In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/documents\/card\/en\/c\/cc0639en\">report<\/a>, the UN says the number of people going hungry worldwide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2022\/jul\/06\/global-hunger-toll-soars-by-150-million-as-covid-and-ukraine-war-make-their-mark\">rose<\/a> to 828 million last year, an increase of about 46 million from the previous year. The Guardian quotes the director of the UN World Food Programme as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2022\/jul\/06\/famine-what-is-it-where-will-it-strike-and-how-should-the-world-respond\">warning<\/a> that the food crisis will result in \u201cglobal destabilisation, starvation, and mass migration on an unprecedented scale.\u201d He adds that 50 million people in 45 countries are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/jul\/07\/un-hunger-crisis-ukraine-russia-blockade\">just one step<\/a> from famine.<\/p>\n<p>Africa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2022\/jul\/07\/fonio-indigenous-crops-africa-food-security\">indigenous<\/a> crops could be a long-term solution, but in the short term, Yemen is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/yemenis-hope-import-wheat-india-food-runs-low-minister-2022-07-07\/\">running<\/a> low on wheat and is pinning its hopes on imports from India.<\/p>\n<p>Brazilian fertilizer imports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/brazils-fertilizer-imports-jump-farmers-prepare-plant-new-crop-2022-07-01\/\">jumped<\/a> 18.6 per cent in June to reach 4.15 mln mt, suggesting that the country\u2019s farmers will have adequate supplies for summer crops.<\/p>\n<p>Turkey\u2019s president is close to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/black-sea-grain-deal-close-say-erdogan\/\">brokering<\/a> a deal between Russia and Ukraine to reopen Black Sea shipping lanes to grain exports from Ukraine (as opposed to Ukrainian grain exports from Russia).<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine is trying to convince Turkey to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/exclusive-kyiv-asks-turkey-probe-three-more-russian-ships-it-alleges-transported-2022-07-05\/\">arrest<\/a> vessels that it believes carry stolen grain. There were reports early in the week that Turkish authorities had detained one ship, but they have since allowed it to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/russian-foreign-ministry-says-turkey-hasnt-detained-grain-ship-2022-07-06\/\">leave<\/a> port. Ukraine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/jul\/07\/ukraine-summons-turkish-ambassador-over-stolen-grain-ship\">summoned<\/a> the Turkish ambassador to complain.<\/p>\n<p>The FT writes that annual food <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/aeac051e-9ab7-45e8-87a6-a728fc9a0f94\">inflation<\/a> in Turkey is 80 per cent. The newspaper warns, &#8220;There is no government that an empty cooking pot cannot bring down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s government has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agricensus.com\/Article\/Ukraine-s-government-unveils-5b-logistics-plan-for-road-rail-ports-23187.html\">unveiled<\/a> a $5 billion plan to improve road, rail and border checkpoints for the country\u2019s agricultural exports. The country has appealed for private financing for the scheme. Meanwhile, Romania has <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/romania-reopens-soviet-era-rail-075341939.html\">reopened<\/a> a Soviet-era rail line, and the Polish port of Gdansk is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/video\/watch\/polish-port-expects-to-up-ukrainian-grai-id749362028?chan=8gwsyvzx\">upping<\/a> its throughput of Ukrainian grain.<\/p>\n<p>Japan has donated $17 million to the UN FAO to help Ukraine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/uns-fao-receives-17-mln-ukraine-grain-storage-2022-07-05\/\">store<\/a> crops in plastic sleeves and modular storage containers. Ukraine still has 18 mln mt of last year\u2019s harvest in storage, and the country is expecting to harvest another 60 mln mt in the current season. Around 30 per cent of its granaries are full as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agricensus.com\/Article\/Ukraine-s-harvest-picks-up-pace-with-1m-mt-of-grain-threshed-23205.html\">harvest picks up pace<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Russia is trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-07-03\/putin-s-media-blitz-on-africa-food-crisis-sparks-alarm-in-europe\">convince<\/a> Africa that the war is not responsible for the continent\u2019s food shortages.<\/p>\n<p>UK farmers may have <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/food-costs-soaring-as-farms-are-crushed-by-visa-shortfall-12645764\">no choice<\/a> but to leave crops unpicked this harvest due to a shortage of foreign workers. The situation could lead to \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/695d9cfb-ce13-4328-984c-48d277e9376b\">catastrophic<\/a> food waste\u2019. UK food exports to the EU have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2022\/jul\/06\/uk-food-exports-to-eu-fell-19-in-15-months-after-brexit-show-figures\">fallen<\/a> significantly since Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>The WWF has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grocerygazette.co.uk\/2022\/07\/04\/wwf-transformation-food-system\/\">called<\/a> for a transformation of the UK\u2019s food system, arguing that farmers use 40 per cent of the country\u2019s arable land to grow wheat and barley to feed farm animals instead of people.<\/p>\n<p>Barry Callebaut has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.confectioneryproduction.com\/news\/40207\/barry-callebaut-suspends-chocolate-production-from-its-core-belgian-site-amid-salmonella-cases\/\">suspended<\/a> production at its manufacturing site at Wieze in Belgium after detecting salmonella. Ferrero recently faced a similar problem at Arlon in Belgium.<\/p>\n<p>On the environmental front, Dutch police have fired on farmers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/police-fire-dutch-farmer-protest-nitrogen-emission-cut\/\">protesting<\/a> nitrogen emission cuts that could require farmers to use less fertilizer and reduce their livestock numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Cargill is equipping some of their vessels with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/shipping-environment-cargill-idTRNIKBN2OC39D\">sails<\/a> to see if they can cut GHG emissions. Researchers have found that feeding cows <em>asparagopsis<\/em>, a seaweed native to Australia, <a href=\"https:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2022\/07\/07\/seaweed-diet-cuts-cow-methane-emissions-90-to-95-percent\/\">cuts<\/a> cows\u2019 methane emissions by 90-95 per cent.
