Vegetable oil and grain prices dropped, while meat and dairy prices increased.<\/p>\n<p>Up to 20 million people could go <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/081ac952-48a0-4f67-a597-16b4a98921ba\">hungry<\/a> this year In the Horn of Africa as delayed rains exacerbate the worst drought in four decades.<\/p>\n<p>Some people are asking if the world is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agweb.com\/news\/policy\/politics\/world-running-out-grain\">running out<\/a> of grain. \u00a0Although that is unlikely, Arab countries are building stocks and have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/brazil-commodities-sales-arab-nations-soar-importers-stock-up-food-2022-05-03\/\">increased<\/a> food shipments from Brazil. There is market talk that India could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-05-05\/wheat-extends-best-jump-in-3-weeks-as-india-weighs-export-curbs\">limit<\/a> wheat exports, hurting <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/india-curbs-wheat-exports-hurt-041649962.html\">neighbouring<\/a> countries the most.<\/p>\n<p>India <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/india\/after-five-record-crops-heat-wave-threatens-indias-wheat-output-export-plans-2022-05-02\/\">exported<\/a> a record 7.85 million tonnes in the fiscal year to March &#8211; up 275 per cent from the previous year, the government faces a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-05-07\/modi-faces-a-dilemma-keep-indian-voters-happy-or-feed-the-world?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">dilemma<\/a> this year as to whether to export any surplus or keep it at home to dampen inflation.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agweb.com\/opinion\/more-wheat-problems-french-crop-trouble\">French<\/a> wheat harvest could also face challenges., although the EU\u2019s Agriculture Commissioner <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_22_1963\">says<\/a> that \u201cthe EU itself does not face a food security risk\u201d. The FT <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8f2608d5-f35b-46f4-8479-1508a376d918\">disagrees<\/a>, arguing that shortages of diesel and fertiliser put production at risk. The FT also writes that Turkey\u2019s farmers face <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/f86c314d-cd73-4a4b-aceb-425c87fc76c6\">hard times<\/a> following the collapse of the Turkish lira and a surge in input costs.<\/p>\n<p>As of 5<sup>th<\/sup> May, Ukrainian farmers had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agricensus.com\/Article\/Ukrainian-sowing-of-spring-crops-has-reached-50-complete-22012.html#:~:text=Ukrainian%20sowing%20of%20spring%20crops%20reached%20the%20half%20way%20mark,from%20the%20country's%20agriculture%20ministry.\">sown<\/a> 7.1 million hectares, about half of their forecast acreage. Spring wheat planting is now 97 per cent complete, compared to 89 per cent on the same date last year. Even so, satellite images suggest that the country\u2019s wheat crop could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/may\/06\/ukraine-wheat-harvest-may-fall-by-35-percent-satellite-images-suggest\">fall<\/a> by 35 per cent compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine has accused Russian forces of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/ukraine-says-russia-stole-several-hundred-thousand-tonnes-grain-2022-04-30\/\">stealing<\/a> &#8220;several hundred thousand tonnes&#8221; of grain in the areas of Ukraine they occupy. There have been unconfirmed reports that stolen grain is being exported from Russian ports.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine could have a significant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/ukraine-faces-grain-harvest-storage-crunch-exports-struggle-2022-05-03\/\">shortage<\/a> of storage facilities due to a sharp fall in exports. At the end of the current season, oilseeds stocks might reach an all-time high of 21.3 mln mt.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Ukraine hopes to<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/ukraine-hopes-boost-export-capacity-by-50-coming-months-2022-05-06\/\">grow<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">export capacity by 50 per cent in the next few months by expanding facilities on its western border, but it will still be far short of pre-war levels. The country exported 3.5 mln mt of cargo by rail last month. <\/span>The UN FAO says that 25 mln mt of grain are stuck in Ukraine it doesn\u2019t know when it can be accessed. The BBC believes that the war in Ukraine and the Indonesian export ban are \u201ca <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-india-61229607\">wake-up<\/a> call\u201d for India. However, India\u2019s government says they are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siasat.com\/no-shortage-of-palm-oil-due-to-indonesias-export-ban-govt-2320588\/\">not worried<\/a> about the export ban as the country has adequate stocks, and Indonesia has \u201cno option other than export.\u201d (The EU also says it has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/2075561\/business-economy\">enough supplies<\/a> to ride out the ban.)<\/p>\n<p>Malaysian palm oil production should pick up with workers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-05-05\/palm-retreats-from-record-on-signs-malaysian-output-to-rebound\">returning<\/a> to plantations as the Ramadan season winds down. <span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Malaysia\u2019s domestic palm oil stocks are<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theedgemarkets.com\/article\/malaysias-endapril-palm-oil-stockpile-seen-first-time-six-months\">rising<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">The Indonesian government\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Opinion\/Indonesia-s-palm-oil-crisis-pushes-Jokowi-administration-to-the-edge\">vegoil policy<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">measures are testing the country\u2019s patience. <\/span>Indonesia <a href=\"https:\/\/asiatimes.com\/2022\/05\/indonesias-flip-flops-on-palm-oil-come-under-fire\/\">earned<\/a> US$35.5 billion from 26.9 million tonnes in total palm oil exports last year, the most important markets being China (4.7 mln mt), the European Union (4.0 mln mt), India (3.03 mln mt), and Pakistan (1.6 mln mt).<\/p>\n<p>Analysts expect fertiliser makers to post their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/fertilizer-sector-set-biggest-profits-years-russia-ukraine-conflict-2022-05-02\/\">biggest quarterly profits<\/a> in years. They warn that supply disruptions could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-05-03\/top-fertilizer-maker-nutrien-sees-market-chaos-beyond-2022\">extend<\/a> beyond 2022 and could even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/05\/06\/fertilizer-prices-food-securtiy\">worsen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Vietnam\u2019s coffee production may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-05-04\/avocados-and-durians-help-coffee-farmers-cope-with-surging-costs?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">fall ten per cent<\/a> this year as farmers plant more profitable crops like avocados, black pepper and durians, helping them cope with the high fertiliser and fuel costs.<\/p>\n<p>Australia\u2019s biggest investment bank Macquarie Group saw full-year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/052d64b3-6c6c-4ce0-be80-b5b539e4e454\">net profit<\/a> up 56 per cent from the previous year to a record A$4.7bn ($3.3bn). Commodity earnings were up 50 per cent to A$3.9bn.<\/p>\n<p>Maersk <a href=\"https:\/\/gcaptain.com\/maersk-best-earnings-quarter-q1\/\">reported<\/a> its best earnings quarter ever in Q1 2022 with a 55 per cent increase in revenue to $19.3 billion. EBITDA more than doubled to a record $9.1 billion. The company\u2019s CEO told Bloomberg that it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/videos\/2022-05-04\/maersk-ceo-counts-the-cost-of-russia-exit-video?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">wrote down<\/a> more than $700 million as the transport giant counts the cost of exiting Russia. Cargill and General Mills, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/tcbmag.com\/why-cargill-and-general-mills-are-still-doing-business-in-russia\/\">continue<\/a> to do business in Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Drewry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2022-05-04\/supply-chain-latest-maersk-sheds-its-assets-in-russia?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">estimates<\/a> the world\u2019s container-line industry may make $300 billion in profits this year, up from $214 billion in 2021, before the windfall settles back to around $100 billion next year.<\/p>\n<p>But even as container shipping companies report record profits, the cost of new containers is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freightwaves.com\/news\/demand-for-container-equipment-is-falling-transitory-or-turning-point\">falling<\/a>. Some suggest that this indicates a tipping point (Container <a href=\"https:\/\/theloadstar.com\/box-ship-charter-market-heated-for-so-long-shows-signs-of-cooling\/\">ship charter rates<\/a> are also cooling.) Meanwhile, thousands of containers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-04-01\/thousands-of-russia-linked-ship-containers-pile-up-in-rotterdam\">piling<\/a> up in Rotterdam Port because of the sanctions on Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Half a tonne of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/over-500-kg-cocaine-found-coffee-delivery-nespresso-2022-05-05\">cocaine<\/a> has been found in a container of coffee bean bags at a Nespresso factory in Switzerland. Europe is increasingly becoming a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/europe-turns-into-cocaine-hub-multi-billion-euro-market-expands-eu-says-2022-05-06\">hub<\/a> for the production and transhipment of cocaine. (<a href=\"https:\/\/commodityconversations.com\/wordpress2\/2019\/04\/29\/rip-on-rip-off\/\">Drugs<\/a> have been turning up in commodity shipments for some time now.)<\/p>\n<p>Louis Dreyfus has used a B30 biofuel-blended <a href=\"https:\/\/biodieselmagazine.com\/articles\/2518111\/louis-dreyfus-successfully-completes-b30-trial\">marine fuel<\/a> for the first time to sail from LDC\u2019s orange juice terminal in Ghent, Belgium, to LDC\u2019s terminal in Santos, Brazil, and back again.<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization has declared an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euro.who.int\/en\/health-topics\/noncommunicable-diseases\/obesity\/publications\/2022\/who-european-regional-obesity-report-2022\">obesity epidemic<\/a>\u201d in Europe after finding that 59 per cent of the continent\u2019s adults are overweight. Turkey and the UK are among Europe\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-05-03\/obesity-rates-have-increased-in-europe-led-by-turkey-u-k\">fattest<\/a> countries.
