No financial details were given. \u00a0The acquisition will enable Wilmar, which was the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novacana.com\/n\/acucar\/exportacao\/ranking-maiores-compradoras-acucar-brasileiro-2018-wilmar-lider-210818\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chief buyer of Brazilian sugar exports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this year, to continue its global expansion. Bunge, on the other hand, had earlier said it was also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/wilmar-bunge-sugar\/update-1-wilmar-scoops-up-rival-bunges-sugar-trading-operations-idUSL3N1VD466\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">planning to sell its sugar production operations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Brazil, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodieselmagazine.com\/articles\/2516446\/adm-to-acquire-brazilian-oilseed-facilities-from-algar-agro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADM announced it will buy Algar Agro&#8217;s oilseeds refining and bottling plants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as its origination and storage silos. ADM said it was now \u201cthe most diversified oilseeds processor in the world.\u201d Algar said it was getting out of the soybean crushing and trading businesses to focus on producing grains. ADM also concluded the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.feedstuffs.com\/news\/adm-completes-probiotics-international-acquisition\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">takeover of probiotic supplements company Probiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> International. The new company &#8211; which will be known as ADM Protexin &#8211; will add to ADM&#8217;s health and wellness business. In Atlantic, meanwhile, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.powderbulksolids.com\/news\/ADM-Sells-Iowa-Grain-Elevator-to-Pipeline-Foods-08-20-2018\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADM sold a grain elevator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Pipeline Foods, which focuses on non-GMO and organic supply chain solutions. The group explained that the elevator would give them direct access to farmers and therefore improve transparency and traceability in their supply chain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.undercurrentnews.com\/2018\/08\/20\/cargill-sees-agrosuper-aquachile-deal-as-threat-on-salmon-feed-benefit-for-sector-overall\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cargill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said it was looking at expanding its salmon and shrimp feed business further downstream into farming. The aim would be to extend throughout the seafood value chain from feed to consumers directly. In the meanwhile, Cargill continues to expand its feed business. It has tied up with a farmer in Ecuador to test a new feed plant. Back in the US, Cargill Animal Nutrition has kickstarted a Facebook campaign to promote <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agdaily.com\/news\/cargill-facebook-campaign-milk-drive\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Great American Milk Drive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The company will give three servings of milk to the Drive for every farmer who uses the HerdFirst Facebook frame and tells his story of caring for dairy animal along with the hashtag #putyourherdfirst. The Herdfirst initiative aims to encourage dairy farmers to balance the nutritional needs of young animals with their business requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ikar.ru\/eng\/press.php?id=2041\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russia is leasing out 1 million ha of farmland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to foreign investors, about half of which are likely to be from China which is looking for land to grow soybeans after its spat with the US. With this, there is now about 3 million ha in the Far Eastern Federal District available for dairy farming, cultivating soybeans, wheat and potatoes among other crops. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sustainability advocacy group As You Sow has started a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mhlnews.com\/global-supply-chain\/consumers-demand-supply-chain-accountability-down-last-straw\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">global alliance of investors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> whose aim is to put pressure on major companies to reduce plastic waste. Investors representing USD 1 trillion of asset management have signed up. This comes at a time when Greenpeace found that while US supermarkets have made significant efforts to ensure the seafood they offer is sustainable there have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumeraffairs.com\/news\/greenpeace-says-supermarkets-have-improved-seafood-sustainability-081518.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no improvements to reduce the consumption of single-use plastics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As You Sow argued that pollution and sustainability issues were a brand &#8211; and therefore a business &#8211; risk. One telling example was the case of beverage group Monster Energy Drink. Earlier this year, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freedomunited.org\/advocate\/monster-slavery\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">petition was signed by consumers <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">threatening to switch to another brand if the group did not improve supply chain transparency. This happened after Monster was ranked among the worst performers for supply chain accountability. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We talked a lot about agriculture and chemicals this week (see previous posts <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/commodityconversations.com\/wordpress2\/popular-posts\/blog\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The latest is a US study which found significant levels of the weedkiller <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2018\/aug\/16\/weedkiller-cereal-monsanto-roundup-childrens-food\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glyphosate in several brands of breakfast cereals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, oats and snack bars which are marketed for children.
