Activists said that the sum falls short of what is <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/g7-pledges-45-bln-fight-global-hunger-2022-06-28\/\">needed,<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> with millions of people on the brink of starvation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Germany and the UK pushed the G7 meeting for a temporary <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/germany-doesnt-see-biofuel-waiver-proposal-going-through-g7-source-2022-06-26\/\">waiver<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> on biofuel mandates, but the proposal didn\u2019t make it to the final communique.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The UN warns that the world faces an unprecedented <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/world-faces-unprecedented-global-hunger-crisis-un-chief-says-2022-06-24\/\">hunger<\/a> crisis, with a risk of multiple famines this year. There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/war-wild-weather-global-crop-problems-point-years-high-food-prices-2022-06-28\/\">worries<\/a> that global crop problems could result in years of high food prices.<\/p>\n<p>Talks continued this week to allow Ukraine to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/turkey-holds-key-to-unblocking-black-sea-grain-deal-ukraine-says\/\">restart<\/a> grain exports, but no one is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c1e64553-7451-4462-a9c4-8ec03f1d5536\">optimistic<\/a> about their outcome. Russia has accused the West of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/russia-says-west-is-spreading-lies-about-causes-worlds-food-crisis-2022-06-22\/\">lying<\/a> about the reasons for food shortages but at the same time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agricensus.com\/Article\/Ukraine-s-Mykolaiv-port-and-infrastructure-hit-again-in-Russian-attack-22911.html#:~:text=Ukraine's%20Mykolaiv%20port%20and%20infrastructure%20hit%20again%20in%20Russian%20attack,-22%20Jun%202022&amp;text=Ukraine's%20second%20biggest%20port%20of,missiles%2C%20according%20to%20local%20sources.\">bombed<\/a>\u00a0grain terminals in the Ukrainian port of Mykolaiv.<\/p>\n<p>Egypt has bought 180,000 mt of wheat from India and is looking to add <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/egypt-studies-raising-flour-extraction-875-82-used-subsidized-bread-2022-06-26\/\">potato flour<\/a> to subsidised bread. India is turning to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/humble-rice-bran-becomes-hot-commodity-india-scours-edible-oils-2022-06-24\/\">rice bran<\/a> for vegetable oil and animal feed.<\/p>\n<p>Parts of Italy are suffering their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/italys-drought-hit-farmers-face-sea-water-threat-2022-06-29\/\">worst drought<\/a> for 70 years, with saltwater incursion adding to farmers\u2019 problems. Heatwaves and fires <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/heat-wave-fires-damaging-tunisias-grain-harvest-2022-06-27\/\">threaten<\/a> Tunisia\u2019s grain harvest. Dry weather is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/with-world-short-wheat-argentina-farmers-worry-about-crop-2022-06-29\/\">impacting<\/a> crops in Argentina.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC reports that UK farmers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-61958468\">cutting production<\/a> due to high fuel and fertiliser input costs. \u00a0High fertiliser prices are an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-africa-61901074\">acute problem<\/a> in Africa, where up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c3336e46-b852-4f10-9716-e0f9645767c4\">20 million people<\/a> in the Horn of Africa could go hungry. Farm input shortages are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/off-charts-chemical-shortages-hit-us-farms-2022-06-27\/\">negatively<\/a> impacting production in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysian authorities are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/business\/business-news\/2022\/06\/28\/malaysia-urges-palm-oil-mills-to-resume-production-despite-price-drop\">encouraging<\/a> palm oil producers to keep supplying factories despite a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.malaysiakini.com\/news\/626279\">22 per cent drop<\/a> in palm prices over the past month. Times are also <a href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Economy\/Indonesian-palm-oil-farmers-see-a-bleak-future\">challenging<\/a> for Indonesian palm oil farmers.<\/p>\n<p>The US FDA has approved Argentine biotechnology firm Bioceres&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/argentinas-bioceres-says-its-gmo-wheat-gets-key-ok-us-fda-2022-06-27\/\">GM wheat<\/a>. The USDA still needs to approve the drought-resistant HB4 wheat before it can be sold in the US.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian writes that farmers \u201care <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/jun\/30\/us-food-production-climate-crisis-meat-monopoly-farming\">beholden<\/a> to a handful of big corporations who set commodity prices\u201d and \u201chave little leverage to implement more sustainable practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a separate article, the newspaper asks why we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2022\/jun\/30\/crops-cars-starving-biofuels-climate-sustainable\">feed crops<\/a> to our cars when people are starving. It cites a <a href=\"https:\/\/green-alliance.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Food-security-and-UK-crop-based-biofuel-use.pdf\">report<\/a> from the NGO Green Alliance.<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper also worries that climate change is responsible for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/jun\/28\/climate-crisis-food-shortages\">shortage<\/a> of (randomly) mustard, chilli peppers, coffee, and wine.<\/p>\n<p>On the good news front, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/jun\/27\/using-far-less-chemical-fertiliser-still-produces-high-crop-yields-study\">Guardian<\/a> cites a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41893-022-00911-x.epdf\">recent study<\/a> that shows farmers can achieve high yields with less fertiliser. The newspaper wonders whether \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/jun\/20\/peecycling-could-donating-your-urine-to-farmers-help-feed-the-world\">peecycling\u2019<\/a> could be a solution to the world fertiliser shortage. (Each of us produces enough pee a year to fertilise 145kg of wheat.)<\/p>\n<p>Research by the University of Cambridge finds that intensive farming may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/research\/news\/intensive-farming-may-actually-reduce-risk-of-pandemics-experts-argue\">reduce<\/a> the risks of pandemics.<\/p>\n<p>Nestl\u00e9 and Unilever have promised to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d0224863-6071-436d-a628-d7f3a71cb36f\">remove deforestation<\/a> from their supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the FT has an excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/e3f6a07d-3716-42d8-b45a-e066caeae28f\">review<\/a> of recent books looking to reinvent agriculture. They are all written by non-farmers (except for one writer who took up farming four years ago).
