However, Russia\u2019s UN ambassador said Moscow must first see movement on its own exports.<\/p>\n<p>Kyiv has accused Russia of <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/much-more-needed-relieve-backlog-095216793.html\">blocking<\/a> the full implementation of the current agreement, and the UN said that urgent steps are needed to relieve a backlog of more than 150 ships. Vessels now <a href=\"https:\/\/en.usm.media\/delays-in-the-sea-of-marmara-increased-for-14-days\/\">wait 14 days<\/a> for inspection. \u00a0A total of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apk-inform.com\/en\/news\/1529989\">397 vessels<\/a> have exported nine million mt of Ukrainian grains and oilseeds since the corridor opened in August.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine has kept its forecast for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/ukraine-keeps-2023-winter-wheat-sowing-area-forecast-unchanged-despite-delays\">winter wheat sowing<\/a> at 3.8 million ha, down from 6 million ha for the 2022 harvest (of which farmers harvested only 4.6 million hectares). Bloomberg has an interesting piece on the Ukrainian situation with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-10-25\/one-missile-shook-ukraine-s-grain-trade-another-might-kill-it\">interview<\/a> with the son of the late founder of Nibulon.<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/pakistan-seeks-lower-prices-in-talks-for-500000-tonne-wheat-tender-traders\">tender<\/a> for 500,000 mt of wheat kept traders busy this week. Russia\u2019s state trading company <a href=\"https:\/\/prodintorg.org\/en\/about\">Prodintorg<\/a> (remember them) raised the idea of a government-to-government deal to <a href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/2383568\/russian-delegation-discusses-wheat-export-to-pakistan\">exchange<\/a> wheat for rice and potatoes.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, India is considering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestatesman.com\/india\/india-looking-to-process-and-resell-russian-wheat-to-boost-its-own-exports-1503125660.html\">importing<\/a> Russian wheat to process and reexport it as flour and pasta.<\/p>\n<p>Drought could reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/argentine-wheat-harvest-forecast-slashed-again-amid-drought\">Argentina\u2019s<\/a> 2022\/23 wheat harvest to 13.7 million mt, down from a previous forecast of 15 million mt. The harvest could be the worst in seven years and well below the record 23 million mt last year.<\/p>\n<p>Severe flooding is likely to reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/rural\/2022-10-24\/crop-flood-damage-estimates-north-west-nsw\/101569484\">Australia\u2019s<\/a> wheat production. A farmer told ABC, \u201cYou spend all this money preparing your paddocks, sowing your crops, fertilising, and spraying them, only to see them wiped out a couple of weeks before harvest. It&#8217;s heartbreaking.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Brazil\u2019s soybean farmers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-10-26\/brazil-soybean-farmers-halt-advance-sales-to-bet-on-la-nina-profit-boost\">holding back new crop sales<\/a> in the expectation that La Nina may cause drought losses. China is suffering a nearby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-10-27\/china-s-shortage-of-pig-feed-set-to-ease-on-looming-soy-imports\">shortage<\/a> of soybean meal, leaving farmers short of animal feed. China\u2019s soybean crush volume <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agricensus.com\/Article\/China-s-soybean-crush-volumes-miss-expectations-stocks-drop-further-25301.html\">declined<\/a> last week, as did soybean stocks.<\/p>\n<p>French farmers have said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/world\/french-farmers-warn-of-food-supply-collapse-due-to-energy-crisis\/2720440\">high energy costs<\/a> could lead to bottlenecks in the food supply chain. Swiss dairy farmers face an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rts.ch\/info\/regions\/jura\/13489418-une-penurie-de-fourrage-frappe-les-exploitations-agricoles.html\">acute forage shortage<\/a> after the dry summer. Fodder prices have increased 40 per cent since last year.<\/p>\n<p>The EU has forecast its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/eu-cuts-maize-crop-forecast-raises-import-outlook\">drought-hit maise (corn) harvest<\/a> at a 15-year low of 54.9 million mt, down from an earlier forecast of 55.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico will push ahead with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/exclusive-mexico-proceed-with-gmo-corn-ban-seeks-international-grain-deals-2022-10-27\/\">2024 ban on GM corn<\/a>. The government said the ban could halve US corn imports and expect domestic production to make up the shortfall.<\/p>\n<p>India has approved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/india-gives-environmental-clearance-genetically-modified-mustard-2022-10-26\/\">GM rapeseed<\/a>, paving the way for the commercial use of its first GM food crop.<\/p>\n<p>Climate change could make coffee cultivation in India <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/business\/Industry\/a-crisis-is-brewing-in-the-indian-coffee-industry\/article66040410.ece\">uneconomic<\/a>. The sector is already struggling with high costs and a labour shortage.<\/p>\n<p>Bolivia has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/us\/bolivia-temporarily-suspend-exports-food-products-amid-protests-2022-10-27\/\">suspended<\/a> exports of food products, including soybeans, grains, sugar, oil, and beef, to safeguard domestic food security.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Ian caused as much as $1.8 billion in damages to <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/wireStory\/ians-damage-florida-agriculture-high-18-billion-92056155\">Florida agriculture<\/a> last month, with the most significant losses coming from citrus.<\/p>\n<p>The European spot price for gas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energyflux.news\/p\/eu-gas-goes-negative\">briefly turned negative<\/a> last week following a steep drop in consumption. The FT <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8c4f9b6f-7770-490e-83e8-3fdd12f7a99f\">cites<\/a> EU fertiliser production as one of the low-value-added businesses that ceased operating. Meanwhile, Brazil has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/brazil-re-exports-second-fertilizer-cargo-amid-storage-shortage\">reexported<\/a> its second fertiliser cargo due to a lack of domestic storage capacity.<\/p>\n<p>ADM reported a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/adm-results\/update-2-adm-profit-doubles-on-strong-global-grain-demand-tight-supplies-idUSL4N31Q2O1\">96 per cent increase<\/a> in its third-quarter profit, bolstered by high demand and tight global grain supplies. Bunge posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/bunge-third-quarter-profit-plunges-2022-10-26\/\">better-than-expected<\/a> results for the quarter and raised its full-year earnings outlook. Analysts expect both companies to <a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4549859-bunge-archer-daniels-midland-play-trends\">gain<\/a> from the rise in US renewable diesel.<\/p>\n<p>In what could have a significant impact on the European biofuel sector, the EU has agreed on a zero-emissions sales mandate for new cars and vans by 2035, effectively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/how-the-eu-ditched-the-combustion-engine-zero-emissions-green-deal\/\">banning<\/a> the sale of new internal combustion engine cars from that date.<\/p>\n<p>The Global Alliance for the Future of Food published a <a href=\"https:\/\/futureoffood.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/climatefinancereport-english.pdf\">report<\/a> showing that global governments <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2022\/10\/26\/field-report-cop27-sustainable-agriculture-climate-change-agroecology\/\">direct<\/a> only three per cent of their climate dollars toward food and agriculture systems.<\/p>\n<p>An Uyghur organisation and a human rights group are <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/european-union-europe-china-london-united-states-590f0edd2a7763da1c7d1680f5cec75c\">taking<\/a> the UK government to court to challenge Britain\u2019s failure to block the import of cotton products from China\u2019s Xinjiang region.<\/p>\n<p>Shipping companies are trying out technologies that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2343928-shipping-firms-are-blowing-bubbles-under-their-ships-to-reduce-drag\/\">blow bubbles<\/a> underneath a ship&#8217;s hull to save fuel and reduce emissions.<\/p>\n<p>Mondelez has said it would commit an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/878d51e8-120c-43ae-bf93-1ec34fdb0c70\">additional $600 million<\/a> in sustainability funding for cocoa until 2030, on top of $400mn invested over the past decade.<\/p>\n<p>Callebaut has launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/barry-callebaut-raises-bar-bid-redefine-chocolate-making-2022-10-27\/\">second-generation<\/a> chocolate with around 50 per cent less sugar and 60-80 per cent more cocoa than traditional chocolate.
