackdown?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">victims to sue for compensation<\/a> in a proposed EU crackdown on human rights abuses and environmental breaches in supply chains. Right on cue, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2022\/02\/good-corporate-governance-and-a-sustainable-future-the-role-of-mandatory-human-rights-and-environmental-due-diligence\/\">World Economic Forum writes<\/a> that mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence are now essential for any business.<\/p>\n<p>Ivory Coast\u2019s cocoa regulator, Le Conseil du Cafe-Cacao, plans to start a pilot program in April to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-23\/top-cocoa-grower-ivory-coast-to-start-program-for-tracing-beans?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">trace cocoa from plantation to ports<\/a>. For years, agronomists have told cocoa and coffee farmers in West Africa to uproot trees from their fields. This <a href=\"https:\/\/revoir.tv5monde.com\/toutes-les-videos\/documentaires\/l-arbre-providence-arbre-providence-l-2021-rtbf\">video<\/a> (in French) argues that advice is misguided and explains how trees fertilise and protect surrounding crops.<\/p>\n<p>The Inter-American Development Bank has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-23\/big-beef-loan-shelved-amid-uproar-over-amazon-deforestation?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">shelved a plan<\/a> to lead a $200 million syndicated loan for Marfrig Global Foods amid growing concern over deforestation in the Amazon.<\/p>\n<p>The US and the UAE are seeking an additional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/cop\/exclusive-us-uae-push-another-4bln-farming-climate-change-investment-2022-02-20\/\">$4 billion investment<\/a> for the Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aimforclimate.org\/\">AIM for Climate<\/a>) on top of the $4 billion that they agreed when they launched the initiative last November.<\/p>\n<p>The sustainability charity Wrap has asked supermarkets to stop selling fresh produce in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/feb\/24\/plastic-packaging-increases-fresh-food-waste-study-finds\">plastic packaging<\/a>. They argue that it does not make them last longer and adds to pollution and food waste. Next week, world governments will gather in Nairobi to discuss a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/feb\/25\/plastic-summit-could-be-most-important-green-deal-since-paris-accords-says-un\">global treaty to combat plastic waste<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The UK\u2019s National Farming Union President has warned that farmers in England and Wales \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/feb\/22\/farmers-toughest-times-generation-england-wales-\">face toughest times in a generation\u2019<\/a>.
