He demanded that Russia lift its blockade of Ukraine\u2019s Black Sea ports to enable the flow of food and fertiliser around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy chairman of Russia\u2019s security council, a former president of Russia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/world-news\/insane-sanctions-or-food-supplies-russia-tells-west-101652998007637.html\">replied<\/a> that Russia would not lift the blockade unless the west eased its sanctions on the Kremlin. \u201cCountries importing our wheat and other food products will have a very difficult time without supplies from Russia. And on European and other fields, only juicy weeds will grow without our fertilisers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Germany\u2019s Foreign Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/05\/17\/politics\/us-ukraine-grain\/index.html\">countered<\/a>, &#8220;We must not be naive. Russia has now expanded the war against Ukraine to many states as a war of grain. It is not collateral damage; it is an instrument in a hybrid war intended to weaken cohesion against Russia&#8217;s war.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine is trying to find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8151ba97-5c07-4cef-9ad9-234c532b2481\">ways<\/a> around Russia\u2019s naval blockade, and the US is looking to end it by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/exclusive-us-aims-arm-ukraine-with-advanced-anti-ship-missiles-fight-russian-2022-05-19\">supplying<\/a> Ukraine with advanced anti-ship missiles.<\/p>\n<p>About 300,000 tonnes of Ukrainian wheat that Egypt&#8217;s General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC) bought for delivery in February and March is yet to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/exclusive-about-300000-tonnes-wheat-bought-by-egypt-stranded-ukraine-trade-2022-05-17\/\">shipped<\/a>, with one cargo stuck in port and four others still to be loaded. Farmers in North Dakota have planted 8 per cent of their wheat, while farmers in South Dakota have planted 60 per cent. Last year by this week, South Dakota had 90 per cent of its crop in the ground.<\/p>\n<p>French farmers are becoming increasingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/environment\/20220519-france-s-crop-yields-will-be-very-poor-due-to-unprecedented-drought\">pessimistic<\/a> over the prospects for their wheat harvest, and their crop is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-05-20\/french-wheat-ratings-plunge-with-nation-set-for-hottest-ever-may\">deteriorating<\/a> fast. India\u2019s Agriculture Ministry has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/india\/india-slashes-wheat-output-estimate-by-44-heat-wave-dents-yields-2022-05-19\/\">reduced<\/a> its 2022 wheat production estimate from 111.32 mln mt to 106.41 mln mt.<\/p>\n<p>The President of AgResource told a conference in Geneva that global milling wheat supply in the 2022-23 marketing year (July-June) could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.argusmedia.com\/en\/news\/2333087-lack-of-milling-wheat-may-turn-millers-to-feed-grade\">fall short<\/a> of demand by ten mln mt. He suggests that large milling wheat-consuming countries could use feed wheat for milling.<\/p>\n<p>Although India has banned commercial wheat exports, the country has reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agricensus.com\/Article\/India-sells-500k-mt-to-Egypt-on-state-to-state-basis-following-export-ban-22193.html#:~:text=India%20has%20reportedly%20sold%20500%2C000,government%2Dto%2Dgovernment%20deals.\">sold<\/a> 500,000 mt of wheat to Egypt. The Egyptian government says the Indian ban does not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/egypt-agrees-buy-half-mln-tonnes-indian-wheat-supply-minister-2022-05-15\/\">apply<\/a> to them. Turkey\u2019s Agriculture Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hurriyetdailynews.com\/turkey-not-importing-wheat-from-india-says-ministry-173823\">reassured<\/a> citizens that India\u2019s ban would not affect them because the country imports wheat only to produce flour and pasta for export. The Sultanate of Oman has said it will <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofoman.com\/article\/116878-oman-may-import-wheat-from-australia-and-argentina\">replace<\/a> Indian purchases with wheat from Australia and Argentina.<\/p>\n<p>India\u2019s government considers allowing traders to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/india\/india-considers-allowing-wheat-shipments-trapped-ports-2022-05-19\/\">ship<\/a> an estimated 1.8 million tonnes of the grain trapped at the ports by the ban. Reuters has a good explainer on why Indonesia\u2019s export ban has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/why-indonesias-palm-oil-export-ban-has-not-cooled-cooking-oil-prices-2022-05-17\/\">failed<\/a> to dampen domestic vegoil prices, while Bloomberg looks at what the end of the ban might <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-05-19\/palm-oil-s-slump-set-to-deepen-after-indonesia-lifts-export-ban\">mean<\/a> for world prices.<\/p>\n<p>Higher vegetable oil prices threaten to <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/05\/16\/business-food\/fish-and-chips-britain-inflation\/index.html\">drive<\/a> one-third of the UK\u2019s fish and chip shops out of business.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia\u2019s Finance Ministry is still thinking about temporarily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/malaysia-ministry-says-decision-pending-proposed-cut-palm-oil-export-tax-2022-05-20\/\">cutting<\/a> the country\u2019s tax on crude palm oil export to 4-6 per cent from the current 8 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Iraq is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokpost.com\/business\/2310562\/rising-domestic-rice-prices-unsettle-thai-exporters\">buying<\/a> Thai rice again after halting its imports for many years, increasing Thailand\u2019s domestic rice prices and raising questions over export availability later in the year. And the recent drought has led to a shortage of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-61529874\">mustard<\/a> in France.<\/p>\n<p>South Brazil\u2019s sugar millers have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/brazil-mills-cancel-sugar-export-contracts-shift-output-ethanol-2022-05-17\/\">bought<\/a> back an estimated 200-400,000 mt of sugar to produce ethanol instead.<\/p>\n<p>The US is trying to decide whether it should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/us\/white-house-weighs-inflation-vs-farmers-new-biofuel-mandates-2022-05-16\/\">adjust<\/a> domestic biofuel policies in the face of the crisis. In Europe, the German government is considering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/agriculture-food\/news\/german-government-mulls-limiting-biofuel-production\/\">reducing<\/a> the production of biofuels made from grain or oilseeds.<\/p>\n<p>The USDA released plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmprogress.com\/farm-policy\/fsa-announces-6b-crop-disaster-payments\">distribute<\/a> an estimated $6 billion to US farmers in crop disaster payments under the new Emergency Relief Program to offset crop yield and value losses in 2020 and 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The global fertiliser shortage may prove the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/5\/16\/ukraine-war-global-fertilizer-crunch-pressures-brazils-amazon\">catalyst<\/a> that finally allows Brazil to mine for potassium in the Amazon basin. Mexico is also looking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/mexico-boost-fertilizer-production-support-local-farmers-2022-05-16\/\">boost<\/a> their domestic fertiliser production.<\/p>\n<p>Sri Lanka faces a food shortage following the government\u2019s decision in April last year to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/we-are-going-die-sri-lanka-warns-food-shortages-2022-05-20\">ban<\/a> the imports of chemical fertilisers. Although the government has reversed the ban, no substantial imports have yet taken place.<\/p>\n<p>In company news, Cargill announced plans for a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/cargill-to-build-new-soybean-processing-facility-in-southeast-missouri-301549102.html\">soybean<\/a> crushing plant in Missouri, and ADM has announced it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/4a035bbf-78dc-4a11-b66d-b9696543694c\">partnering<\/a> with California-based Eat Just, a lab-grown meat start-up.<\/p>\n<p>US consumer food prices rose 9.4 per cent in April compared with a year earlier. Still, wholesale food prices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-05-18\/will-inflation-drive-us-food-prices-even-higher\">increased<\/a> 18 per cent from a year earlier, suggesting further consumer price increases are in the pipeline. Egg prices surged 220 per cent, butter jumped 51 per cent, and flour 40 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>A famous hedge fund manager <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/jim-rogers-says-one-commodity-131500856.html\">recommends<\/a> investing in commodities as a hedge against inflation, but this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcgroup.global\/hc-insider\/insights\/commodities-and-inflation-not-always-the-perfect-fit\">study<\/a> disagrees. If finds that commodities and inflation are not always the perfect fit.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian argues that one solution to rising food prices would be for all of us to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/food\/2022\/may\/19\/food-prices-inflation-farmers-grow-more-produce\">grow<\/a> more of our food. Bloomberg takes a more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2022-05-12\/famine-could-be-prevented-by-sustainable-agriculture?sref=DGDhw0Nx\">realistic<\/a> approach to the problem, but the Guardian doubles down, arguing that the world food system is on the verge of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2022\/may\/19\/banks-collapsed-in-2008-food-system-same-producers-regulators\">collapse<\/a>, just as the world financial system collapsed in 2008. The writer cites a 2012 Oxfam <a href=\"https:\/\/www-cdn.oxfam.org\/s3fs-public\/file_attachments\/rr-cereal-secrets-grain-traders-agriculture-30082012-en_4.pdf\">report<\/a> that \u201cjust four corporations control 90 per cent of the global grain trade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rising food prices add to poverty, hunger, and political instability concerns.
