Since July, Ukraine has shipped 11.1 million mt of agricultural commodities under the deal, including 4.5 million mt of corn and 3.2 million mt of wheat.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately,\u00a0 more must be done to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8ebef6a9-f0f6-4956-8cf9-9f5c526c3075\">evacuate<\/a> the hundreds of seafarers stuck on vessels in Ukrainian ports.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian farmers had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agriculture.com\/markets\/newswire\/ukraines-2022-grain-crop-81-complete-at-391-mln-t-ministry-says\">harvested<\/a> 39.1 million mt of grain from 81 per cent of the expected area as of 17<sup>th<\/sup> November. Farmers had completed the 2022 wheat and barley harvests, producing 19.4 million and 5.6 million mt, respectively, down from 32.2 million mt of wheat and 9.4 million mt of barley harvested in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The FAO Food Price Index <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/worldfoodsituation\/foodpricesindex\/en\/\">fell<\/a> for the seventh month in a row in October, averaging 135.9 points. The index has fallen 14.9 per cent from its peak in March this year but remains two per cent above a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>The FAO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-11-11\/record-global-food-import-bill-near-2-trillion-hurting-poorest\">warns<\/a> that the world\u2019s food import bill could climb to a record $1.94 trillion in 2022, $128.6 billion more than predicted in June.<\/p>\n<p>UK food price <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/1fcc250c-c1c5-4820-a5f4-4e48662a73aa\">inflation<\/a> hit an annual rate of 16.5 per cent in October, the highest for 45 years. The increase could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/59599b3c-c5e4-4da6-8988-4de089109bcc\">add<\/a> \u00a3682 to the average British household\u2019s yearly shopping bill. Annual food price inflation was 10.9 per cent in October in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/1d93c771-ee91-40a6-a878-be120d59f43c\">US<\/a> \u00a0and 13.1 per cent in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d783e38e-7a58-4285-b68a-55e357bb8c4b\">EU<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cargill\u2019s CEO is optimistic that food prices will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-11-16\/food-prices-will-likely-be-lower-next-year-cargill-ceo-says\">decline<\/a> next year, although he warns, \u201cAll it takes is one really bad crop, let\u2019s say in North America or South America, to really send prices higher.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scientists in Israel are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/cop\/cop27-israel-harnessing-dna-bygone-wild-crops-enhance-food-supply-2022-11-10\">creating<\/a> a gene bank from the seeds of local wild crops that may help farmers deal with a harsher climate. The seeds come from the Fertile Crescent region, the birthplace of crop cultivation.<\/p>\n<p>The FT believes the mood is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/337ba132-cc33-42a9-9df3-cd53114200bc\">shifting<\/a> on public acceptance of gene-edited crops compared to gene-modified ones. Not everyone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20221113-gmo-skeptics-still-distrust-big-agriculture-s-climate-pitch\">agrees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kenya will soon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agriculture.com\/markets\/newswire\/kenya-to-import-first-genetically-modified-maize-as-drought-ravages-food-supply\">import<\/a> GM corn for the first time, but the decision remains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-africa-63487149\">controversial<\/a>. Meanwhile, India\u2019s farmers have taken the country\u2019s decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/supreme-court-takes-up-plea-against-gm-mustard-its-release-on-hold-8248253\/\">allow<\/a> gene-edited rapeseed to the supreme court.<\/p>\n<p>Low water levels in the Mississippi River continue to present shipping problems. PBS has an excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xI9VsPaGk-M\">video<\/a> on the subject, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/mississippi-river-drying-1759697\">Newsweek<\/a> also looks at the situation. A threatened rail strike could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/mississippi-river-drying-1759697\">aggravate<\/a> delays.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/13\/us\/politics\/farmland-values-prices.html\">New York Times<\/a> has a long read on the record-high price of US farmland and how it impacts local communities. Land prices may, however, have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agweb.com\/news\/business\/taxes-and-finance\/rural-bankers-share-predictions-farmland-values-recession-and\">plateaued<\/a>. Meanwhile, farmers <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/bill-gates-called-farmer-secretly-204117426.html\">criticise<\/a> Bill Gates over his extensive land purchases.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/fertilizer-rescue-plan-no-relief-europe-farmer-industry\/\">published<\/a> a plan to ensure the availability and affordability of fertilisers. \u00a0Few think it will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agroportal.pt\/european-commission-ensuring-availability-and-affordability-of-fertilisers\">work<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The UK government is again <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/9d0fb5c3-3e6b-4b78-a3d8-93723ac59f5b\">tinkering<\/a> with the country\u2019s \u00a33 billion agriculture support payments post-Brexit. Meanwhile, some UK supermarkets are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.just-food.com\/news\/uk-supermarkets-limit-egg-purchases-amid-avian-influenza-pressure\/\">limiting<\/a> egg purchases per customer in the face of avian flu.<\/p>\n<p>The COP27 climate summit has been in the headlines. The world\u2019s major agricultural commodity suppliers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tropicalforestalliance.org\/assets\/Agriculture-Sector-Roadmap-November-2022.pdf\">presented<\/a> a strategy to reduce agricultural emissions and end deforestation as part of a pathway to keep global warming below 1.5\u00b0C. The Guardian was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/nov\/12\/food-firms-plans-15c-climate-target-fall-short-campaigners-aoe\">unimpressed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Egypt presented an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edie.net\/egypt-launches-new-initiative-for-nations-to-collaborate-on-sustainable-food-systems-transformation\/\">initiative<\/a> called \u2018Food and Agriculture for Sustainable Transformation\u2019 (FAST). With the FAO as a facilitator, it aims to unite nations under a vision to \u201ctransform\u201d agriculture and food systems this decade, aligning them with a 1.5C temperature.<\/p>\n<p>The UN published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/cc0923en\/cc0923en.pdf\">report<\/a> on how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/report\/sustainable-food-cold-chains-opportunities-challenges-and-way-forward\">cold food chains<\/a> can reduce food waste. The UN estimates 14 per cent of the total food produced for human consumption is lost, while 17 per cent is wasted, enough to feed around one billion people. (The world is making <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/cop\/world-making-little-progress-food-waste-big-climate-problem-2022-11-15\/\">little progress<\/a> on reducing food waste. The average American wastes more than 700 calories of food per day \u2013 about a third of recommended daily intake.)<\/p>\n<p>Reuters reports that farmers across the globe are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/cop\/dying-lands-farmers-fight-save-skin-earth-2022-11-12\/\">losing the battle<\/a> to preserve their soil in the face of climate change. The situation is particularly dire in East Africa. Forbes argues that farmers must do more to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/nutrien\/2022\/11\/17\/to-feed-the-growing-planet-agriculture-needs-to-embrace-sustainability-and-productivity\">embrace<\/a> sustainability to feed the eight billion people living on our planet (up more than five billion in my lifetime).<\/p>\n<p>A Dutch vertical farm has <a href=\"https:\/\/agfundernews.com\/infarms-indoor-wheat-suggests-we-re-examine-the-realities-of-vertically-farmed-commodities\">successfully<\/a> grown wheat on an indoor farm without soil. It says that at scale, vertical farming could yield the equivalent of 117 mt\/ha per year or 26 times that of open-field farming yields. However, some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodnavigator.com\/Article\/2022\/11\/09\/Sustainability-of-vertical-farming-scrutinised-amid-rising-energy-prices-Surging-costs-could-be-the-final-nail-in-the-coffin-for-many-vertical-farms\">question<\/a> whether vertical farms are environmentally friendly.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian quotes a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rebootfood.org\/\">report<\/a> arguing that we could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/nov\/12\/replace-animal-farms-micro-organism-rewilding-food-precision-fermentation-emissions\">rewild<\/a> 75 per cent of agricultural land if we replaced livestock farming with fermentation.<\/p>\n<p>In a first for the US, the FDA has <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/11\/17\/health\/fda-lab-meat-cells-scn-wellness\/index.html\">given<\/a> a safety clearance to a California-based company that makes meat from cultured chicken cells.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2022\/11\/12\/plant-based-meat-market\/\">Washington Post<\/a> examines the reasons for the drop in plant-based meats and dairy demand. Nestl\u00e9 remains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-11-14\/nestle-remains-bullish-on-plant-protein-despite-dip-in-demand\">bullish<\/a> on plant-based meat, believing that future growth will come from flexitarians rather than vegetarians or vegans. Cargill has a roughly similar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nutritionaloutlook.com\/view\/cargill-releases-new-research-on-consumer-perception-of-plant-based-dairy-supplyside-west-2022-report\">outlook<\/a> for the plant-based dairy sector.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, a message to dog owners: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2347569-wet-pet-food-has-seven-times-the-carbon-emissions-of-dry-food\/\">feed your pet dry<\/a>, rather than wet, food. Wet food creates 690 per cent more greenhouse gas emissions than dry food. Regarding food consumption, a ten-kilogram dog eating wet food has an annual carbon \u201cpawprint\u201d roughly equal to the human footprint.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the above links require subscriptions.
