The storm could also severely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-09-27\/breakfast-inflation-may-worsen-as-orange-belt-braces-for-ian\">impact<\/a> Florida\u2019s citrus farmers, and orange juice futures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/orange-juice-prices-surge-ian-nears-florida-cargill-shuts-plants-2022-09-28\/\">traded higher<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s farmers have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agricensus.com\/Article\/Russian-wheat-crop-exceeds-100-million-mt-grain-crop-reaches-record-24744.html\">harvested<\/a> a record 100 mln mt of wheat even as export taxes and logistical issues have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-09-22\/russia-s-historic-100-million-ton-wheat-crop-piles-up-at-home\">slowed<\/a> export flows. Farm associations warn that Russia\u2019s partial mobilisation of reservists could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agricensus.com\/Article\/Russian-associations-challenge-Putin-as-farmers-eligible-for-military-call-up-24754.html\">disrupt<\/a> the final stages of the harvest and the planting stages of the next crop.<\/p>\n<p>Afghanistan\u2019s ruling Taliban has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-09-28\/taliban-sign-deal-with-russia-to-buy-cheap-oil-gas-and-wheat\">signed<\/a> an agreement with Russia to import two mln mt of wheat a year (until an unspecified date) at a \u2018special discount\u2019, payable in roubles.<\/p>\n<p>The CEO of Russia\u2019s VTB Bank, which owns stakes in major Russian grain export hubs, has asked President Putin to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/europe\/exclusive-vtb-urges-putin-curb-western-grain-traders-russian-ops-letter-2022-09-29\/\">prohibit<\/a> companies belonging to &#8220;persons related to unfriendly states&#8221; from buying grain and oilseeds from Russian farmers.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/ukraine-minister-black-sea-grain-deal-uncertain-because-putin-not-mentally-healthy\/\">expressed<\/a> doubts as to whether the Black Sea export corridor will be extended. Russia\u2019s mobilisation and war escalation could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/russia-ukraine-energy-food-oil-grain-inflation-51663864009\">increase<\/a> risks to world food supplies.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine&#8217;s wheat harvest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agricensus.com\/Article\/Ukraine-2022-23-production-estimated-at-67m-mt-exports-45m-mt-24610.html#:~:text=Ukraine%20is%20expected%20to%20produce,of%20agriculture%20showed%20on%20Monday.\">finished<\/a> at 19 mln mt, leaving it with at least 11 million mt for export. Next year, the country expects to produce 50-52 million mt of grains and 15-17 million mt of oilseeds. The head of the World Food Programme has urged donors to help <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-united-nations-general-assembly-health-covid-4cd84128be38ed5706a8478c8d5fa3f4\">tackle<\/a> the fertiliser supply crisis.<\/p>\n<p>EU vegetable farmers, particularly in northern Europe, are considering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/video\/watch\/idOV720722092022RP1\">halting<\/a> production due to rising energy costs. A separate study in Nature argues that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-022-02344-0\">declining crop yields<\/a> will limit the potential of biofuels.<\/p>\n<p>US farmers are urging the US government to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/us-farmers-urge-washington-challenge-mexicos-looming-ban-gm-corn-2022-09-26\/\">challenge<\/a> a looming Mexican ban on GM corn and glyphosate.<\/p>\n<p>The UK government is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/2533d2b8-54ff-4951-acf2-f3df2179af44\">rethinking<\/a> plans for England\u2019s post-Brexit farm subsidies. Environmentalists say the revised plans are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/sep\/24\/brexit-bonus-farmers-poised-to-scrap\">an attack on nature<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Food inflation and tight budgets may encourage consumers to eat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.convenience.org\/Media\/Daily\/2022\/Sep\/23\/1-Consumers-Trade-Meat-for-Veggies_Consumer\">less meat<\/a>, which some argue could <a href=\"https:\/\/sentientmedia.org\/could-veganism-end-world-hunger\/\">end<\/a> world hunger.\u00a0 Even so, McDonald&#8217;s has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/food\/2022\/sep\/24\/plant-based-meat-failed-impossible-burger-mcdonalds-beyond-meat\">pulled<\/a> their McPlant burger in the US after disappointing sales, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-09-26\/vegan-meat-sales-fall-with-high-prices-wokeness-turning-off-shoppers?\">retail<\/a> US plant-based meat sales are also falling. Shares in Beyond Meat are <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/09\/28\/investing\/plant-based-foods-beyond-meat\/index.html\">down<\/a> more than 75 per cent this year, and CNN asks whether the company is worth saving. Some question whether plant-based meat is <a href=\"https:\/\/thetakeout.com\/is-plant-based-meat-better-for-the-planet-eco-friendly-1849518030\">better<\/a> for the environment than real meat. Indonesia says it will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agricensus.com\/Article\/Indonesia-unlikely-to-lift-DMO-palm-oil-policy-may-raise-export-quota-instead-Gapki-24705.html#:~:text=Indonesia%20is%20unlikely%20to%20remove,Gapki)%20told%20Agricensus%20on%20Friday.\">maintain<\/a> the Domestic Market Obligation (DMO) policy that requires producers to supply the domestic market before they export.<\/p>\n<p>Confectionary News reports on the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.confectionerynews.com\/Article\/2022\/09\/22\/European-Cocoa-Forum-calls-for-crucial-balance-in-food-safety-sustainability-and-socio-economic-challenges\">European Cocoa Forum<\/a> amid fears that EU plans to make companies responsible for human rights abuses and environmental harm in their supply chain will put EU processors at a disadvantage to competitors in Asia and the US. Olam Food Ingredients has called for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-09-27\/olam-calls-for-global-rules-as-eu-plans-ethical-supply-chains\">level playing field<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In company news, Louis Dreyfus Company has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graincentral.com\/news\/agribusiness\/louis-dreyfus-asia-buys-emerald-grain\/\">bought<\/a> Australian grain trader and bulk handler Emerald Grain. Cargill has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsdakota.com\/2022\/09\/27\/cargill-opens-100-million-corn-wet-mill-in-indonesia\/\">opened<\/a> a new corn wet milling plant in Indonesia. ADM has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.world-grain.com\/articles\/17511-adm-debuts-science-and-technology-center-at-university\">inaugurated<\/a> a Science and Technology Centre at the University of Illinois. COFCO is the world\u2019s second-biggest, behind Cargill, with ADM the third. The NGO says that the commercial seed market is even more <a href=\"https:\/\/etcgroup.org\/content\/food-barons-2022\">concentrated,<\/a> with two companies controlling 40 per cent of the market, compared with ten companies 25 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, good news for all coffee lovers: a new study has found that coffee <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/09\/29\/health\/coffee-live-longer-wellness\/index.html\">lowers<\/a> the risk of heart problems and early death.
