The index averaged 157.4 points last month versus 158.3 in April. In their biannual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/giews\/reports\/food-outlook\/en\/\">Food Outlook<\/a>, the FAO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-06-09\/global-food-import-bill-set-for-record-taking-toll-on-poorest\">warns<\/a> that the global food import bill will reach $1.81 trillion this year, up $51 billion from last year\u2019s all-time high.<\/p>\n<p>After jumping nearly two per cent last week, the Bloomberg Commodity Spot Index, which tracks prices for 23 raw materials, is up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-06-06\/raw-material-gauge-soars-to-fresh-record-amid-supply-crunch\">36 per cent<\/a> this year. The latest move was primarily driven by a jump in natural gas and wheat.<\/p>\n<p>The FT has an excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b424067e-f56b-4e49-ac34-5b3de07e7f08\">article<\/a> on the developing food versus fuel debate (battle). The farming lobby is struggling to counter renewed attacks from the carbon fuel lobby.<\/p>\n<p>With Ukrainian grain silos about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/ukraine-grain-silos-half-full-ahead-harvest-exports-remain-stalled-2022-06-08\/\">half full<\/a> in the run-up to this year&#8217;s harvest, the Kremlin reiterated its stance that it will only allow the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/kremlin-says-sanctions-must-be-lifted-russian-grain-reach-markets-2022-06-08\/\">resumption<\/a> of Ukrainian grain exports once the West lifts all sanctions. A US official says there is evidence that Russia is <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/ukrainian-grain-leaving-ports-russian-ships-us-official\/story\">exporting<\/a> Ukrainian grain. A journalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/jun\/09\/ukrainian-journalist-confronts-russias-sergei-lavrov-with-grain-theft-claim\">confronted<\/a> Russia\u2019s Foreign Minister on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian ambassador <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/russian-ambassador-storms-out-of-un-security-council-meeting-over-food-crisis-claim\">stormed<\/a> out of a meeting of the UN Security Council after an EU official accused Moscow of deliberately creating a global food crisis by blocking exports from Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian asks how Ukraine can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/jun\/07\/how-do-you-get-20m-tonnes-of-grain-out-of-ukraine\">export<\/a> 20 mln mt of grain if sea routes remain blocked. The newspaper fails to offer an effective solution. Bloomberg wonders whether the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2022-05-29\/food-inflation-news-danube-river-could-play-large-part-to-secure-vital-shipment\">rusty rail tracks<\/a> along the Danube might provide a solution.<\/p>\n<p>India has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/india-allows-small-amount-wheat-move-out-after-ban-big-stocks-still-stuck-2022-06-02\/\">exported<\/a> 469,202 mt of wheat since banning most exports last month. At least 1.7 mln mt of wheat is lying at ports and could be damaged by monsoon rains. Half a dozen countries, primarily Bangladesh and Egypt, have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/india\/india-asked-supply-more-than-15-mln-tonnes-wheat-2022-05-30\/\">asked India<\/a> to supply them with more than 1.5 mln mt of wheat.<\/p>\n<p>The first Indian wheat cargo sold to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agricensus.com\/Article\/First-Indian-wheat-cargo-clears-inspections-in-Egypt-22675.html#:~:text=The%20first%20Indian%20wheat%20cargo,inspections%2C%20trade%20sources%20said%20Thursday.\">Egypt<\/a> in late April has reached Alexandria and passed inspection. The Egyptian government says it has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/egypts-strategic-wheat-reserves-sufficient-until-end-this-year-supply-ministry-2022-06-08\/\">enough<\/a> wheat in state reserves to last until the end of this year but is looking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c5ba4b7d-76d7-42c6-aff3-8b6d5bf2e3b2\">increase<\/a> domestic wheat production.<\/p>\n<p>US crop production may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/us-wheat-crop-hit-by-dry-winter-then-soggy-spring-adding-global-tightness-2022-05-31\/\">disappoint<\/a> after a dry winter and wet spring in some key areas. (There are fears that this year\u2019s Atlantic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/la-nina-may-further-disrupt-commodity-markets-via-hurricanes-2022-06-08\/\">hurricane<\/a> season could complicate grain exports.) France\u2019s wheat crop still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agricensus.com\/Article\/France-on-alert-ahead-of-potential-drought-22558.html#:~:text=Despite%20the%20improvement%20in%20the,agency%20Franceagrimer%20in%20Friday's%20report.\">faces<\/a> a moisture deficit, while the prospect of a normal monsoon in India may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-05-31\/an-early-and-likely-normal-monsoon-boosts-india-s-crop-outlook\">encourage<\/a> farmers to increase acreage. China, meanwhile, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-05-30\/china-goes-all-out-to-harvest-wheat-to-blunt-inflation-threat\">working flat out<\/a> to bring in their harvest.<\/p>\n<p>The FAO warns that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/europe\/fertiliser-costs-could-prolong-global-food-tensions-fao-2022-06-09\/\">spiralling<\/a> input costs could deter farmers from expanding production. Farm input prices have increased more than food prices in the past year, suggesting lower actual returns.<\/p>\n<p>Russian restrictions on fertiliser exports could significantly <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/3513855-why-the-fertilizer-market-could-be-russias-hidden-leverage\/\">reduce<\/a> new crop production. Farmers are looking for alternatives. Extracting phosphorous from human sewage could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2022\/jun\/10\/phosphorus-sewage-fertlisers?\">become<\/a> economic if fertiliser prices stay high.<\/p>\n<p>Undeterred, Nutrien Ltd, the world&#8217;s largest fertilizer producer, said it will <a href=\"https:\/\/ca.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/fertilizer-producer-nutrien-boost-potash-125653395.html\">increase<\/a> its Canadian potash production by 20 per cent by 2025 to an annual 18 mln mt. (However, a glut of fertilizers at Brazilian ports may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-06-07\/fertilizers-piling-up-at-brazil-ports-signal-further-price-drop\">signal<\/a> fertiliser prices are peaking.)<\/p>\n<p>There are warnings of famine in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/sudanese-farmers-warn-failing-harvests-hunger-rises-2022-06-08\/\">Sudan<\/a> and throughout the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/widen-gaze-ukraine-avert-famine-somalia-un-agency-warns-2022-06-07\/\">Horn of Africa,<\/a> following the area\u2019s worst dry spell in forty years. The EU is worried that food shortages could provoke a surge in immigration and is considering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-05-31\/europe-considers-aid-plan-to-help-tackle-africa-food-crisis\">donating<\/a> about 500 million euros to Africa for food.<\/p>\n<p>Food will be on the agenda at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wto.org\/english\/thewto_e\/minist_e\/mc12_e\/mc12_e.htm\">WTO meeting<\/a> in Geneva this week (12<sup>th <\/sup>\u2013 15<sup>th<\/sup> June), although India is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-06-09\/india-seen-as-thwarting-g-7-push-to-avert-global-food-crisis\">expected<\/a> to block a deal to help the World Food Program buy food for humanitarian aid.<\/p>\n<p>An opinion piece in Aljazeera calls for the WTO to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/opinions\/2022\/6\/7\/more-free-trade-will-not-solve-the-food-crisis\">exclude agriculture<\/a> from free trade agreements to allow countries to become self-sufficient.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/indonesia-cut-maximum-palm-oil-export-tax-levy-combined-488t-trade-minister-2022-06-07\/\">reduce<\/a> its maximum crude palm oil export and levy rate from $575 to $488 per mt to encourage shipments. Since restarting exports, the country has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/indonesia-has-issued-around-302000-t-palm-oil-export-permits-official-2022-06-05\/\">issued<\/a> around 302,000 mt of export permits. India&#8217;s palm oil imports in May were their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/indias-may-palm-oil-imports-surge-7-month-high-despite-indonesias-ban-dealers-2022-06-06\/\">highest<\/a> in seven months despite the Indonesian export ban.<\/p>\n<p>Palm producers in Malaysia are dealing with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/malaysia-palm-group-warns-losses-ahead-severe-labour-crunch-2022-06-06\/\">shortage<\/a> of about 120,000 workers following Covid-related immigration restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>Avian flu has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-06-02\/bird-flu-brings-major-supply-gaps-in-jennie-o-turkey-this-summer\">affected<\/a> nearly 38 million birds in the US, hurting egg-laying hens and turkeys the most.<\/p>\n<p>A class-action lawsuit has been <a href=\"https:\/\/topclassactions.com\/lawsuit-settlements\/consumer-products\/food\/beyond-meat-lawsuit-alleges-company-makes-false-ingredient-claims\/\">filed<\/a> against Beyond Meat, alleging that the company makes false ingredient claims over the amount of protein in their products.<\/p>\n<p>Investors managing $14 trillion in assets have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/sustainable-business\/exclusive-global-investors-write-un-urge-global-plan-farming-emissions-2022-06-08\/\">written<\/a> to the UN asking for a global plan to reduce agriculture\u2019s GHG emissions. They note that food production accounts for a third of global GHG emissions and is the main threat to 86 per cent of the world&#8217;s species at risk of extinction.<\/p>\n<p>New Zealand has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/new-zealand-price-sheep-cow-burps-cut-greenhouse-gases-2022-06-08\/\">published<\/a> plans to have farmers pay for emissions from livestock. The country has 5 million people, 10 million cattle and 26 million sheep.<\/p>\n<p>In Australia, the prices for lettuces have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-06-07\/lettuce-surging-to-a-12-drives-kfc-to-put-cabbage-in-burgers\">spiked<\/a> after heavy rains along the west coast wiped out much of the crop.
